Have Funcom destroyed their own reputation?

MitaraMitara Member UncommonPosts: 755

Have Funcom destroyed their own reputation by producing a chldrens game like LEGO Minifigures, instead of a more grown-up Age of Conan type MMORPG, or have that choice given them a breather in the public mind, letting people forget some of the blunders that they have experienced?

What do you think? Do you think they will come back to producing more mature contents?

They're still producing mature content. The Secret World is incredible.

Funcom did destroy its own reputation - yes

But that has nothing to do with Lego.

As far as I am concerned Funcom lost its reputation when it tacked on Shadowlands to Anarchy Online.
  • I love Funcom games.

I currently do not play any because of Funcom.

Too much fun to be had to take the time required to explain all the reasons Funcom has pissed me off.

Funcom gets smaller and smaller. And instead of focusing on something like Age of Conan and another expansion (Godslayer breathed life and funding in to that game), they further split their resources to take on projects like Minifigures. They are running theirselves into the ground. The only surprise is that they haven't crashed and burned. Only reason they haven't is because they have some mysterious backer that dumps large sums of cash in to the company when desperately needed.

Are you asking if Funcom destroyed their reputation because they made a game your not interested in playing?  They didn't go from making porn movies to Kid movies.

They are a software developer, the word FUN is in their name.  They make games to entertain people.

Why should you or anyone care who they make their games for?  Are you afraid Lego Land is going to show up in the next Secret World update?

What exactly are you so freaked out about you had to make a post?

When Joel Bylos stepped down as the Game Director for all three FunCom MMORPG's earlier this year, he hinted that he was moving onto a new project.

I simply can't understand why this company won't fully support the titles that they have already released.  They're like an addict always chasing the next high.

I believe that their best games already exist and that they need to focus their attention on them rather than chasing new projects every couple of years.

This was my thought as well... "Boo, they made a game I don't care about, they've destroyed their reputation!"

Seriously? OP, where were you when they've launched BLC? image

Agree with h0urg1ass above, they could pay more attention on TSW, AoC and AO. But I don't really mind if they trying... who knows, maybe they'll launch something awesome again. And even if not, it won't "destroy their reputation", at least in my eyes. Yep, I don't like Minifigs either. Yep, I loathed BLC. Still, these are the dudes who gave me TLJ, so all what came after is just the bonus (and that bonus have some real gems among there, too).

I guess I've always thought of Funcom's games as half assed. Lacking vision, with too much focus on marketing or getting a large player base, populistic I guess.

Probably not a bad idea.  The game they are trying to make before is a bit competitive.  And I think they fall behind compare to other games.  Age of conan wasn't very good compare to other mmorpg.

As I see it, if they do a good job with the new game, it will only help their reputation.

No. To clarify, that happened long before Lego, namely AOC, did their image the most harm. EVen though it's one of my favorite MMORPGs. I still can't deny what went down.

Agreed, most of Funcom's wounds are self-inflicted.

Even though TSW is decent, it could have been much more than it turned out to be.

Didn't they do that with Age of Conan in 2008? Terrible MMO.
