I just noticed something about the top 25 games here

-Zeno--Zeno- Member CommonPosts: 1,298

The top 25 has good games like Guild Wars 2, Darkfall: Unholy Wars, and EVE Online.  While World of Warcraft, League of Legends, and Aion are much lower on the list.

Maybe the game list is actually working as intended.  Good games are really getting ranked higher.  You would think that with the playerbase WoW has it would be higher on the list too!

It's nice to see the truth sometimes.

I've always been under the impression that the majority of the WoW playerbase is so satisfied with their product they have no reason to come onto this site at all. If I had a complete mmorpg, I sure as hell would not be here.

Or it's just human nature to go to the effort to give something you don't like a bad review.  On the other hand, when you enjoy a game, you play it but never review it at all.....just like "all" of the posts you see here. There's probably a 1000 I hate this game threads to ever single I liked this game ones.

You also have the I want my game to be number one people. The games that are on top now are there because they're new and popular. When a new game comes along that fans want to be made the top game, they'll down rank all the old ones. With fewer and fewer people giving them positive reviews ( see point A ) their ratings go down over time.

You come to this site because you are not satisfied with games or a certain game? That would be like going to see the same movie over and over and closing your eyes to the upcoming trailers!  :D

I still come to the site to see what new MMO's are on the horizon.  I also like to see if other players share the same perspectives that I do on the various games that we all try/play or like/dislike.

I think that WoW still hits the spot for a lot of gamer's.

I think what you likely see here on MMORPG.com = the vocal minority.  I know that nobody really likes to be thought of as the minority vote or whatever, but I do genuinely think that the people that actually post on these boards = a very small % of the global gaming player base.

    I'm not defending WoW.

I've played the game for quite a while, but I don't know that I would label the game as 'best of breed'.  I don't know that I would really give that crown to any game on the market at the moment.

I think the gaming industry is too diluted and polluted with so many 'fly by night' clones of clones with watered down content, lore, etc.,... There needs to be a dramatic purge.

No when I'm in between games I'm more active on forums, watching out for news on upcoming titles. When I'm highly invested into a game my presence on forums, and gaming news sites can drastically drop, even to zero.

Really? Where would you suggest he go to find games? Pornhub?  Irs.gov?

Is possible a lot of people is like me, just play the game.

If they like it, continue to play it, if they don't like it, just stop to play it.  without posting  at all on a forums or take time to rank it. When you have a bit  of downtime or don't feel like logging into a game, read some articles, maybe some forum post, back doing what you were doing before it.

So games ranks might not really reflect the current status of a game.

A find it almost inconcievable that ARR is better then WoW. Say what you want about World of Warcraft but it beats ARR in EVERY SINGLE ASPECT. What exactly does that game do better then WoW? It has better textures - thats about it. Its a total derivative game thats inferior to its copy.

Its like in the early years when the Japanese first started making cars - they were entirely derivative. Now they innovate and are often better.  I was blown away by how small the zones are, how bad the voice acting was (and how it was used mostly for the amazingly boring main quest line)..etc

WoW gets downranked because its not the hipsters choice anymore. They 'jumped the shark' with Pandas - openly pandering to the asian market (that didn't even WANT pandas) and generally screwing up their game. But its still leagues ahead of ARR, SWTOR and RIft - the three major games that rip it off.

almost certainly true, i don't know that the list the OP mentions really is any indication of whether a game is good or not, and in the case of DF;UW at least, is almost certainly not the case, but either way, it does not reflect on a games 'popularity' otherwise you would see games like WoW, SW;TOR, Planetside 2 etc, at the top of the list, so i totally agree, the ranking in all likelihood is not in any way, an indication of the status of the games in question.image

With WoW's subscription numbers it should be higher... or you are the minority with that game.  WoW had its time.  Now games like GW2 and sooner or later Darkfall are replacing it.

GW2 is one of the most shallow piles of trash I've ever been conned into playing. It's hype went from obscene to nonexistent in the span of a month as everyone realized it's even more themepark then WoW with absence of purpose.

In other news, GW2 is still top ten in Xfire and on every server I have been on it is packed with players.

Without trying to be rude, if there were a list of the 25 best restaurants I guarantee you Mcdonalds wouldn't be very high on that list, although it is most likely the biggest or one of the biggest earners in the food industry. As it is with WoW. WoW is fast food sliced and diced for the masses. It was a phenomenal game for its time, amazing that it's still got the player base it does but its definitely not the filet mignon of the genre anymore.

The list might be true when it comes to which game is higher or lower ranked in comparison to other games,

but it's not true as to how popular all those games are, because it's rigged to show games to be more popular than they really are by the owners of mmorpg.com.

So basically all mmorpg's are less popular than what the list indicates.

Since when does popularity have any impact on how "good" something is. Britney spears is REALLY popular. Justin Bieber, again, REALLY popular. The britney spears and justin bieber fans of MMORPGS play WOW.  There it is.

This.  MMORPG.com viewing are MMO connoisseurs.  The people on this site are MMO sluts.  Its been discussed time and time again but WoW players are not MMO players.  They are WoW only players.  Most, if not all of the typical WoW players have never, nor will they ever try a new MMO.  That is why WoW rates lower.

  • SpiiderSpiider Member RarePosts: 1,135

    WOW = mmo for masses

    EVE = niche mmo

Masses dont surf to this page that often. Niche players do.

Stop trolling now? WOW will be terrible even with 100m players playing it (speaking from purely subjective perspective of niche player who despises anything mainstream in gaming).

No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.

We, the posters, can rate games? I never even knew...

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I am in a cross game guild with around 450 active members... wanna guess how many of them vote on this site?

    None.

So the truth is the opinions of the majority of one website and not a game's subs, number of players or revenue? Okay then...

It is the "in thing to do" to make fun of or say WoW sucks. It makes some people feel good about themselves. Truth is, it is still most polished and has the best gameplay and responsiveness of any MMO to date.

The most hated players in the NBA are always Lebron and Kobe.

A good game listens to what the customer wants and does it. A less successful MMO is run like a megalomaniac monarchy were all to soon they find out that only they are the ones thinking that "it's good to be the King!" as the players collectively revolting  here.
