I'm a fan of the original X-Com series. I've got the Microprose originals on 3.5 disks, and still play the original via Dos-Box. The decisions it allowed the player were always interesting. But the originals had some flaws -- having to re-equip soldiers every time they stepped off the ship, no customization, etc.
I've also got the Firaxis versions through Steam. It's solid, but lacks some of the decisions that the original had. It did have a longer mission and maintained a lot of the atmosphere. Some of the issues were fixed -- by removing the amount of gear needed in missions. Portable lights (and demolition gear) was noticeably missing. As were specialist bases. But the classes tend to mask the character stats, and are relatively static. (Why can't my Heavy Weapons specialist carry / use a medkit?)
From the above video, the demolition gear is back, along with specific missions to blow things up. There seems to be more emphasis on automated weapons platforms. The carry and evac options seem useful, adding a new concern. I'd like to see how the technology works -- does it start from pistols and rifles again, or are there alien tech from the previous games?
I'm looking forward to this, but X-Com 2 will definitely not be a day one purchase for me.
