I question if there's a viable market for another Vanguard/EQ1-type MMO. I know Brad is controversial but so were Mark Jacobs and Richard Garriott and they got at least 15k and 22k backers for their respective games on Kickstarter. And honestly, who else is going to make another VG/EQ1 remake other than Brad? It's definitely not going to be SOE and players know that. So if all Brad can come up with is 3k backers, that might be saying less about him and more about the general preferences of MMO players.
They had nothing to show and what they did show was a bland generic fantasy world. Regression and deevolution are not innovative, sure throwing on the rose-colored goggles for another bout of nastolgia sounds great to some but apparently not enough, well with out some proofs.
Plus it would seem that a lot of folks believe they have a bungling moron in charge of their finances.
Completely disagree with this article. I have put over $1,000 in to Camelot Unchained, Star Citizen, and Novus Aeterno. I don't have Kickstarter fatigue, I have bad developer fatigue. Brad admitted he ran a bad campaign and people didn't like his idea.
Also I am starting to get bad article fatigue thanks to MMORPG.COM
The issue is simple. It's Brad McQuaid. The guy who thinks that Everquest was the greatest game ever and it's formula was without flaw. The game which, btw, lost pretty much all of it's subscribers to WoW and they never came back.
Everquest, the game we coulcn't wait to get out of.
So what does Brad give us? Everquest revisited. This shows the complete lack of understanding of the problems with the game and vision.
Everquest had some great ideas and great content, but it also had some very bad ideas. Everquest was successful back then because it was the only viable choice.
Brad, Everquest revisited isn't what we need. If you can't see outside your box then you will fail.
Kickstarter "burnout" would have been one of the last reasons to suggest in this case.
It's curious MMORPG.COM could have missed the mark so badly.
How about: Brad's past? Or, how poorly this KS was structured and rolled out? Or the idea of adding yet another fantasy MMO on to a very long list of fantasy MMOs?
I think a good idea that has innovation, has something to show like pre-alpha or engine capabilities, proved track record from members, a cohesive presentation of what it is going to do and what it won't, will always be backed provided the necessary time, reaching the target audience and a sensible funding goal.
What I have seen is that no FPS or almost none has been funded in KS.. Why? because the market is saturated with then and even FPS fans are already enjoying too much their current games so there isn't big need as for RTS, Strategy or other simulator or Rpgs.
When it comes to MMOs players are FED UP with the status quo no innovation in gameplay mechanics always the same thing boring grind thing, that forces you to kills rats when you start.
I think the overall of crowdfunding backers are not fanboys they do they homework before pledging, although fanboys are important to make the funding campaign get some track and reach more people.

I'll start thinking about it as more of an investment than a purchase when funding a game through Kickstarter actually pays me back some cash!!!
LOL I didnt realize this was the Brad Mcquaid game.
Sorry Brad you used up your good faith in the community with your last mess. Maybe Zynga needs a new guy.
