Way to many MOBA's

Seriously there is way to many MOBA's coming out to compete with LOL and Dota 2. I guess companies are going where the money is. Also I think this is having an impact on mmo's.

Coming out:

Strife.

Dawngate.

Dead Breed.

Prime World.

Infinite Crisis.

Heroes of the Storm.

If you want to know how it will work out, see WoW and all the other MMORPGs that have been released. ;)

The sad part is the only one I can even remotely see being as successful as LoL or DOTA2 is HotS, just because of Blizzard's large following. The others will fade away into non-existance like HoN etc.

There's actually more than that. But, MOBAs are their own genre. Nothing wrong with it doing well. I just wish more companies would try and innovate with the game type instead of just making dumbed down versions of LoL, which is already a simplified version of DotA.

I don't see what this has to do w/ MMOs, though.

I actually have to agree with this (sadly). Though, from what I hear Prime World has been gaining a lot of popularity. I'm really dreading what HotS is going to do to the MOBA community. There are already enough problems with people ignoring basic game mechanics in these games, because they just wanna chase kills. And from everything I've seen HotS basically does everything it can to reinforce this mentallity.

It's Blizzard's hallmark strategy though, take a game in a genre, design it for even the most casual of players (read, player's that don't want to properly learn how the game should be played) and make them feel successful in doing it. It's a great business strategy with broad appeal that only hurts people who enjoy the competitive spirit of games, which is a much smaller segment that Joe Guy who logs in for 1.5 hours every other day to run one dungeon and still buys stuff in the cash shop.

Strife is aiming to be an even more simplified LoL, with even cartoonier graphics. They may be going for a younger crowd market, who knows. But removing what they call "tedious tasks" is not always the solution. One thing that makes a pro e-sport player stand out is how well they handle the fundamentals (just like any sport). Basketball is not just free shots, dribbling, passing, and a myriad of other small fundamental tasks need to be kept competent in order to succeed.

Dawngate - I dunno much, but some of their characters look like rip-offs from the better known games.

Deadbreed - Also dunno, looks a little D2/PoE inspired in terms of visuals which is nice. But 3v3 instead of 5v5 cuts a lot of gameplay depth in terms of roles to fill.

Primeworld - Not so much a moba, kinda MMORTS.

Infinite Crisis is meh. Shallow and fairly unresponsive (the combat is poorly done, which is a problem because there's not much else going on in MOBA's).

Also Dragons and Titans which I'm sure will be P2W (by Zynga) also DOA as it basically is just a bunch of dragons. Sure you might want to play a red one or a green one, but MOBA's typically have extensive and varied hero pools.

HotS has great potential atm. Even though I'm a DotA2 guy, lots of great iconic characters in HotS and based on gameplay videos it looks smooth. We'll see if Blizzard manages to keep depth and complexity to give a chance at e-sport status, of course, regardless of that I'm sure it will do very well financially and be a big hit.

Oh I know. Business-wise it makes a lot of sense. However I think in the long run it does more harm to games in general. Not only does it directly cheapen their own games, but it starts to push other studios to do the same as it gains in popularity. I can only hope that at some point they will start taking the money they're making, and start focusing it on making better games again. They're really good at releasing fairly polished games, but each game seems to be more handheld than the next. It's why I've stopped playing Blizz games, even though I loved some of their older ones.

Wait what? Lets have a look.

Diablo - invented its genre! You could argue it is a dumbed down version of the then hardcore RPGs like Baldur's Gate. But I see this as a game in its own genre. ARPG.

Starcraft - dumbed down? The RTS that has probably the highest skill ceiling ever is dumbed down? Starcraft 1 and 2 were both brilliant games for people who are competitive. Give me an example of an RTS that requires more skill and I will GLADLY prove you wrong.

Warcraft - I wouldn't call it dumbed down. WC3 required quite a bit of skill but okay you can argue it's a dumbed down Age of Empires 2 or something.

WoW - It's not a dumbed down version of EQ despite what most people on these boards think. IT was actually made for people with lives unlike games like EQ. If you play normal gaming hours like 5-15 hours a week, EQ was just beyond bad for you because you were not getting anywhere.

Hearthstone - I guess you can say it's more simplistic than Magic the gathering or whatever it's called. I personally quickly got bored, not because it's simple but because card games like yu-gi-oh and magic the gathering bore me to tear after 5-6 hours of total gameplay.

HOTS - I give you that. It looks overly simplistic BUT at least it is different. Now league of legends on the other hand is a DOTA clone which dumbed down beyond belief. How anyone who actually played DOTA and perservered to learn the game would ever choose LoL over DOTA 2 is beyond me.

@OP, it doesn't bother me too much. Besides LOL and DOTA 2, the others are mostly extremely unpopular. I can only see HOTS actually pickig up just because it's Blizzard. For me Dota 2 is the only MOBA that's worth it. League of Legends is way toooo simplistic and lacks the variety and strategy of DOTA2.

Did I mention LoL is pay to win? You can't play all heroes without grinding for a couple of thousand hours or paying a truckload of money. And also runes give you an advantage. YOu need to grind those too or pay quite a bit of $$$. DOTA 2 is better in every way gameplaywise and is absolutely free.

So basically you want an MMO? Or am I missing something :D Do you think we should play an MMO where you have 100 classes with 4 skills each?

I was just reading a post here that had the superdata on ARPP. I was surprised to see how low mobas are compaired to games like WOT and TF2.

Sure the top mobas make a lot of money but only because they have massive numbers spending pennies per player. So if your game doesn't attract the population of a small country it's not going to do very well.

Why not?  Many mmorpg classes boil down to spamming the same 4 skills anyway.  At least we'd have 100 classes to choose from.
