New type of Character Creation

FalendorFalendor Member UncommonPosts: 81
If you have read the DJs for CoE (and you really should before posting hear, they cover a lot) you'll notice when you create a character you don't just manifest from nothing in a starter town like other MMOs. No, you instead take on a character with a place in the world, parents, a hometown, even a profession. You wont have to spend the first few hours grinding goblins to get out of starter gear, you'll have family to provide you with what your need to contribute to the household.

How do you think this will effect gameplay? What part of early RPG play do you most look forward to skipping?

That is for those that are not wards.

It will on the whole improve immersion but also for gameplay reasons

Player nations! if you start in a family that resides and belongs to a nation you will be part of that, that cuts out a lot of trouble with recruiting.

Where not 100% certain Wards manifest from nothing. DJ5 did mention closed servers, maybe this is caused by not enough children? And if Wards come from nowhere there wouldnt be a limit.

I doubt we'll ever get to see this in action to be perfectly honest, but maybe time will tell.  I think this game is overly ambitious to a degree that it will end up as either 'vaporware' or another game that simply promises the world going out of the gate but once it's finally released a number of the planned features have been cut, etc. But sure if it releases with most features intact this would be pretty cool.  I'm not going to hold my breath though.

The reincarnation and child creation thing isn't really hard to implement, i mean its basically CKII the MMORPG when you really look at it.

I was referring to the part having a family and a place in the world. Wards have no family, no friends, no one loves them and they are sad.

You would be surprised how much they have done already, they are keeping there cards close and playing them one by one (dev journals).

If they prove me wrong that'd be great.  We'll have to wait and see though.  There have been far too many failures recently in the MMO industry.  Especially when it comes to these types of games who promise the world and then fall flat on their faces.

Part of the excitement though is being able to follow a game from its announcement and watch as the developers unfold their vision. Yes sometimes it may not match what we desired or longed for but it doesnt take away from the experience.

I like how the plans for families are also friendly for lonely players who don't come to the game as part of a clan or guild.

You can be what you want. a lone hunter, a mercenary, anything. You don't really need to be part of something bigger.

At game launch there will totally be need for characters willing to brave the wild to see what's out there, the world will be procedurally generated so even Beta players wont know.

Many of these explores will be solo characters, basically rangers and such.

I wonder if they are going to have some sort of sorcery class option
  • Deffcon_1Deffcon_1 Member UncommonPosts: 164
    @InfamousGOD
There are not classes in Chronicles of Elyria. As for sorcerers, only about 5% of the souls will have talents and only talented souls will have magic.

Well imo you should not magically start with a profession, you should have to work into one.Perhaps that could put those meaningless quests we are so used to and give them some meaning.Example perhaps you have to go fetch Joe Smuck some Bear pelts before he teaches you how to work with leathers.
Just magically starting with a profession would imo deter what the whole game is trying to do with creating some realism.

Maybe I'm wrong but as far I as remember you'd start at age 12 or something. If that's the case you won't be a craftsman obviously. I'm looking forward to be a brat!

You can indeed start as 12 as a Ward. It I 15 if you are joining a family. There is also the option of a non-traditional character NTC) who is over the age of 18. It seems that each option offers something a little bit different. Wards give the most customisation, children within a family give you slightly less customisation but a support structure, and those NTCs have no customisation at all but other benefits with early progression.

Personally I can not decide at all between choosing a Ward or a NTC. I keep going back and forth! Part of me likes the idea of coming in with a place in the world, already owning land etc. Another part thinks that means I will skip one of the most important parts of a game for me, developing my character. I think one of the interesting things for me is that question up in the first post:

I do not look forward to skipping anything. Those early parts of an RPG are nearly always the parts that I look back on the fondest. Perhaps that makes my decision for me.

that more then depends on how the story goes, the good ones tell you have a reason to be there, be it wanting to join the army, so you are given the basic equipment, or was stranded there for some reason and now you have to fight to leave that place, you don't need to push a family on you if you write a good story to be there, also older games didn't cared much for that because players would do that, and they did, but nowadays who play MMORPG are not RPG players are everything and most well, lets say have a cod mentality
FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

Oh yes Wards can get love in the future. It is just they do not start in a family, with the support that brings. I do not think the game gives Wards a background, because that goes against the idea of the Ward giving you a lot more customisation and player choice. That doesn't mean it doesn't give you a story going forward, but you do not start with a history or planned aim.

Yeah after thinking about it,my earliest moments in a rpg are the most defining as well.Likely why i can decide if a game is for me within minutes.
I don't like to skip anything either,i like all the tedious little things that lead into developing my character.

One of my biggest if not the biggest peeve for me is shallow minded gaming where i just spawn into a world,no reason why i am even there and just vee line right for the nearest yellow question mark.I like to feel there is some rpg there,at least start me in a house or town or something plausible, why am i spending 2 hours customizing my hair color/tattoos then immediately i am killing 10 rabbits for Jake the rabbit hunter.

So i pray to god this game doesn't have me vee lining for any yellow markers no matter i am 12,15 or Colonel Sanders selling fried chicken to Astral Domina.

Deffcon_1 - You really need to stop saying that about talents. It has been made fundamentally clear that Talents will be made available to those best able to carry out the task/storyline of the world. If you are playing a soul that is not "Born" with a talent, fret not. You can still obtain one if you participate in the World's Storyline (though at a chance). If you seriously want a talent, participate in the world's story and see what happens.

I personally think the CC system this game will be using is the best currently being made.
