What makes WoW good MMO today?

    Five Reasons!

    1) Solo Activities to do that are addictive (pet battles, dailies and now garrison mission/dailies etc, ability to solo old content for useful extremely rare drop pet/mounts, crafting, playing the auction house for gold, etc)

    2) Ease of grouping - Looking for Raid and Looking for Dungeons, although why did they give up scenarios ? Having players means that you have quicker queues than most games can offer, except a few other games like Rift, which is almost like WoW 2.0 anyway.

    3) Subscription Fee itself (some players really hate Free to Play models and refuse to play Everquest now that it is, and on a similar token won't even play games like Rift and Tera because of their selling items in the marketplace)

    4) Staggered content releases - purposefully designed by blizzard to make you wait so people have to keep paying a subscription until all of the content is released, and you can count on their always being something added later, although Timeless Isle was nothing but a grindfest.  Anytime you quit for a few months, you will return to WoW eventually, once you start missing all of the stuff you never accomplished, or you find out something new was added!

Due to the nature of randomly generated number values and loot rolls, the time it requires for progression raid guilds to make progress and farm enough gear, and all of the rare never existing mounts in WoW, there's always something to go for event though it is a pointless addicting grind.

So,  many of us are stuck on the achievement addiction / constantly trying to get things that are hard to acquire on low drop rates... On top of that there is still point #5 , the most important one of all !

    5) Trade chat!! Oh yes, who can forget that with millions of players, you get some of the best most enlightening, or just plain asinine conversations ever! The pure hilarious comedic value of hanging around in  your garrison and reading trade chat can't be overstated! Few other games have such value for socialization at times.... besides of course Rift, which has many players from Everquest and World of Warcraft...
