Is hacking consoles a problem?

I'm playing a game that shares npc's with other console gamers (DD:DA for PS3/Xbox360). My friend lost his game because he rented a hacked npc from another gamer which corrupted his files. Is modding / hacking console games a big thing? What is being done to prevent it?
