Black Ops 3... what exactly keeps this game alive?

I got talked into buying it for the ps4, got finished with the odd ball campaign and finally dove into multiplayer.  I don't think I've ever seen such a fall from grace with multiplayer in my life.  The entire system of rewards seems to be completely backwards, with killstreaks benefiting players who don't need them, strange class weapons that kill way too fast, and wall running making it nearly impossible to set up a decent kill zone, which is the only way to survive longer than 10 seconds in the game.  I'd understand if players were more durable, since then there would be time to actually react and fight.  But this is just a random pot luck of hoping you don't respawn into some area with enemies nearby and hoping you run  into  people in such a way that they don't see you.

What do  all these other people see in this game that keeps them playing?

I'm glad I read this. I was very close to buying the game even though I've been disappointed with it's predecessors. I know a lot of people still like it but I'm pretty sure I would have wasted my money. I'm having a blast playing the new SW:B though...

Well yeah but in Counterstrike your feet are on the ground and you live at least long enough to learn from what happened, which is how Modern Warfare 1 and 2 worked.  Here it's like complete chaos since people can run jump off of walls or get insta-kill weapons from a specialist class.  Not to mention the kill streaks die too fast and take a miracle to even get to unless someone is already ahead enough on the killing floor that it's just giving unneeded aid.

Also IRL guns don't kill instantly unless the guy goes into shock or gets hit in a vital spot.  So not sure where that comes from.

I have.  Twice.  Not sure what point you're getting at.

That ones major crime is coming out incomplete.  I'm holding off on it until they get a GOTY edition or something that has all the stuff that was missing from it like space battles and the like.  The other thing I'm waiting for is a rebalancing of weapons because having a blaster  that is as strong as an anti-tank laser rifle is just silly, especially when everyone gets said pistol from the special edition.

Yesterday I was playing and a teammate got shot by someone with the tempest specialist that shoots arcing electricity or whatever. It killed him in one shot then jumped to another nearby teammate and one shot him as well. I came running by like a full 2-3 seconds later and it jumped from him and killed me too. Most ridiculously dumb triple kill I've ever seen in my life. That was the last straw for me.

It's a waste of money, don't buy it since 1&2 are better.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

The part I hate is when you try playing that robot escort game mode and your spawn is in line of sight of the goal.  You basically instantly spawn in and then get shot by people as they move towards the goal, giving them fuel for kill streaks and other crazy stuff for free that they can use on the start of the next round.  Really the entire multiplayer game is broken, but the glowing reviews all want to hide it behind their 8/10 and 9/10 scores.  This game isn't horrid, but it's definitely a 5 or 6 out of 10.  Average at best and being shilled at a msrp of 60 usd.  I felt I got a better deal with Vermintide at 25 usd, and that game is all one game mode.

Quick skinny on BO3 multiplayer in case anyone is interested...

Basically if you play on console, your weapon selection for multiplayer is going to be limited to Assault Rifles, Sub-machine guns, and Shotguns.  It's not because they don't give you the other weapons, but because the way they have modified movement and scaled the maps snipers are at best really bad battle rifles with crap handling, and machine guns are too sluggish  to be used effectively compared to ARs, subs, and shotties.

Also, match making leaves a bit to be desired.  Randomly jumping into games leads to really lopsided teams and you'll end up losing probably 70% of the time unless you are teaming up with friends.  So don't expect much going in as a solo player.

Modern Warfare 2 was the last time CoD multiplayer was fun.  I logged thousands of hours in MW1 and MW2 multiplayer.

But about 20 hours into Black Ops 1, I was done and I haven't played their multiplayer since.  By the time BO1 came around, the game became to gimmicky.  It relied way too much on the killstreaks and toys at that point and had moved away from the shooter elements.

Sure MW1 and MW2 had killstreaks, but the way that they were implemented meant that they weren't all that game changing, but a nice little bonus for playing well.  Anyone in their right mind knew to shoot down a helicopter if they heard one, or get into cover for an air strike.

Not only that, but map design kept getting worse and worse with each progressive title.  The maps in MW1 and MW2 and even WAW were well designed, realistic and tactical.  The maps since BO1 have been ridiculous, frantic affairs where the architecture makes little to no sense sometimes.  Crash, Overgrown, Showdown, Vacant, Backlot(!!), Highrise, Crossfire(!) and Terminal, oh man Terminal, were some extremely fun maps.

Yeah, I really don't like the direction they took with Black Ops at all.  It felt like the core is still there for a good game, but they have features that work against each other left and right and make the game a painful affair to play.  Heck, it feels like all three big shooters on consoles are suffering from various issues going from bad blood (destiny), underwhelming content (Battlefront), and conflicting game design features (Black Ops 3).  The games holding their own are the RPGs and sandbox titles like Fallout 4 and Just Cause 3, though both games suffer optimization issues.

I hate to say it this way and sound pretentious but Call Of Duty continues on because of "stupid masses". The generational gap can't even be blamed because they release games so often. It should have been dead quite a few iterations ago, but you know... Idiocracy. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a perk that allowed players to kick each other in the balls instead of knifing and there was an "Ow My Balls" map/mode at this point.
