these ships are most efficient with an all player crew. You do not need to own a ship ... you could be a non-captain crewmember only (e.g. gunner, scanner operator, mining specialist etc.)
But you can also fly ship solo with an NPC crew ... better crew wants more (in game currency) fees. You can also train your NPC to become better if they stay on your ship longer. NPCs will have different (special) abilities ... areas where they are good at.
It is not recommended to fly a destroyer solo (intended for 25 players). Your ship can be boarded and without a player defense squad the boarding player marines will smear your remains across your bridge screen. There are no solo player pwnmobiles in Star Citizen, no EVE-Online style solo pilot Titans of 10+ km size.
Fun fact ... if your friends want to join you on board of your ship, they can take over temporarily one of your NPCs ("Agent Smith-ing") from anywhere in the Star Citizen Universe. With your permission.
Beware .... if an Agent Smith-ing "friend" is not a true friend but an enemy spy, this could mean that one of your NPC's suddenly can turn traitor and in principle could execute you in your pilot seat.
soo, robert is actually the first one who got multi player ships to work?
neato thanks for the info

No, Vendetta Online had multiplayer ships 6 years ago:
I don't know if VO was the first, but multiplayer ships have been around for a while. You can dock with other ships, repair, reload, or be someone's gunner. I've even run across abandoned player capital ships drifting through empty sectors. SC's implementation looks a bit more ambitious by actually letting you walk around through the ships' interiors, but we'll see how it goes.

(not with player ships) repair, --> check reload, --> partially .. droid commands let you do power management to shields, engines and.... guns (faster reload) or be someone's gunner. --> check I've even run across abandoned player capital ships drifting through empty sectors. --> abandoning ... possible. Ship explodes. --> No boarding except through arranged roleplaying. But THAT was very atmospheric and fun ! I don't know if VO was the first, but multiplayer ships
--> No Agent Smithing back then, however. Only escape pods to leave another ones ship.

True, Buying now is to support the game development and its up to you if you do it or not.
Buying it now is people wanting the best ships from the get go. I think we are a couple of millions passed helping development at this point.

1) Development goals have gone up ... much more of the planned stuff will be available on day 1
2) There is enough reserves to keep the servers running a few years, even if no extra money comes in (unlikely)
A limited number of Scythes were available to backers early in the campaign and there are no plans to sell additional ships. That said, we will absolutely make them available for everyone to try during designated free-fly weeks. Additionally, Imperator subscribers receive a token for additional Scythe time each month (past months stack, so existing Imperators will have a number of days when the ship launches.)"
Ever wanted to fly a Vanduul ship (for free) ? Soon, my young padawan, soon !

The LH307 Genesis passenger liner has been introduced. Going places in style for 40 passengers and 8 crew.
And you are not hauling anonymous closed boxes like in EVE. Ferrying passengers is a profession, with its own tasks and "mini-games".
Do not like the mini-games ? Hire an NPC crew to do it for you.
Inside the Scythe cockpit ... customizable of course ....

If he doesn't agree to my demands I'm going to buy ad space to expose Chris Roberts, and then I'm going to demand that he resign tomorrow and suggest myself to be the new CEO.
