Good Game but.....

cerulean2012cerulean2012 Member UncommonPosts: 492

So because I didn't hit max level and I am not saying this is the greatest game ever I know people are going to throw a fit.

Well I am not going to comment on any max level things.  I am going to comment on what I had going on and the experience I had and yes I can do this since I did play and I did experience it.

So Archeage, yes it is a good game but it isn't a great game and here is my breakdown on it:

Factions - 3 to choose from which is great, so I give it a 90 out of 100.  Very Good and you can be a pirate!

Races - you get 4 to choose from. Two human type, 1 elf and 1 cat based (like FFXIV).  All 4 are humanoid so not much different.  I give this part a 60 out of 100.  OK but again not special.

Character Creator - it is nice, lots of control over designing your character but it is missing the ability to adjust the height of your character (if I missed it then I am sorry).  This makes almost ever character the same height in game and removes diversity. Overall this is an 80 out of 100, it is good but I have seen better.

Classes - you get your typical 5 or is it 6 classes (sorry can't read my notes :-P), anyway they are the typical magic user, warrior, archer and there's a thief/assassin type of character and another who appears to be like a summoner/necromancer.  I played a few of these and they are cool but I think they could have added more so I give this section an 85 out of 100, again good not great.

I am now going to switch for a moment and hit graphics.  The graphics in the game are good.  They look nice but they are missing something.  They don't seem as sharp or colorful as some games.  So I am giving this an 80 out of 100, again it is good not great.

Now back to more about the game play....

Crafting/Gathering - wow, lots of choices.  You have 18, yes 18 different things in this list form your typical carpentry to artist.  A very nice variety and with that I will give it a 95 out of 100.  Great job Archeage!

Backpack/Storage - your get 50 spaces to start which is shared with quest items, not sure why they do this as most new games put quests items in a separate storage but they did it.  During my play time I never felt any crunch but I can see people who are doing a lot of gathering/crafting having issues.  You do get extra storage at NPCs in certain villages which is nice and helps.  You can also get more storage inside of your house, but first you have to build that house.  Another option is buying extra space in the cash shop. I am not a fan of this, but I understand it and it is a persons choice if they spend the money or not.  I think if you are frugal and don't hoard everything you can get by without buying extra space. So I give storage an 80 out of 100.  Always nice to be given more without having to buy it, but the option to buy more is still nice.

Combat (pve type) - I will only comment on the pve combat since I didn't do any pvp.  You have tab targeting which I love, I think the active type of targeting in Tera/ESO is best in FPS games and should stay out of MMOs.  Anyway the combat is active, you can move and fight, sure some skills require you to stand still, but you can use some things while moving.  Very nice combos with a nice indicator when they are available, not some glaring screen pop but a little indicator that is easy to see.  The combat feels active with little to no downtime.  I can see it being fun in pvp but will let others comment on it in that area.  So I give it an 92 out of 100, it is very good.

Not sure what to title this so I won't.  There are a lot of things to do in game.  You can get different types of mounts, obtain and fly a glider (even fight some from it). You can get on boats (even build your own) and have sea battles, even attack things on the coast from the sea. You can build a house and decorate it, create a farm, grow crops or raise livestock.  So quite a few things to do and some that are not in your typical game so I give this part a 95 out of 100, great job again.

Quests - yes folks this game has quests, so if you don't like quest then I am sorry.  I don't mind them and I think if a game is designed that has both normal quests but some that are like GW2 where you hit an area and it just pops up it would be great.  Anyway these are your typical quests, go kill something, go get something and take this to someone.  The writing is good but not great, so a 60 out of 100.

Voice-Overs - ummmm, well some quests will play a cut scene where you think it will talk but it doesn't thus wasting time and doesn't add anything to the game.  Now there are some voice-overs which go with the main storyline.  The actor doing them is just that, doing them.  He never convinced me that he was into the role and it took a lot from the game.  Half the time the voice would end before the text would appear and he would start speaking again while the previous text was still there so if you missed what he said you get distracted trying to read it.  This is a 40 out of 100.  They really missed the ball on this one.

Performance - Well for the most part it is good but in the little villages and in certain areas where there where 10+ people the lag hit.  I know this is beta, but this game has been out in Asia for some time so this should not be an issue.  Mostly what is being done here is the westernization of the game and not the coding of the engine.  Now you can say well it is beta and more people around, fine say that but if this happens in a PVE environment how is it in PVP?  I can't see it being much better and that is scary.  Just for those doubters, I even tried turning my graphics to min and turning off almost all of the optional settings (like name plates) and it still was a problem. So I am only giving this a 50 out of 100.  I do hope it improves for them.

Being ready.  What you say, well this is Trion's ability to be ready to handle the people coming into the game in beta.  They should know already (game is live in Asia) how many people a server will handle, but they started beta with 1 server.  Now come on, your Alpha people are playing you know how many they are and you know how many beta invites you sent so you know how much space you need and 1 server was no where enough.  They did add a second server and quickly fixed a few connections issues but this was a big mistake from the get go.  Fans don't say this was a stress test, this game is LIVE in Asia, they already know what the servers can do, so because of this I give them a 50 out of 100.  Since Rift is doing fine and did good when it launched, I think this area will be ok in the end.

Cash Shop - This is not a debate on pay 2 win, this is just about it (shop) in general.  Let me start by saying I am not a fan of cash shops, but I can tolerate them. I feel that most of the items in the shop are just cosmetic and I don't mind that.  Can I get them in game?  I don't know, but it doesn't bother me.  There are a few items that give boosts, like an instant 1000 labor points potion, but it can only be used once in 12 hours so it only gives a benefit of under 300 total points.  Yes a slight advantage but not bad, so doesn't bother me.  I am not sure if you can take in-game money and convert it to cash shop tokens but I am hopeful that is the case.  I give this an 80 out of 100.

Subscription - Again another hot topic.  I for one would rather not pay subscriptions, I mean saving a few dollars is always nice, but I have and still do play games with them and with Archeage I would go with a sub.  With Archeage you will be able to play free (you will still have to buy the game) but you can play without a subscription.  Now which route you go is up to you, I highly suggest you read up on the differences and way the pros and cons before deciding.  I think Trion is doing a good job with this, maybe some tweaks are still needed but overall it is good.  I will give it a 70 out of 100.

Now to the dreaded.....

Labor Points - Oh my gosh, what a hot topic.  This is one of the items that a lot of people using the pay 2 win scream about.  I understand what they are for (mainly for crafting & gathering, do have other uses) and I think overall it is a good system.  I would even say a 90 out of 100 BUT....having to spend these hard earned points in order to identify items even items you receive as quest rewards is ridiculous!  Come on Trion, stop being greedy, that is all it is, make them spend the labor points so they buy the item from the cash shop.  There is no way you should receive a quest reward that you still have to use labor points to ID!  This is just beyond terrible, fanboys scream as loud as you want but it doesn't change the fact that this part of the game is bad, real bad.  If they changed this one part it would make this system great but because of having to spend your labor points on identifying items to include quest rewards I will only give this section a 10 out of 100!

So over-all I scored most sections good and thought the game was good, something I could play for months maybe even longer, but with the labor point issue I can not support this game.  If they fix the issue then I could see giving this game about an 83 out of 100, but with the issue I have to drop my rating down to a 40 out of 100.

Sorry fans that one issue is BIG and is game breaking.  If they change it I will gladly change my review of the game and even support the game.  Anyway this was my take, if you can deal with the labor point fiasco then you will find a fun game.

There r 3 factions. U forgot Pirates. They even got there own Capital Island.

Also i`m not sure if the "make your own faction" system present in NA AA.

Have to agree with lag. AA RU run in about 45-100 fps. AA NA had drops to 7. I think it will get sorted.

40 out of 100 is the same as 4 out of 10 and 400 out of 4000.

Doubt the game is a 4/10...  even the crappiest games do better than that.

Really you can play as a pirate?  Ok, see I didn't know that, that is a nice bonus and I will fix it.

I would give this game a better score but I can not support this labor point issue.

Most of the stuff you dont like has no issue with me, Voice over, im not a baby I know how to read so this doesnt bother me. Performance, Been in areas with 100+ people and no dips in performance so Im good there. You can buy, with in game gold, labor points from people making it free and not pay to win so that doesnt bother me either.

This would give the game about a 90. Not too bad good review. Thanks for the heads up.

Not saying game is pay 2 win, I don't think it is, my main issue is the fact you have to spend labor points to ID items especially items you receive as quest rewards.  Overall I really like the game.

It's not Trion, it's Xl that is greedy and i agree. The whole thing of having to discover the items you get from quests is absurd. The bags are not bad though. Before you could get like 27-50 coppers from mobs, now you get 1-10s depending on the bags or more. Yeah they use LPs too, but you get a lot more money.

So over-all I scored most sections good and thought the game was good, something I could play for months maybe even longer, but with the labor point issue I can not support this game.  If they fix the issue then I could see giving this game about an 83 out of 100, but with the issue I have to drop my rating down to a 40 out of 100.

Just pointed out a few things that might not be easy to figure out.

not saying you didn't try, but you are off in a couple of points.

    1. Character creations being tall / short doesn't matter, and there will be more races added later.

    2. Those aren't classes, those are skill traits. Your class is essentially what your selected skill traits make it out to be. You can take all dmg skill traits or mix with healing or tanking is up to you. There are preferred classes but not just 6 in total.

    3. More continent is being planned to be opened, the game essentially try to have you attempt to learn your "class" then you can go ahead do w/e way you want to level past lvl 30 (main quest also ends around here). But if you already know the game, you don't have to quest to level, you can do w/e you want to level still starting lvl 10.

    4. crafting you can only master selected few as you will run out of upgrade points, so you won't be able to select all crafting skills.

    5. many of the voice over are taken out i believe because they haven't finish the english version

    6. performance is a well known issue for every single version there is if you used DX11 option (in fact it is using gimped DX10 because the version of the 3D engine is not the latest one), selecting DX9 might improve it for you.

I feel that if a system is in place that does not somehow benefit the player, it should not be in the game at all. Labor Point benefit the company making the game, and they have no beneficial quality to this game as far as the player is concerned. You can side-step and rationalize their use in the game, but at the end of the day we would all be better off not having them in the game at all.

I don't understand when people play the beta of a game and see its average they still buy it like wildstar and archeage.

I bought eso but I should not have subbed for 2 months.

Currently I do not plan on buying the game.

As far as the DX11/DX9 issue.  I should have mentioned that I switched from 11 to 9 and saw some improvements but not enough to rate it better then I did and for some reason the game resets the setting to 11 every time I restart. Now if your someone who is not having any issues with this then that is great but I am and others are.

As far as options that will happen later in game I did not talk about since I did not experience them, such as pvp.

As far as the NDA goes, I think everything I talked about can be found on their website so it is already public knowledge.  If the labor point thing isn't then oh well, it needs to be known by people!

As far as labor points go, it is nice that you can trade them, get them in the auction house and even get the item form the cash shop, the main point about them is the fact that you have to use them to identify items given to you from quests.  This is a very very bad thing.  Otherwise, I think the labor point system is good.

I also realize that you can not do every craft trait on one character, I was only starting that there are a lot of options.

If they are adding new races that is good, more choices are always better.

If they are adding voice-overs to those quest cut scenes then that is good because as they look now it doesn't really work.

Exactly.  People post here like it's a sub based game or something.  It's F2P... play it or don't play it, can't get any simpler than that.

Well, you heard it from aeolus811tw - character height doesn't matter.

It's a good thing he posted, or some of us might have still had the mistaken belief that character height was a nice customization option.

With that nonsense aside, I'd like to thank the OP for the detailed beta review. He didn't have to invest the time but he did for our benefit.

    1. Character creations being tall / short doesn't matter, and there will be more races added later.

I know right.  So we have thousands of same looking characters running around...who cares.

Anyway, thank you for your comment.

DaveCole forgot to quote your post...

"I feel that if a system is in place that does not somehow benefit the player, it should not be in the game at all. Labor Point benefit the company making the game, and they have no beneficial quality to this game as far as the player is concerned. You can side-step and rationalize their use in the game, but at the end of the day we would all be better off not having them in the game at all."

Let me say that I am not against labor points.  I am against having to use them to id items you get as rewards from quests. Now you do not have to buy labor points.  you do not need to get them from other people or off of the auction house or even the cash shop.  The game gives you the points as you play, so you don't have to buy them ever.

My complaint has nothing to do with the cash shop.  I truly feel that the labor point system in regards to your labor crafts is a good idea, I just have issue with that 1 area.

So for those people thinking that you have to buy labor points again you do not need to, they are only a convience  in the cash shop.

I bought eso but I should not have subbed for 2 months.

seems like 800,000 folks didn't agree with you about ESO ,,,,,maybe your odds will improve with Archeage but I wouldn't count on it

In other words, you want him to summarize, "this game sucks lololol".

He gave a good review of his opinions on different aspects of the game (i disagree with them on combat and storage though).  If your ADD isn't up to the task of reading, then don't comment.

so you went from everyone looking the same (which is kinda there in every mmorpg) to every midget and giant looking the same.

What did it change? And this matters why?

Classes - you get your typical 5 or is it 6 classes (sorry can't read my notes :-P), anyway they are the typical magic user, warrior, archer and there's a thief/assassin type of character and another who appears to be like a summoner/necromancer.  I played a few of these and they are cool but I think they could have added more so I give this section an 85 out of 100, again good not great.

You docked them points on classes because you "think they could have added more."

There are 120 classes available in the game.

Here is a comprehensive list: http://archeage.gamepedia.com/Classes

As for labor, using labor points to ID items is sort of like if you've ever played WOW, low level PVP balance.  Its messed up but nobody cares.  Its not an issue for people who aren't low level newbies and as such it doesn't really impact the "important" parts of the game.  You're totally right that its bad and messed up but the fact is its a very minor issue in the long run and will have no impact on anyone who sticks it out in the game for more than a few weeks.  (Coinpurses though may get more attention, I hope so)

    I got the weekend beta.

Installed the game with anticipation, hoping for something new and refreshing.

I am offered to make a character. All races look the same, one of them with pointy ears, other with catlike face. Whatever, I pick one and move on.

I am offered to customise my character, but there isn't much to customise. 8 faces, 8 haircuts, 8 hair colours, some sliders here and there. Whatever, I pick something that looks good and move on.

I am offered to pick a class. Standard Warrior, mage, archer, rogue, etc. Whatever, I pick one and move on.

Cool, the game starts, here's where I wanted to be. I advance a little, and when I see the first yellow exclamation sign I fear the worst. Yep, I'm in a quest hub. Yep, they asked me to kill 3 boars.

Control Panel -> ArcheAge Beta -> Uninstall.

Are you sure you want to remove ArcheAge Beta and all its elements? -> Yes.

ArcheAge Beta has been successfully removed from your system. -> Thank you.

My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.

It seems people want "inovation" needs to keep playing Tera / ESO / Gw2.

Archeage full potantial comes when you start digging trough the crafting system, when you build your clipper and make your first cross continental gilda star run, when you join a guild and roam the sea to hunt down trade pack runners, when you build your castle on the north continent.

Archeage combined themepark with sandbox and did so in a unique manner that offers the best of both worlds.

Offcourse you cant please the high horse mmo players anymore, they expect tripple A mmo that has never been made yet with a free price tag.

Seems the current batch of mmo players are nothing but crying little kids that cannot be pleased no matter what a studio does.

They dont find any mmo fun as they all suck, yet they keep looking for something they will never find.

    The perfect mmo.

Goodluck on your journey to hit gold, it might take you a lifetime and end up hating and bashing anything that YOU dont like.

Stay bitter and trash anything that you dint find fun but in reality is super fun for other players.

Archeage aint the perfect mmo. but at least it offers the features we missed in tons and tons of mmo's that got released in recent years.

And thats good enough for alot of players who were tired of the carrot on a stick dungeon / raid style mmo's that forces you to to dig in to insane amount of hours trough group play beating scripted bosses over and over and over untill your precious pixel drops and become absolute a few weeks later when the next set of scripts arrive.

Archeage offers a crafting system that also produces the best ingame items you can obtain.

Its no easy task, but a crafters wet dream to hit gold and show off his creations.

Personal preference offcourse, and here is were people differ in style of play.

Some like dungeon crawlers some like to craft.

Archeage offers both, altough open world raiding will be extreme difficult as your server might have guilds searching for blodd 24/7.

No carebear shit, but brutal blood for blood.

And soon you can even create your own faction....how cool is that :)

Its so funny to see all that hate and troll attempts for an mmo that just happen to offer something unique instead of the same turds i have been playing past decade.

WoW clone after wow clone with nothing but carebear raids and instanced battlegrounds.....

Your name or your guild dint mean jackshit.

But yet in Archeage you can play the meta and offer unique services by being a mercenary guild that protects traders.

You can be a pirate and carve out a fearsome name that people want to avoid.

You can be a crafting guild and play the market or produce value products selling to pvp guilds.

Tons and tons of options all these wow clones missed.

Sorry to say but all that hate is comming from frustrated people who cant enjoy an mmo or are plain out bitter and cant find fun in mmo's.

Our gaming community left ESO after 3 weeks and is in Archeage alpha for quite some time and we cannot get enough of it.

And the sad thing is that it had to be a Asian studio that delivered us this kind of mmo instead of a western mmo that we praise so much here, becuase all them asian manga style puber porn mmo's are shit right ?

It seems Asia is creating  alot better mmo's in the upcomming releases.

Archeage / Blade and Soul / Black Desert compared to ESO / Wildstar / ???

Glad we finaly got something better then our western WoW clones <3
