I will be one of the first people in line to make fun of the coming kickstarter I predict will be from Smeds new company.  I better stock up on popcorn now in preparation.

I'm going to be sad if Daybreak spirals downward after the wreck it's been in over the year.

John Smedley has announced that he has left Daybreak Game Studio and has formed a new company and is its CEO. Earlier this summer, Smedley announced he was stepping down as president and CEO of Daybreak, but that he would be transitioning to a new position within the company after time away.

All I think about with this guy NGE...biggest flop in history...so basically...who cares what he does..., should retire and be a coop or something.

John Smedley is just a suit that is smart enough to post on Twitter and the forums to generate buzz about his shit games he makes. Talented teams have created some of the best and revolutionary mmos in the genre, only to have Smed interject his opinion and crush any chance the game had at a future. UO, SWG, DCUO, Planetside 2 and countless others because he seems to "know" what we want because he "plays" his shitty games during their Early access and beta stages; what he doesn't understand is we don't want none of his cash shop, casual over bearing, shallow turd games that have pushed forth an epidemic of cashshops in the US.

Basically he is just after the money and not a good game and I think he hinders all the development teams under him because he puts profit first and foremost instead of making a good game. Every single game they have is a cashshop restricting turd that slowly introduce P2W elements.

Good riddence I say. Now if only Aventurine would die off for ruining Darkfall online with their sequel. Mmos need to die and go back to their roots of open world sandbox games where heart and soul of the development team is apparent.

Yeah and without him EQ1 wouldn't have happened and most of the MMORPG genre. Smedly was one of the pioneers. Hello?
That's just patently absurd.  That's like saying that modern aviation wouldn't exist without the Wright Brothers, that mass production wouldn't exist without Henry Ford or that no one would have gone further west than the Mississippi without Lewis and Clark.

He did a few things that would have been done with or without him either way and then he did some other things that only he could do.  Only Nixon could go to China and only Smedley could NGE the best sandbox ever created.

Sure he made one of the first MMORPG's, but it was going to happen one way or the other with or without him in the picture at all.

Pardon me your bias is showing.
Smedley was one of the pioneers (which is what DMKano said) not the only pioneer, but one of them and a big one.

    Over-hyped, over-aggressive sales pitch Kickstarter in 3....2....1......

As for his "wonderful" work while running SOE:
If this guy has been the only thing holding SOE together for the last decade and a half, what does that say about the future for DB now that he is gone?

And finally, let me put on my tin-foil hat for a bit.  I am betting that everyone who has defended Smedley in the last few months knew about his plans to leave and got on his good side in hopes of getting hired by him in his new company. This allows them to abandon the sinking ship and not look like total dicks.  "Seeking new challenges and opportunites at a brand new company" sounds a lot better than, "Getting the hell out of this abortion of a company before it burns to the ground."

Yeah good to see him gone though I wonder if it's any indicator that EQNext's development progress is going horrible right now he left for some reason or another so it's a matter of why, but it's probably good for DayBreak regardless because the guy created a poisonous atmosphere.

Who can tell if Smedley was behind or a influence on the massive amount of bad decisions (game wise) for all SoE games? But he certainly has some responsibility, and I speculate that he wanted too much say in game design decisions. In any case, no one should be employed the same place that many years, it makes you blind to facts to be an insiderfor for too long.. So ultimately a good thing for Daybreak aswell as Smedley.

If his new company should have success, he should stay clear of game design decisions.. That or make mobile games. Lets just say 15 years with Smed left me not a fan, but still.. Wish him good luck and hope the change come with some eye openers that are also acted upon.

Now Smedley is free to pursue a career in gay, animal, S + M porn.

Which is where he belongs, and no where near anything gaming ever again.

(And HAHA for getting thrown out of "your own" company, too bad you ran it into the ground, eh?)

While i don't doubt he has the ego to need to be CEO of a company, i can't help wondering if this is just the prelude to him 'acquiring' some of the assets from Daybreak, possibly a sign that CN are going to be selling off the Daybreak assets wholesale.

I think when they bought SOE they thought EQnext was concept ready and a couple years away. Then they found out that nothing really was in place and that more years were needed so they sacked every1.

I wonder if any investors will be knocking his door down to get in on his new company? I doubt it.

I expect a new message to all media with "all you fmr SWG vets, this time with my new company you can come home soon for real! I promise!"
But anyways, if he goes into PC gaming again: any of his titles will not be a option for me. :pleased:

PS: what title did he refer to in that statement at the time btw?

Well, that was the next logical step after the ridiculous press release about him stepping down as CEO and "taking some time off" from DGC and "rejoining the company at a later date in some new position". Anyone that bought that tripe must be extremely gullible.

It was perfectly obvious that he had been kept on to oversee the transition from SOE to DGC. The new owners want their own appointee in the CEO's chair.

SOE ran off the tracks a long time ago. It's been in a state of Homer Simpson. Lying on its side and kicking its legs in a circle going Woop Woop Woop Woop. I am glad he is gone. Maybe EQ Next will be worth something as a result of Smed's leaving/forced out/or whatever the case may be.

That didn't take long but it's typical of people who do 0 research before a project and think they know what's best for the industry. This man shouldn't be employed anywhere from what I've seen of his work.

So goes a dinosaur of the MMO genre. While his accomplishments at the dawn of the MMO genre (EQ) certainly were important, what he did at SOE in later years leaves alot to be desired and turned many of the fan base off. Maybe he can reinvent himself and the genre again, anything is possible.
