Vs EVE

Delicious email received thid morning about Perpetuum, so remembered that at launch, it was extremely similar to Eve.

Now, the years have passed, and would like to know some things:

1. Combat: Up to T2 frigates, Eve combat is: Lock, orbit, shoot everything. How is Perpetuum any different?

2. Skills: Both had levelling by time, so no real active learning, just grinding for cash until you hear that "planned days ago" ding. Differences?

3. Graphics: Eve is constantly being updated graphically, and it's effing beautiful. How is Perpetuum keeping up?

 4. Population: Eve has a constant 10k+ playerbase, mostly hardcore fans. How's the other one?

5. Industry system in Eve is amazingly complex, that's why it's THE spreadsheet game. Perp any good in this regard?

6. Anything else you want to post out :)

Thanks!

    1. Perpetuum's combat vs. Eve's: In this respect, Perpetuum is better than Eve - In Perpetuum, you can use the terrain to your advantage. Therefore, in Perpetuum you have to think about movement and positioning. For example, rockets can fire over mounds, but lasers cannot.

    2. Skills: There are skills to level up through time in Perpetuum, but the main limitation is how slowly it takes to get the money in order to afford to buy a new robot with kit. (In other words, by the time you have the money, you will have skills that are ok). In addition, the equipment you have in Perpetuum seems to be more significant than the skills you aquire.

    3. Graphics: Perpetuum's graphics are ok, but not amazing.

    4. Population: Perpetuum's population is low last time I looked.

    5. Industry: Industry system in Perpetuum is ok, but industry has never been my thing anyway!

    6. Other: One of the biggest problems with Perpetuum is the distances you have to travel. In Eve, you have no obsticles between you and your destination and you have an autopilot in high sec. In Perpetuum, you have to move around manually.

6b. More 'other': The reason I quit Perpetuum is that once I got on to the big mechs, they felt disappointingly underpowered. In addtion, I wanted to be in the fastest robot but this was nerfed - the speed was brought down to fall into line with the other small sizes of robot. I think it was the second problem that was the biggest for me, because I like to go fast and I didn't feel like a special class.

Perpetuum and Darkfall are similar in that they both promise so much concept-wise, and yet a few silly decisions by the devs stop the fun. So near, yet so far.

Been playing for a few hours, and despite being amazing, the ridiculous amount you have to manually travel is baffling.

Not my kind of game. I want to pay to play to have fun, not to go around mountains, looking for a mine spot.

Also, there are very few robots! EVE has dozens of industrial ships, while Perp has what... 5? 6?

    Not for me :(

You can, I think it is SHIFT+left click on map to autotravel. Doesn't work perfectly, but it eases things up alot.

They will bring in more bots after steam launch. But don't worry bout bots in the begining. You'll have enough options to get around til they implement new once.

They do have a fair bit in common.

For anyone truly new to Perp that has tried EVE the biggest difference you will see is in Alpha territories. It isn't optic PvE like High Sec where someone can blow you up anyway. In Alpha they have no capacity to attack you unless you consent.

Industry has similarities in that it is manufacturing, not crafting. Perp is more R&D and there are no seeded blueprints but the assembly is the same.

I can tell you that Nic faucets were not always as restricted as they are now and as a result there are entities out there with a shit ton of Nic that will take true new people exponential amounts of time to obtain. I'm talking hundreds of millions, even billions of Nic. How much this will impact the game remains to be seen. Much like EVE it was possible to blob junk and defeat superior bots, more expensive and harder to replace Bots.  The ratios might vary but it was an option.
