Daybreak isn't going anywhere, the games they do have active are very much still thriving (EQ/EQ2 progression servers are loaded with people of all levels even.). All of the games are getting frequent updates -- still -- and even a huge list of expansions for each one that's releasing this year alone.
EQ1/EQ2 could indeed be "doing great" but there is a difference between "breaking even / making an operating profit" and bringing in mega-bucks to fund a new game. Proof? Sony wrote off $60M development costs - in their financial report to investors - and then sold SoE.

I suspect that the sale to CN was - potentially - good for the likes of EQ1 / EQ2. My thinking being that each title now has to stand or fall on there own merits. So if EQ1 say generate revenues then some of that that revenue is more likely to be re-invested in EQ1 rather than simply going to support EQN. Of course if they stop generating enough revenue they will be closed.

Whilst good for the old games this is "less good" for EQN. Doesn't mean EQN isn't been worked on simply that it has been given a budget and that is that. It can no longer rely on "siphoning" off money from the other games. And remember Sony wrote off $60M - doubt CN will do that.

With an IP such as Everquest, both previous games still running and played, it baffles me that they have not released EQN. Why sit on a lucrative Franchise?
There is a big difference between sitting on a franchise and not having anything ready to release yet. Releasing garbage can kill a franchise very easily...

Even if it does release I don't think it'll ever be EQ to me.  I'll buy it, don't get me wrong, but it won't be what I'm looking for in a game on Norrath!  I really hope they prove me wrong though!  Wouldn't it be great to play a modern MMO on Norrath with all that lore?  I bet 2018 at the earliest for EQN if ever.
Thats the thing...It feels like EQN will be the jumping the shark episode...It sounded like it was EQ in name only from what I understood.

Everquest Next is technically a reboot, how can it jump the shark exactly?

They also published numerous ebooks novellas for the new settings, some people might want to read about the new lore, if that is their thing.

The first rule of EQ Next Club, is Daybreak never talks about EQ Next.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Not speaking for Theorctius, but I understand the comment about EQN jumping the shark and being EQ in name only.  EQN is trying to be so many things taken from so many popular games that the end result doesn't look or feel like a game based on EQ.

Everquest Next: Landmark was the soft release for EQN.  Did any of that game feel like it was a game based on Everquest or was it like watching Fonzy waterski jump over live sharks?

The silence still means one of two things. Good news or bad. Since the game was being developed we are in the same place. Waiting for the devs to tell us whats next. Posters like Daff tell people what is but they have no clue. None of us do, till the devs tell us. At best this is a fun guessing game. As always, I will wait for official word. Was 2015 the year of EQN? We should find out soon I hope. lol Myself I cant help but wonder if they have failed at their attempts at a new AI. That without the main coder from Storybrick, they didnt have the talent to finish the work. Or maybe the head coder quite SB because he realized he didnt have the talent as well to finish it lol.

I learned a few days ago from reading posts from a Daybreak employee* on another forums, that Storybrick guys were dropped because they failed to deliver anything functional (he calls it a lot of smoke and mirror). They were just trying to sell the company to SOE.

*well now ex-employee (he left in October to fly planes), but some of his posts are pre-October.

The guy is also of the opinion that Daybreak will close doors before cancelling EQNext and that Russ Shanks (the guy who replaced Smedley) is a EQ guy.

It is possible that the silence could be good or bad, but I doubt anyone can name an example where a game this far in development has gone silent and the results were anything but bad.

Nan, its funny how often you say people have no clue despite how often you made claims about the games path citing how this developer communicates more than any other developer or worked more closely with their community than other developers.  Then when things look bad you want to act like with live in some sort of information void and know absolutely nothing about anything.

I don't think you are being fair in the way you flip flop going from "We know so much about the game and the develpers" to "We don't know anything at all, not a single clue, so no one has even the slighest idea of anything".

At this point I think everyone except you is just waiting for the developer to offically state what they already see coming.

People have no official word or irrefutable proof. But people have a clue. We've been through this before. Come on now. Most can see the writing on the wall. Is it 100%? No, DB can still surprise us. But will they? Do you really expect to be pleasantly surprised? I'm sorry, but I consider myself to at least "have a clue" That's why it's called a "clue" and not "proof". In fact, I believe we have 2 clues.

    1. is Landmark.
    2. is H1Z1

Landmark was supposed to be the test bed for EQN and look where that is now.
H1Z1 is DB's current cash cow and we see plenty of activity there. But EQN?

I have never said, I think the game is this or that. I have always said the devs say and till the devs say something different, your guess means little to me. Sorry Daff. As far as a MMO still in Alpha stages we know more then most games that this point in development. Normally alpha means you know nothing. You cant try out the combat etc like we have in EQN. Or get an idea how the game will drive. We do because of Landmark. As for the fine point of the game, we still know nothing. If you dont get the whole picture thats not my fault daff. So yes, again, your guess mean little as so would mine. We know nothing till the devs tell us or someone leaks something. So stop putting words in my mouth.

    And...........

on that note, when the devs are telling you "nothing" it pretty much means there is nothing worth mentioning.

I wonder if anyone  is even playing Landmark anymore to help them build the assets.I would not be the least surprised that the game will be 90% player made assets. So all they do is have 1 person dot the assets around,a few more people will work on the questing and tying in the triggers.Actual mapping, well a generated world with automated trees and grass takes 1 person.
In reality they could pull off what Chris Roberts has been doing, take what is like 1-3 people worth of work, generate some world map,dot in a few assets and pretend you have some game, however they have not even got to that point which is very discouraging.

Ya know I still play Landmark. Maps are filled with peoples buildings and I still hang out with the same builders. That game has been just what it said it would be. A building game for the hardcore builder. A place to test EQNs mechanics. H1Z1 is still a big seller on Steam. I hate that type of game myself as I dont like horror but it still gets allot of streamers on twitch.

As for reading the signs. Ya we make guesses and like you said your guess. I have made my guess but Daft there says them as fact. My guess is they are having problems with the AI system and things may not be coming out as planed. New directions are not always bad but who knows. I hold hope as I do for most MMOs. Even games made my EA that I hate so much. Bugs me I am subbing to one of their games now.

Where it bothers me with Daff there is this. We begs for something different. We begs for MMOs not to be cookie cutter and DGC has stuck their necks out trying to make something different and we gamers look for every reason to bash them for it. Even if they fail, IMO they should be cheered for trying. I know the odds are not on their side. Was not from the moment they went down the path of a RD game. I will always cheer for devs who go in new directions.

Yes, but you can't say they answered the call. (so to speak) Yes, people wanted something different. But different and good or different and bad? Just because it's different doesn't mean it's going to deliver. Conversely, "More of the same" is also good and bad. FFXIV:ARR was more of the same......so was Wildstar. "More of the same" and good or "More of the same" and bad?

I see many times for so many games, people using the argument "You asked for XYZ They gave you XYZ what do people want. But they "XYZ" they gave sucks.

    LOL,
You said, they tried to do something different. But different isn't enough. It still has to be good. And with EQ I think they really wanted a new game to redefine the genre again. Instead, it was looking like it was going to be JAFMMORPG to add to the pile.

The question is. What do they do now with what they have? And exactly what is it they have?
My gut tells me what they really have isn't what they thought they had.

I don't think that there's anything wrong with what he said. It isn't inaccurate, is it? It went from very open to devoid of any sort of community communication. That being said, this is an exceptional case. We're not talking about a game, by the same company, that went dark. We're talking about a game that was in development, the company was sold, and then it went dark. Asking someone to name a similar game isn't fair in and of itself because the paradigm is rare, if not unprecedented.

What we do know is they haven't said it's cancelled. I think they've gone as far as to mention it's NOT cancelled. Is that accurate? It isn't as though the studio is being more open with any of their games. They are essentially a black box right now. So the communication style is definitely different. Maybe it's just a matter of them doing a reset on how they are communicating. Maybe they feel that more transparency or more community involvement, or community involvement to the level of EQN doesn't work. There would be evidence supporting that based on some of the other games taking this same, more transparent, path of community communication and involvement. Generally speaking, people DON'T seem to appreciate it, it only gives people additional ammunition to lob dog doodie at the studio, and it creates additional stress on staff. So maybe darkness is the plan. It wouldn't be a bad idea, in my opinion.

But EQN?

Pepperoni pizza from one place is good, So all Pepperoni pizza from anyone has to be?
I wouldnt even know how to respond to this post. Are you saying people dont know if they want good or bad games? That FF and Wildstar are cookie cutter MMOs?
    LOL,
You said, they tried to do something different.

Who shoots for different bad lol??? If what they were shooting for came about. It would have remade MMOs in a new and great way. I have no clue if they even came close but my guess with whats invested, they will release something. Be it cookie cutter or 1/2 what they were shooting for with 1/2 being something copy and pasted from the MMO market. Like I said, I wait to see what happens. I dont care if they have gone back in the black box. IMO I think its for the best.
