I just found out about this field of research, has anyone been following it lately and can tell me exactly where it is at? Whether they are combining this with VR technology (like the Oculus Rift)?

I bought an OCZ Neural Impulse Actuator years ago. It was novel, not practical. In a very small set of circumstances it was very good (very few scenarios within shooters). Other than that it just wasn't practical at all.
I don't regret having purchased it. I had money to burn at the time and it was quite exciting in a few limited situations. But I can't recommend it to anyone. Especially since it's sat in the box collecting dust 99%+ of the time I have owned it.
