Otoh if Quake was released today it would have been a crappy game.

It was cool because it was 3d... And that was about it.

I agree about the DLC thing though... It is getting out of hand in some games (take a look at Trainsimulator 2013/2014... Pay 40$ for the game and then another 5-20$ per locomotive or route...)

This have been a good conversation

That's exactly what a lot of people are complaining about since years... (the "today" in the video's title was 2 years ago as well)

Actually there was a thread before about how badly the games were dumbed down in every genre, I posted in there this one about fps's :)

There is of course the other side to this argument.

Game technology advanced so fast because games started to be made to appeal to a much...much wider audience. way more money, allowed them to do more much faster. So they started making them for people who's idea of fun wasn't being stuck on a boss fight for a week before they could get every jump/dodge etc just right and finish it.

So for people that have been playing games forever or have a higher level of skill, these games kind of suck. For the avg person that just likes to shoot stuff when they get home and don't think throwing a controler at the wall after 2 hrs of failing to do a boss fight, is fun....well these games all seem pretty good.

And then there is the other side of that argument. Everyone started playing pvp. Skill is more popular than progression..In my opinion.

Even the "realistic" games out there now force you through these mind-numbingly boring tutorials and several levels of game play before you can even unlock or use half the weapons available; ARMA, Red Orchestra 2, etc. all have these horrible narrated tutorials YOU CAN'T SKIP and weapons you can't unlock until the games specifically tells you you may have them!

Sounds like themepark mmos. Except the tutorial last 50+ levels.

Well, some games have that "skip tutorial" or "disable tutorial" option, whatever it's called.

It would be incredibly hard to have a dynamic fps campaign...one might end up breaking the game entirely...it's not an mmo in the least for one to make one's own story in some way. -_-

Although it can be done I think.
