The duchess gives an interesting quest that you dont experience often in games.

I love the story you told. All the adventures feel like that, even the simple escort quests. The cut-scenes are interesting and most aren't too long. The adventures feel the most like a pnp game I've played in a crpg.

The other neat thing about the game is that it feels like a hybrid of an open world game like Skyrim and an on rails narrative rpg. There are places you need to go to unlock story bits and pieces of the game, but you can also just go anywhere else that's open and try your hand if you're tough enough.

Thanks! And I agree, it does feel a bit like some pen and paper games.

There's just enough story to get you to a place but it doesn't really force it down your throat.

I recall another time when I was on a quest and decided to see what was "beyond". Ended up fighting one of those Lion, Goat, Snake things but as we were fighting (and this is the bit I love) some harpies started attacking us.

Here my party is trying to take down this thing and we suddenly get attacked from the air. Suddenly I am magically blinded (and at the time didn't know about the eye droppers) so all I see is a smoky haze, I hear the harpies' song and I hear roaring and stomping around as I see the health bars of my party being thrown all over the place.

I was actually able to finish that fight but all my party was at most half health. I then realized it was dark, which as you know is exceptionally "dark".

So, I started the trek back do Gran Soren but on the way, ran into these very formidable armor wearing skeletons that happened to "appear". Suddenly the "purple magic" started happening and I realized that there was no way I could take these guys down as I barely nicked their health. We then started our run with the skeletons after us.

In the distance I saw a small river and thought that "if I could only cross it I should be ok".

We hit the river and this sort of "predator" like camouflage rose from the waters. They were these lizard things.

And that's when we went down!

I later learned that traveling at night is risky as the monsters are more dangerous.

When it comes to the lizards (Saurians), cut their tail off and they become weakened, they are also weak to ice.

The Chimera which is the lion/goat/snake thing, cut the snake off first then the goat.

Skeletons are really weak to blunt attacks like blunt weapons and shield attacks or skills/spells with similar effect.  And they are weak to holy.

I have to say, I've been having the best time in this game.

Some highlights were fighting a Troll. on a cliff side only to have both troll and myself go over the edge. Both of us died. Was very cinematic.

Last night I decided to go back to the starter town and finish a quest (to capture a thief which actually was pretty fun)  when I took a quest to escort an npc to an area of the map I had never been to before

On my way I kept trying to find alternate routes as I knew if I was to engage any large monsters (I actually had seen the weird Lion, Goat, Snake thing on a path ahead) I knew the npc would be killed.

Just when I was close to my destination, a dragon spotted me (I really thought I had avoided it) and what transpired was a mad dash through goblins, going back for my healer, and avoiding the dragon that kept following me.

I really felt like I was in one of those movies where "your band" had to make it home through enemy territory and you knew it was going to be hopeless.

In any case, my pawn's name is Odette and is a healer with some fire damange, fire attunement (can light your weapons on fire) as well as being able to give you holy damage.

I just swapped out one of her skills and added some sort of buff/shield that will protect you from magic. Going to venture out in the night time to an area where previously these skeleon "things" rose out of purple light and were impossible to kill (more running. I think I find running for my life very fun in these games),

Interestingly, when I went back to the starter town I "heard" someone call from inside the well (I had previously helped a guard next to the well in a quest involving going down in the well) and another quest triggered down there.

Sounds like a lot of fun!

Is this the same dragons dogma that was released age ago? I loved the game but not sure if I want to replay it after 3-4 years?
Yes, it was recently released for PC along with some expansion content. Granted it's an older game  but to me it's a bit of fresh air.

It runs exceptionally smooth and is a decent port. The textures aren't awesome but I can forgive them.

Ooh yeah the games itself is brilliant, I loved it. I might pick up again to replay but I have toooo many games I want to play to last me the whole of 2016 and that's exluding a lot of the awesome games in 2016.

I just got out of the basement under Gran Soren. That was an interesting trip. I've had quests end like that before in other RPGs, but they've always been scripted. I was having a horrible time because I wasn't listening to my Pawn chatter in combat. Sometimes their quips make a big difference.

After that I grabbed all the quests from the quest board at the inn, one of which is an escort quest. I started that one first. It was to escort this warrior to Witchwood or someplace in the south west. I over aggroed some bandits and failed the quest. I'm not sure what's going to happen or not happen because of that I haven't got back to town yet because I got curious about the Witchwood forest and went to check it out. A long while later I found my way out. There is so much to explore.

I've switched from strider to mystic archer and am a lot happier. I enjoyed the dagger skills, but the strider bow skills didn't click with me. They felt weak and I burned through special arrows like butter. I'm using a staff/bow and love it. I carry a pair of daggers in case that becomes useful.

I've changed my Pawn from warrior to sorcerer and like it well enough. I need to flesh out her skills a little more. I don't like Frazil much. It seems very situational and hard to get to work right. When it works it's handy, but often it doesn't.

Unfortunately, at this point the "Queens" garb is the best for min/max, but affects the appearance rating and whether people hire her. She was getting 3 to 4 hires a day as a warrior, but only 1 or 2 as a Sorc in the queens garb. That's cutting into my RC. I'm thinking of going back to worse gear but better appearance.

    Off to do more quests.
Save the game often when you do escort quest, at least right before you encounter some enemies.

You'll want those daggers when you run into golems, magic immune bastards that they are. There are a few dagger skills for the magick archer that are non magical -- cutting wind and hundred kisses being the better ones of those. Just don't forget that even in the middle of a fight you can go into the pause menu > equipment, and swap out the staff for daggers.

But yeah, I prefer staff and magic bow most of the time too.

Here's a page with all the magic archer skills and the type of damage they do (similar pages there for all the classes)
