No they arent gonna mess it up. It's always the fans that mess it up (high expectations, nostalgia, etc).

They'll probably won't be able to do it any worse than MOO 3 imo

 

MOO 3 was a mess when you are talking about the user interface of the game... despite the fact that MOO series in general are good games

Just because someone bought the rights to master of orion property doesn't mean at all they can make a great sequel to the epic MOO2, as they need to understand what mechanism in the game maked the game really good. It's not enough to have the art director or composer there when it's about gameplay.

MOO2 is a classic and one of my all time favorite games.  I hope Wargaming does it justice.

I was actually one of the closed beta testers for MOO 3. 

This was the time when the developers sent you a build in the mail and you installed it from there.

There was definitely screaming from the beta testers that things were "wrong".

My input (and probably others) was the button where you could automatically populate a squadron (or whatever it was called) as previously you had to go through every ship and drag every single ship into where you wanted. For every group of ships. after a while it was extremely tedious.

There were other issues that I don't remember were ever addressed. For example, if memory serves)  you would enter a battle and the enemy would flee and you had to wait out the time before you could exit the battle. Even on a win that would happen.

@yaminsux: possibly. I can't disagree that fans blow things out of proportion or are resistant to changes in the gameplay. A good example is Fallout where those who loved the original did not like the direction that Bethesda took.

However, If they can capture the essence of Master of Orion and upgrade the graphics a bit and make the AI opponents make better choices then I think it could be good. Barring any issues such as bugs and the like.

One thing I always hated with MOO II and even the Galactic Civilization games is that your allies could turn on you instantly and there was never anything you could do.

For example, one of your people was at a function, had a faux pas, and you were at war. No way to address the situation. Or work out the diplomacy. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to be but I never liked it.

 

My favorite memory from MOO II was when I, early i the game, went to Antares and the screen loaded and I saw my ships and the next thing I saw was them being obliterated one by one quickly and cleanly. Never even saw the enemy. It was great!

Yeah, hopefully its a MOO2 remake, as the first one really was not nearly as good.
