Why I am ashamed to call myself a gamer now.

Then feel free to stop doing so, the gaming community would benefit if the chronic whiners who throw fits on forums while never taking the most logical approach of not throwing money hand over fist into the very thing they claim to hate, would stop associating themselves with those of us who have figured out how to funnel our money into something worthwhile. 

Yeah, I don't mean to attack the op but I "can't" call myself a gamer precisely because of these reasons.

That and the whole "bled to play magic the gathering".

The level of anger and vitriol is so bloated and out of proportion to what is being discussed that anyone on the outside will just be shake their heads and be  horrified at the level of energy invested in this hobby.

This is why I don't talk about games right off the bat at work. This is why I don't talk about games on dates.

I remember a time when you would go to an arcade, just play what you wanted and if someone suggested a particular game you didn't like you would say "nah, that's not good, let's play X instead".

Now things have risen to the level of a crusade if we're lucky.
