I'd say given the market and lack of intergrity, innovation and soul that's been put into MMO's in the last decade, it's much more appropriate to nominate the "least terrible" one.
As many others have said, there's a reason why Eve Online continuously wins this reward.
Love it or hate it, it embodies everything a MMORPG should be, for better or worse. It's massively, massively multiplayer. It's an online role-playing game. It goes beyond a virtual world - it's a virtual universe that spans across multiple games. It blurs the line between IC/IG and OOC/OOG. It has depth unmatched by any other game in the genre.
It has issues, certainly. The claims of it being a spreadsheet simulator at times aren't completely without merit. But when it comes to being what a MMORPG is supposed to be, there isn't a single game out there that comes even remotely close (and this is coming from someone who adores TSW/Wakfu/GW2).

Original Everquest was and still is the best design and had the best players. The thing that they call Everquest now a days is just a wow clone like all the rest .
personal best overall would be EQ2, the only MMO Ive played for years. before finally leaving it soon 3 years ago (with afew sneak ins afterwards)
mainly original game and 2nd expansion, though have had good times in most of the expansions..RoK being the first "hated expansion" for leveling up to the new cap, due to the solo questcamp running, then group/raids/epic quest were actually good.
The amount of content they steadily put out, as well as the intricacy of its lore make it the best overall mmo experience I've had. It was a game released right at the apex of MMO experiences, when community still mattered and people weren't so hung up on silly little debates such as "themepark vs sandbox".
Best PVP MMORPG overall: Eve Online
Yes, you can play the game without ever setting foot in low sec, but that is exactly WHY the game is the best PVP MMORPG game out there. You dictate how you want to play the game, the game doesn't make that decision for you. Many players who I know to hate PVP have ventured into low sec in Eve Online only to find out it was the most rewarding experience they ever had.
On another note, I would give my soul for Eve Online to be released on tablets. It's like the combat system was perfectly meant for touch screens. Dogfight mechanics do not work very well on a tablet with no controller, whereas Eve's combat system shines extremely well on a "touch-to-target" environment.
WoW overall, still holds its own on top of the list for average players.
LOTRO for being an immersive world
GW2 for PvP fun
and
EVE for sandbox...
But in 2014 things will change...
- Wildstar will be the most Fun MMO
- ESO will do much much better then people believe right now.. Its a bomb for average players.
LOTRO is not immersive(not to the point to "nominate it for an award" based on its immersiveness). Between all the ads to buy shit in almost every menu, and all the "You must complete x quest to continue" or the insta death if you're in an area that you shouldn't be, it kills a good bit of the immersion in that game.
The rest i agree with. However, ESO is gonna tank so hard its gonna be a world record for how fast it fails.
Dark of Age of Camelot without a doubt for me. No game ever gave me such pride in my server/realm, character, class selection and guild as the massive RvR battles this game provided.

2. Everquest 2
Nothing else could grab my attention for more than few weeks or months.

Undeniably Vanilla WoW.
But old school Runescape will always have something others won't, it really was one of a kind.

Nothing else comes close.

Ultima Online
Everquest
World of Warcraft
Eve Online
For me the best here is Eve Online.
Special mention: Diablo
AO. Yep, Best MMO ever. I'd still be playing if the game continued to work after I upgraded my video card.
Hopefully the new engine will bring some life back.
Star Wars Galaxies ( pre cu ) - most fun I've ever had ( and I fear I will never experience anything like it again ) in a MMO.
The potential of SWG was almost unlimited.

...as long as you've no need for those pesky letters RP in your MMORPG...
If you would prefer all of the letters....[many] must be considered near the bottom.
But the OP avoided that issue with the title, didn't he?
SWG - Pre-NGE - Best community and MMO experience ever
Of the current ones I am enjoying EQ2 the most due to the depth of the game.
Best MMORPG overall: EQ2
