How to make ArcheAge better...

elockeelocke Member UncommonPosts: 4,335

Simple really.  Remove the leveling game.  Just let us have max level toons and we can go from there.  The best parts of the game are after the long boring trudge to cap or have nothing to do with leveling at all i.e. crafting, exploring, sailing, housing.  So why make the playerbase suffer through the most dumbed down questing ever designed and just give you a full set of skill points to play with, as that in itself can be fun too, once you actually have all the skill points.  PVP can be done ASAP and on equal footing if leveling is removed and overall it would just make the game better, IMHO.

I usually enjoy a good leveling game, WoW had one, a few others have had it through the years, but those games made the journey a blast and you were constantly learning how to play your class as you leveled.  In ArcheAge I don't really see any benefit of leveling as combat is very simple, skills pretty much speak for themselves and the story is just bad and not worth even seeing.   There aren't any notable NPC characters to interact with on your journey, so one has to question, why did they even bother with a story/leveling side to the game when the best parts and deeper parts are everything else.

Anyway, that's my thoughts on it.  Not sure I can bring myself to slog through the leveling process just to hit cap.  Crafting is a nightmare due to cost and time.  The only thing I wanted to do was live on the high seas and treasure hunt on the bottom of the ocean and PVP.  Everytime I try to play I get this dazed feeling and just want to go to sleep due to the boring leveling/questing design.  So I do, literally, turn off the game and go lay down.  Had this same problem with ESO and Wildstar but at least those 2 games had a bit better story.  What has the MMO genre come to?  These are the games that represent next gen/2014?  Really?

I somewhat agree, lvl1-50 is like a tutorial to try skills builds keybinds and so... A very booooring tutorial

But, but, but he attacked me when I was low life!

Yes, HE DID, why you cant do the same to him?

Uf that will take me a lot of time...

    HERE IS YOUR QUEST!

Really good point. I suppose the leveling hasn't really bothered me because I kind of enjoy the crafting and so I have done my last 20 levels without killing a mob or doing a quest beyond the few dailies to get gilda stars. I know you can level doing pvp but I am sure that doesn't translate well. It is never fun to be constantly disadvantaged simply by your level.

Perhaps the solution could be to have a character start out with  just 1 class but already maxed out and then allow the others to be added by way of doing a more interesting quest line. Not necessarily long, just enough to make you feel like you earned the new class. It would also make it very easy for them to add new classes in the future. Make getting new classes part of the exploration part of the game.

Leveling is one of the few things the game has thanks to the LP system that has crippled the crafting/farming/gathering.

As long as that is limited, the rest of the game is limited since its all based on it. Becoming a pirate is a PINA without stuff to steal and without it, funneling people into the unprotected zones for trade runs makes finding people to kill more difficult. Then there is the fact that trade runs is the biggest way to bring money into the economy, or the fact that items need to be made for there to even BE an economy. Fewer trade runs across the seas = fewer boats on the waters for pirates to attack.

The LP system needs to be reverted back to sub based levels for paying players with F2P players receiving 10LP per 5 while also increasing available land for farms/houses by around 20% so more people have a reason to patron up. leveling, that's nothing 2-3 days = max level.

They are worse than useless because you want to believe them. They will defend you against critiques that are valid. They will seduce you into believing you are done learning, or into thinking that your work is better than it actually is." ~Raph Koster

    - I'd open up where you can plot or claim and limit the amount of plots or claims you can build yourself.  IF housing was more open I would like this game that much more.

I like this idea.  I've always enjoyed "unlocking" things in a game especially other classes via storylines.  It works for FFXI/FFXIV, why not other games?

Sqaure Enix does branch out in the storytelling department more than most other companies do. I mean look at FFXI and the 3 main starting cities, each with their very own story, plus all the mini/major expansions, plus each of the classes that had their own story. The same format (for the most part) continued on with FFXIV. I know Phantasy Star Online 2 also has some pretty lengthy cutscenes, at least during the early and mid-levels. I never got to level cap since I decided to wait for the North American client... which is taking ages. But very few AAA Japanese MMORPG titles end up coming to our shores. I mean besides Square Enix, SEGA, and maybe one other company I might be missing who else is there? There are about a dozen or so ported Japanese games over here but those don't even come close to being AAA quality. 4gamer.net usually has an end of the year or start of the year statistics of all of their online games. Last time I checked (which was almost a year ago) they had around 100 or so MMORPGs... not including handhelds and iPhone games... in which case you would need to add another 200 or so.

So in reality in the past 15 years you have maybe 2-3 "major" Japanese companies release their MMORPGs over here and that’s it. A good portion of Asian online games come from South Korea and China. If you are looking for a "similar" storyline experience, chances are you are not going to find it.

A good portion of these "other" Asian games don't have a storyline... and the ones that do usually only have 1. It doesn't branch out. The first 10 levels might be slightly different, but after that it usually ends up being the same regardless of race or class chosen. The few that do have a more in-depth storyline usually end up at the halfway point. I think vanilla AION did this. The main storyline (at least the cutscenes) ended around level 25. It was the halfway point between the PVE and PVP content/zones. The same structure is seen in a few other Korean games and it is seen here in ArcheAge. In this case the storyline ends at level 30 in which you are rewarded a cape. Level 30 is the dividing point between PVE and PVP zones.

    http://archeagedatabase.net/us/quests/story/

I finished the Elves storyline and found it to be decent, not bad but not great either. I felt that it could have expanded more but it fell flat towards the end. I'm now halfway through Harani questline... I'll probably comment on it once I'm done. There are very very few Korean MMORPGs that give storytelling a front seat. The closest one I can think of is Blade & Soul (if I am not mistaken the storyline quests take you all the way up to level 50). Again, it is just 1 main story... but at least it carries you through the levels. If anyone has any other Korean-published MMO that has a main story that takes you through all the levels and not the halfway point, I would love to know!

But yeah I don't think any Korean based game has ever gotten close to what Square Enix and SEGA has done with storytelling and cutscenes.

I know... I know... I know... someone will probably say "WELL WE DON'T NEED STORYTELLING IN MMOS, IT SHOULD NOT BE A FOCUS" I know.... I know... I know... don't need to post the same thing for the 10 millionth time. If I don't post this "disclaimer" someone else will. I can just feel it.

    and how about, NO!?

serious dude if you think a game need a fix with mean changing how the game is, maybe teh game is not for you? easier just ask for a new game with X number of features then break a game others enjoy just because you don't?

better spend your time trying to find a better game for you then ask for things like this

FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

They should just pull the game, fix the bugs and various other issues and relaunch sub only.  From what I've been reading, the game was clearly not ready for a western launch.

They weren't ready for any launch in any region... period. TRION can do very little since any change in the client's code has to be done by XL Games. Anything concerning with bots/hacks/cheats can manually be done by TRION, but not much else without any sort of updates/tools to the client. And manually going through all the reports is the least effective way in dealing with this epidemic. This is part of the reason the game failed in South Korea going F2P as well as reducing their 25 servers down to 7. They aren't managing the game well enough to keep up with the new techniques that the botters/cheaters/hackers release. This has been a problem for almost 2 years for the South Korean client and also poses a problem for the Russian client.

The #2 reason is how XL Games is handling the situation. Want to know what the #1 reason most likely is? The client itself. So much of it is on the client side rather than on the server side, that quite a few things can easily be manipulated. XL Games would have to rework the client quite a bit or introduce some new ways to counter the ever-changing cheating methods. They've barely done a good job in the past 2 years, I'm not sure how people expect them to all of a sudden come up with a near fool proof plan.

People were making fun of the bots the first week of release of their very basic behavior (not realizing that is the intent). They aren't going to release the most advanced bots/cheats/hacks right off the bat. They'll start from the basics and work their way up. It's quite frustrating when some/most methods are no longer working:

Once you get to do some serious crafting you begin to see the pretty much Korean nature of this game. The game is incredibly grindy and it is ridiculously boring once you come down to the actual gameplay. I am not talking about the stupid quests. Those quests are the worst I have ever experienced in an MMO.

But the crafting becomes incredibly tedious and grindy. And you do the same thing over and over and over and over again with no end in sight.

Ultimately it's a damn Korean grinder and there is a reason why these Asian grinding sprees don't fare so well here in the WEst.

No I think they weighed in the positives versus the negatives and saw an opportunity. I'm pretty sure they met their Founder/Starter pack sales and possibly even exceeded them. Short term goals were probably met, long term goals... well I don't think they were expecting a client that could be so easily hacked in so many ways. There was no way for them to find out (unless they knew someone internally from XL Games). XL wasn't going to go to TRION and openly tell them "Sure we've been having issues for almost 2 years with hackers/exploiters/cheaters/spammers/etc. oh and by the way want to publish our game?"

About a half dozen new threads have opened up in the official forums, but this one is definitely a new one:

To make the game better, you would need to fix it first, and that is very difficult to do due deep, design flaws - ie. labor system + F2P model, pretty much any game activity tied to limited land ownership and LP, excessive crafting grind and randomness, etc.

All those and quite a handful of others would would require rather large overhaul to make the game "working" and I think it is safe to assume that it is not going to happen.

Despite the negetivity you constantly put up regarding AA, my entire guild still logs on daily. It's not like ESO launch where half of the guild disappeared the first few weeks. People who are in-game, for the most part, enjoy the game.

Is it perfect? no, no game is.

Labor is a non-issue if you realize that combat is part of this game, and you do need to do it from time to time.  Unless you spend 75% of your time crafting is when you will run out of labor. And labor pots are only 6.5g on AH right now for an extra boost every 12 hours. Plus you need mats and time to be able to use all of this labor too. It keeps the pace of the game since there are like 12 different ranks of item quality, people would already be at full mythic by now.

Land will fix itself in time, but due to the game's peak popularity, there is a shortage, but one that can be overcome with diligence.

My main issue with the game, is how long it takes to advance crafts and how actually powerful someone can become with enough time and effort. I feel it should sort of cap out at some point, but it seems that it was designed with the thought that you would dump about 2 years into a character at a minimum. I could see this detracting newer players further down the line.

Still having fun though, something must be wrong with me...

My guess is; they are defending whatever game they are passionate about right now, so no other game is allowed to be successful in the industry. I haven't seen them ever mention the positives about this game to weigh out their argument, so it just makes me think that they want the game to fail for selfish reasons. It would be one thing if I thought their arguments were objective.

The leveling is slightly better than WoW-questing simply because of gliders, open world PvP, over and under achieving. So no need to remove it.

What they have to do is simply get the bot, hacker, and lag situation under control, and the game will do very well.

We all know the real answer why this can never be. Game developers want a game that people will stay with till the end and most games people leave end game. If you start at the end they lose money. Time is money. Just redo EQ1 ya basturds !!!

But this said, the character development is definitely not the weakest point of AA. It's actually even better and more varied than Rift.

No, the main thing they should have done to make ArcheAge better is that they should have limited terrain ownership to one plot (no matter the size) per account per server. They would have largely ameliorated the garden/terrain/housing situation, which is right now completely catastrophic. Want a large farm? You'll have to free up that pumpkin garden of yours for someone else to use.

He makes the right point. To make the game better, leveling needs to go. improving character either has to be UO style or bought through experience that players earn doing various stuff in game. But trion CAN NOT do anything about the game, only XLGames can, i have read in an off topic forum of a manga site that XLGames are changing gilda star earning system in KR version, apparently with the new change there will be a daily gilda star cap of each server, when cap is hit no one will be able to earn gilda star for that day again. i don't know what will happen if that is done in western servers..

So basically you want a MOBA. The leveling in Archeage isn't really that much of a struggle to get through, it is about how long it takes you to beat a single player game.

You'd be thrilled with that wouldn't you.

I don't understand the passion you have for driving off prospective players from a game you've never played but only "read" about.

Over a million people are playing this game despite the crowding issues and do not want a "relaunch".

Erm I have played the game, I've got two 50's, one with T5 plate & hasla, one with T4 leather working on hasla, 2 large plots, and an aquafarm. I'm in a guild with two merchant ships. I would LOVE a relaunch if all these problems could be guaranteed fixed

    Which problems?  Launch problems?

If so, launch is over, time to get on with the game.

If not, why would fixing "the problems" require a relaunch?
