Player harassment in MMO is at an all time high.

KiyorisKiyoris Member RarePosts: 2,130

If players harass others, the atmosphere becomes toxic and unfun.

Compared to when I played EQ, harassment is much much more pronounced.

Players no longer need each other, all the content has become solo friendly and cash shop oriented, so your reputation is meaningless.

Being a jerk in an MMO no longer has a consequence.

This allows people who would have otherwise been tapped on their shoulder by a Guild officer, the community itself, or a GM, to thrive.

In fact, players care so little about others, that instead of the harassers being forced to leave the game because their repuation was so bad, the people GETTING harassed are actually the ones leaving the game.

Just terrible.

That is the price we have to pay for playing with strangers on the internet. And some companies will not cut the weeds if it means less people will be paying for the game.

The gaming industry today is Quantity > Quality.

    Agreed ^^

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

    Let's see.

Compared to the population of EQ at its peak, there are how many more people playing these games? When you have more people you will have more instances of people being dicks.

It is not isolated to these type of games nor does it have any ties to a game being "solo friendly" or based on a cash shop...

    Come on...

When I played EQ back on the RZ server things would get ridiculously rude and out of hand. I had members of certain guilds sending me private messages telling me how this person or that was going to kick my ass in an alley, or they would send me messages talking about how I had sex with my brother. That was your rose-colored glasses game EQ...

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

Everyone has gotten significantly better at video games since the EQ days, thus expectations rise and people get angry when other players don't meet said expectations. Just the nature of the internet.

Thats what happens when companies target console gamers and ultra casuals, and more specifically the younger markets by making art style like WoW and Wildstar, etc.

It was pretty atrocious sometimes on Stormhammer, too, given that we were the only non-PvP server that any of the Zeks could transfer to.  You would, rather commonly, have Zek players that would come over for six months or so to raid and get geared up and then transfer back to their original server the moment the transfer window opened for them - and that sense of "I'm never going to see these people again" just encouraged them to be the biggest asses possible to the guild they had used.

Some games have a small cap when it comes to blacklisting players. I think it was ArcheAge that allowed a tiny number of blocked players and it got annoying when you could not block any more bots and trolls.

Also i would love if /ignored players would also disappear from your screen and not only from chat.

By creepy, do you mean guys playing female characters sending you whispers of sweet nothings to your male characters?

she means creepy as in guys sending harassment tells out of the blue, I'm pretty sure

just got another one when making this topic

apparently this creepo is attracted to my legs

that is on top of the random harassment that isn't sexually tinted

it goes both ways, there's girls who harass too

FFXIV is still somewhat ok regarding harassment, every other game is like a cesspool.

Like people finding out my address, stalking me, getting my phone number, finding my characters on like every game, my Facebook, people sending me mail IRL, following me around different games, trying to send me money, trying to get me to quit my job to live with them, ect. And that's mainly just from WoW.

You wouldn't believe half the stories some of my guildys know/have been a part of rofl.

Heck, even some of the messages I've gotten on this forum would probably make you say 'wtf". XD

wait ... how can other possibly harass you in an instanced solo centric MMO?

In fact, now is 1000x better than the EQ days. In EQ time, people can train you, kill-steal, and a bunch of other things.

Now .. click an instance ... and no one can do a thing ... in some games, loot is rolled individually, so they cannot even ninja.

And yes, people care little about others ... and that is just human nature. The solution is simple .. have less interdependence so no one can ruin your fun.

I had a way worse time with player harassment in EQ than any modern MMO. In EQ you had to contest camps with lots of hungry people. Plenty of FD trains, group whipes etc just so someone could take our spot. At least harassment in current games is ended with the ignore command.

    use ignore bro

The only harassment I see are the constant generalized attacks on groups of gamers by people like the op and this person.

And that is what happens when the other MMO gamers decide that "MMORPG" has no meaning distinguished from "MMO." So you brought such on yourself. Cope. Step the **** off "MMORPG." Or STFU.

Its far worse than that these days.

Cant attack them and kill them and make them die since theres no PvP these days allowed ,only intance and most likely i should be helping those random weirdos because they are now in same team with me.

Cant ignore them in game because when im hunting monsters game forces us to team like we were friends in love doing somekind of weird hearts etc.

    and its getting worse.

Well in my mind there is a line for harassment; if you go in critiquing people (even when constructive) then you kind of asked for what ever comes next regardless of what they say/do. On the other hand if you are minding your own business or ask simple questions and get completely slammed in chat- then they probably have anger management problems.

No but seriously I don't think I've really had any problems with harassment on games with the exception of MOBAs but that is expected. There are games where people are so independent driven that I get ignored but I don't think anyone has ever harassed me where one of us didn't instigated an argument.

When will people learn to not take the internet so seriously- I mean can't you read the "Don't feed the trolls" signs?

  • SalvadorbardSalvadorbard Member UncommonPosts: 100

Yeah, doesn't pretty much every game have an ignore function whose purpose is to deal with situations just like this?

Use it! Harassment is an oft-bandied about term but there's no point complaining when there are tools to avoid and curtail it that are not being used.

  • ozmonoozmono Member UncommonPosts: 1,211

Sure people should use the ignore functions and sure people shouldn't give too much stock to what some random person on the internet thinks, especially if they have no manners, humanity or decency. That said we also have to remember that not all people who play MMORPGs are mature adults. I bet most people here have seen or heard of talks to young girls that they shouldn't be overly concerned about there appearance, especially to the point it affects their health yet they still often are despite being told that. Or all the talks on various other peer pressure. The point is we shouldn't be blaming the victim of getting bullied because we told them how to avoid it after the incident begun, especially since it's often youth involved.

  • mgilbrtsnmgilbrtsn Member EpicPosts: 3,430
Which MMO are you talking about. I play various games and have done so for a rather long time. I haven't seen a global trend of mass issues with harassement. What is your metric?

    nah

    1) you can always hit the "quit" button if there is any little thing you do not like in a group.

    2) you can always solo.
