My girlfriend and Myself are about to pick up this game because of the lack of good material in MMO's these days. By material, I mean involved quests (Not the WoW-type quests where it really has no impact or back story that *really* matters), beautiful rich landscapes, items-a-plenty, and a community that seems to be of a mature-group.
Like most of you on this board I've played most MMO's for a few months (the good one's for years) and have left them with friends, and memories that just can't be beat any other gaming experience. Ya, I still frequent the great single player games, but MMO's are where it's at for me. So naturually the recent influx of supposed awesome MMO's has blinded me with bad advice from friends, I've wasted some time in pointless free-trails etc. But this game looks to have everything we want, even the xp loss when you die. I used to play EQ and I believe the Risk v Reward factor is lacking in other games. They are just, simply put - too easy. Just like everything else in this world - things are becoming easier, and faster.
Lately I've been playing CoH with my girlfriend, and for the past 8 months we've been loving it. We still do. We just need a break until a new Issue comes out (Issue 4 is soon), but we also want to belong in a fantasy setting and roleplay. We miss the magical, mysterious, unknown that MMO worlds can hold. We believe this game is FFXI. We have friends already playing it, and definitely encourage us to try it. For 20 dollars and a 30 day free trial I'd be silly to say no.
So - my question comes to this: What advice do you have for my girlfriend who wants to be a SMN/Black Mage in the end.. and what I, should be to compliment her. I like Monk and Thieves..
I figure the best leveling for her is to:
Red Mage 1-18. Black/Red 1/1-30/15. SMN/Black 1/1-XX/X I suppose this is how the system works.
I'm thinking of:
Thief 1-18. Monk/Thief 1/1-30/15. NIN/Mnk 1/1-60/30. Mnk/Nin 75/3?
We also play early in the morning a lot as well. Is our team complimenting?.. I know she should have White Mage somewhere in there, but she doesn't like healing ><
Thanks in advance.

I have a lvl 37 SMN for my whm ready when I hit 75, currently 69WHM
A popular combination on my server is SMN/WHM, this is because they do assist in healing whenever possible. Also while BLM maybe a better sub or the MP and the Int, the SMN is best used for physicaldamage dealer by the avatars, and buffing rather than damaging.
In the end using all the buffs via fenrir, titan and garuda, you find out that your SMN may become a little short on MP, specially before 40ish.
Whichever is fine, but to get into more partys, keep WHM up to scratch, doesnt mean you cant go and solo with BLM subbed.
Being a high lvl Mage, I dont know much about high level melee, if you were to solo with the summoner(a specialty for the is to solo worms, and small creatures) ranger would be a good combination for that job, sub nin at 24 when you have utsusemi it becomes a lot useful for tacking those t-vt worms the summoner buffs can help when utsu 1 drops, garuda's aerial armour(doesnt stackw ith blink) and earthen fury for titan.
Maybe you would best like something like thf/nin, thought thf has the tendancy to rely on someone to take dmaage for them, they are also a job which will suck up a lot of MP having a low defence.
Summary:
A simple answer to whether SMN and THF match would be no, compared to the thief, the summoner can be a very indeendant job, where as thf needs the other jobs there for defence and to take the attention off them.
Solution:
A heavy tank type job would suit perfectly with SMNer, for the whm sub it would suit probably pretty well after 22(when smn gets cure 2 with whm sub) with a blm sub the best bet would be a job that doesnt take much damage, perhaps one with nin sub that could take a bit of damage, get utsusemi standing avatar pulls hate, or garuda casts aerial armour.
rng would be a good job but may take too much focus form the avatars and probably gain mroe enmity than the pet, this is a bad thing in the rng's case.
Monk would be alright, but subject to a lot of damage, and also a lot of HP to heal, this job isnt suitable to be placed with nin sub.

Ok, a lot in there I didn't understand and some I did. Try to talk to me as if I've never played the game before, because I haven't
So for her, subbing in WHM somewhere would be nice, but she hates healing. She hates that others will rely on her and if she doesn't get the heal off fast enough she will be to blame. She just likes tremendous damage and pets.
For me, what further advice would you give me if I did want to switch to Ranger. Ranger sounds like a nice combo with her. What Job should I take first? What compliments Ranger in the end as well? Heard Rangers are expensive as well - what can you tell me about that?
For Ranger take the following job path: MNK to 18 > WAR 30 > quest Ninja job > NIN 37(your ultimate goal, but you do not have to be 37 right away) > RNG 75
RNG, as you can assume, is a job that specializes in ranged attacks and high damage. They are by far one of the most damaging jobs in the game, but it comes at a large price... literally. Ranger and Ninja are the two most expensive jobs in the game and having the level both becomes a large drain on your supply of gil. You are expected to have the +1 versions of bows and crossbows(guns when appropriate) and other various equipment.
I'm a THF so i can tell you what you need to know about them. Despite what the other poster said, THF are actually good at soloing, but again you will need a Ninja subjob. THF have the highest evasion in the game and have skill in crossbow. Our daggers are not highly damaging but attack fast , and with Ninja subjob, we gain TP (this allows you to use your special skills, Weaponskills) faster than most other jobs. The ability to use crossbow is extremely handy. We have the ability to use the status effecting bolts such as defense down bolts, drain bolts (recover HP), sleep bolts, blind bolts etc. We also gain a Weaponskill that allows us to bind the enemy in place, Shadowstitch. After you gain this ability you can bind the enemy in place and back away, allowing you to shoot it with Bloody Bolts (the drain type) and recover your HP and refresh you Utsusemi (creates shadows of yourself that enemies attack instead of you) from a safe range.
