This was probably the genre's greatest day in history. This man did nothing but ruin every mmo soe made. His cash shop practices, decisions, and money grab came back and kicked him in the ass.Karma is a bitch and i hope his company fails hard. Glad your gone dumb ass.
We'll see what happens, but I'm getting a little sick of this Kickstarter shit too. If Smed (or anyone else) wants to find funding for a new company, let him sell stock or bonds. That is, be willing to share actual ownership.
I'm coming to see Kickstarter as little more than a glorified venue for panhandling.
Gratz Smed. I can't wait to see what you have coming.
Thats easy, F2P games. He says that's all he believes in anymore.
Yupp. And look how well the company ended up by following F2P as religiously as they did. If that didnt teach him a valuable lesson in mmo management then... He is not prepared!
Where is this crazy idea that Smed will make EQ3 coming from? The guy has been the enemy of everything that made EQ work for years, why would he now turn around and embrace it?
No, I suspect that Smed's future lays in apps or whatever. Anything cheap and easy to turn a fast buck on.
This guy is not the MMORPG saviour some of you seem to be looking for...
Like a few others have said "didn't see this comming" This had to be something that had to be longer in the planning then the transition from Sony to Daybreak. Because I am sure there are allot of legal issue's when doing so that take allot of time to solve. Something like this seems to be in the planning even during his Sony period. but simply couldn't afford all the staff to bring over to his new company so made the deal to depart sony as it was either that or close down completely......of course pure speculation on my part..... Though I am sure he needs to start from stretch, doubtfull he will have the EQ licence as I am sure it was part of the transition deal. Perhaps he has a few followers from Sony/Daybreak to go with him. Other then that most "succesfull" developers are already spoken for either with their own indie company's or the big company's. I am sure there is allot of new talent. But the name recognition of Smedly just wouldn't do it. So I am wondering might he be approaching certain potentially successful kickstarter mmorpg's?

I would say that the Smedley's biggest problems are self doubt and the inability to build on a working formula. He has created several great games over the years such as EQ, Planetside and SWG, but then he turns around and changes the formula that made them work. Sometimes he wait for a sequel and sometimes he does it mid-game.
I don't even have to talk about SWG, that one is well known.
Planetside was one of my first MMO's. I played it for two years straight pretty much every day. The graphics started to really look dated by the time I quit playing, but the gameplay was still phenomenal. It's still my favorite FPS game to this very day when it comes down to pure game mechanics and overall level of fun.
When I heard PS2 was on the way I was really excited for it. However, Smedley did his usual job of taking a great set of rules and throwing them in the trash to try to chase the lightening. Where PS1 was a game about trade-off's and building an enjoyable character, PS2 is Call of Dooty with a cash shop. It's absolutely trash. It has nothing whatsoever in common with PS1 except that the faction and vehicle names are lifted from the original game and pasted onto the new game wholesale.
All PS1 needed was to throw out the horrible expansions, give it an awesome graphics facelift and tweak a few weapons here and there.

Avatars are people too
Lack of innovation, Following the trend rather than making it, we have a lot to look forward to!
