They best way for me to avoid the grind is to allow me to play how I want. That's what I miss about older game is open ended gameplay and player story.
Make combat extremely fun, and many people will willingly "grind" dungeons endlessly. Sure, it is not for everyone but no game is for everyone.
LoL, Starcraft, World of Tanks ... follow the same philosophy. Those games are essentially nothing but ONE game mode (even D3 which has quite a few game modes, the core gameplay is the same) .. and they make that fun even when repeated again and again.
grinds work great only if its in three or more people sized groups, thats why I grind most of my levels in dungeons every game. Too bad we can only do dungeons to grind. Wish there was a way to grind on wildlife with three people with the chance of dungeon grade drops on random xp mobs while grinding in a three person xp party.
I remember going back to wow starting at level 1 and dungeons were the only xp place, no use of the game world, it made me cry in my heart that my game experience was restricted to only dungeons. we need grinds to be three persons or more in the open world, rewarding exploration while xp grinding, much like old eq camps or ffxi camps , ect.
I a grind using a skateboard. its fun. Bodybuilding is a grind. If repetitive tasks are a grind, almost all forms of training are a grind too. PvP on the same map much? then thats a grind. FPS the same map? Ddust2 is a grind.
If my only option for progression is standing in one spot killing the same mobs over and over as they respawn, then i have none and i consider it a grind.
Ironically i don't mind this scenario in a group where soloing is impossible though.

Is that what you really asking for? To play how you want? Are you sure you aren't asking them to develop the game the way you want?

For combat skills I would force it into a social aspect: 1) at start of game you're given a set of default skills based on how you said you wanted to play(sword+shield/bow/true tank/utility-mage). 2) you're then given a set of random skills and random modifiers 3) the only way to learn new skills is to learn them from players(no drops, no leveling, no nothing) 4) You have the ability to teach skills that you got at the start of the game OR skills where you learned the same thing from several players 5) even aspects like "bonus health" are a skills/skill modifiers that you start with or learn from other players.

Of course it is. Is there something wrong with that? If they only made cars in a color you didn't like, wouldn't you say that you'd like more color options, including the color you do like?

nothing .. but unless your preference is very niche, why ask? Just choose the game you like, and start playing.
I have more games in my steam library than I have time to play. Even if devs make more games i like, i can't promise i will have time to get to them.
