Increase active moderation

Dexter2010Dexter2010 Member UncommonPosts: 244

There is an increase of ads flooding the forum; noticeably in The Pub and especially Off Topic. So many in fact, that they are frequently unreported. Please increase moderation activity.

People are repeatedly making 1 time use accounts so please ban their IP addresses. Perhaps allow people to post links only after 20 posts. Ad posts need to be deleted and not just locked because they remain on page 1 for far too long.

There are no more than usual. A couple of us who regularly reported ads have quit because no one else was reporting them. People seemed to not care about the trash laying about and waited for someone else to throw it away.

I quit about 4 months ago. It's taken that long for anyone to show they cared. I guess it's your turn to take out the trash.

I did it regularly last year but took a hiatus from mmorpg.

Sad, that moderation only applies to heated debates.    The spam taking place on MMORPG.com will end up driving readers away.

Unfortunately they don't really have a weekend moderation team, which the spammers and trolls know so both types of posts tend to ramp up on Friday evenings and go through the weekends as they know they are safe until Monday.

I figured this was the case. Anytime I report something on a weekend it seems to take significantly longer for any action to take place; during the week is another story entirely.

I think MMORPG.com should recruit a couple of active posters to volunteer moderators for fighting spam.

I understand that moderating discussion on this kind of website is hard, and managing the moderation team gets harder if you take in more mods, but how about taking some volunteer mods and giving them mod tools with mandate that they are to only delete spam messages that have nothing to do with MMOs and leave moderation of MMO discussion to your more professional moderation team.

We actually do have mods on weekends, they just have a reduced schedule. That said, we have quite a few things in place to deal with spammers, including some behind-the-scenes stuff that does involve the community. Reporting spammers helps, even if it takes a bit for mods to get to them. I have some other levers we can pull if we want to get even more aggressive about dealing with spam (e.g. limiting thread creation on new accounts) and it's certainly something to consider.

Of course, we also have a brand new set of forums in the works and they will have some great built in anti-spam tech that should help out a ton on that front. And no, I don't have an ETA on 'em. I wish I did. I'm super excited to get them online!
