THsi came out YEARS AGO as Project Entropia then moved to Entropia Universe.
"Free to Play" but if you want to do anything other than run around and die you have to deposit.
It costs you real money to do anything. You have to buy ammo fore real money, then you weapon 'decays' and you have to spend real money to fix it (same with every other peice of gear). You have to spend real money to 'mine'
The CEO favourite public expression "Take the 'L' out of PLAY and the 'R' out of FREE"

It may be free to download but you can not do ANYTHING unless you buy 'PED' (the in-game 'Gold')
Its named PED because it was the original money used in 'Project Entropia' and stands for 'Project Entropia Dollars'
Project Entropia (2005) became Entropia Universe in 2009 and now its become Planet Calypso its all the same game..
The minute you start to play this game your clothes and all gear start to 'decay' and cost 'ped' to repair or replace.
PED cost US$0.10 each, You can only get 100 Ped for US$10 Dollars and this is not even enough to cover a starting outfit that you constantly have to keep spending ped to repair it, everything cost PED. If you don't spend a lot of money, sooner or later you are left with you indestructible noobie suit you got at the start and that's it.
There is no activity that you can do to earn ped unles you spend a bunch of PED in the first place. Then it pop off a round with a gun and hope for a very poor odds "global" that is usually not worth the PED you spend
The easiest way to describe Planet Entropia is a slot machine that have very bad odds.
I bet those devs got filthy rich with it - there are people with armor and stuff "worth" tens of thousands $$$.
They even are registered as a bank!
Well ok think of it like this.
Pay $30 for a game then have a $15 sub each month.
Now you can play this game and eventually start maknig enough in game that you no longer have to pay a sub.. its actually a decent game, with amazing graphics and a shit ton to do and a pretty big world.... Do you really think it could have been around so long if its as bad as you guys make out.. Sure its not for everyone but thats like any game..
Is it pay to win? well thats hard to say really in a way maybe but its not like the game is made around PVP so putting $1000s into the game might allow you to big yourself up a bit mroe and show off some stuff.. but you could get that by just playing the game.
I will leave it at this.. the game is still very active with new people trying it out every day. If it was as bad as you lot make out then this owuld not be the case and the game would have shut down.
Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.
Completely agreed, been here 4 years and had a great time every step of the way. Choosing your own budget is one of the best parts in my opinion, and unlike what same people might say it is very possible to enjoy yourself and build your skills/gear/assets on a budget smaller than a typical subscription game.
If you want to be the top skilled with the best gear overnight, yeah it'll take a lot of money and its not a wise decision to jump into something new with a boatload of cash just to prove how badass you are.
Use your brain, learn the game, play at the budget you want for your entertainment and you'll have a damn good time if you like mmorpgs, virtual worlds, or any other game class that is encompassed here. Crawl dungeons, race in your dune buggy, be a space pirate..... you get the idea, lots to do.
I can't help thinking that the people that are complaining about the game and the HUGE amount of money they say it cost lack the most important tool you need in the game, which is a brain.
If you go at this game like you do with WoW or some other MMO out there, you will run into some trouble for sure, because this is a game unlike any other out there. With this one you need to take it slow, learn the game, the economy, the skills, the missions and the people. It is not a matter of putting 1000's of dollars in and be uber, just not the way it works.
There are different ways to play this game. One of them is putting in 1000's of dollars and buy an island or asteroid. One other way is by not putting in any money and grind to make a little cash. There is of course also the way in the middle, which is putting in a little money (lets say 15 dollar a month) and use that to go mining or hunting. This will of course not get you uber gear or skills, but gets you enough to enjoy the game hunting smaller mobs and doing smaller mining runs.
The big mistake people make in this game is putting some cash in and buying the biggest gun they can find and go shoot stuff. This might work in other games, but it will not work in this one. You need to gain the skills to use those weapons efficiantly so that it does not cost you more money to use that big gun then you gain from it in loot, same goes for all weapons, tools and armor.
People also look at profit/loss on a hunt by hunt bases, which is not the right way to do it. You need to look at it in the long run. In the long run the overal return you'll get is 90% in TT value (TT value is the base value of everything in game give by the game company) the other 10% you should get in MarkUp by selling to other people. So, with one hunt you may loose some PED, but with the next you will gain a few, thats how it works.
I realize that this game is not for everybody and I see people come in with the WoW mindset en leave very quickly again. But if you do some research and step into this game and realize that everything is real money and there are little to no free handouts, play smart and play within your budget, you will enjoy it for sure.
In case you are wondering, I am playing this game for about 8 years now, am not rich at all and have put in real money and am enjoying it still. This is in a huge way tanks to the people that play it. It is a mature player base (becasue of the real cash economy) which are very helpfull and just fun to be with in general.

Man I spent week in this game sucking sweat just so I can join a hunting group for one day. But I did it for free. The money grind is mind numbingly boring though but you can do it for free .

It is possible to make a real world profit in this game. It involves a lot of time and work, but you can do it.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Serously, the grind in a regular MMO is awful in this game its an incredible waste of time. You might as well go out in the real world and collecting soda cans. I believe I can get 1 PED for every 2 cans I collect where I live, plus the added benefit of getting exercise. Then transfer the money in game to buy your equipment so you can actually play.
Sarcasm aside, I played this game from launch for about 3 straight years and then periodically up until about 2010. This game is truly a casino wrapped in and MMO package. I followed the game prior to its release and was quite excited about the possibility of a real world economy in a game. After many years of careful and strategic play I found myself no closer to developing a consistent positive cash flow, even with developing my skills specifically for my trades. When I did make money It was either through the occasional global, or marking up items on the auction house. In the end I felt that I had to limit my play as I was limiting myself from putting in more than 40 dollars per month. In the end it just seem more logical to play other MMO's for a 15 dollar subscription and enjoy them to their fullest without limitation or concern.
Bottom line, To each his own. There's nothing wrong with this concept, and for some this is probably enjoyable because it does give a certain rush when you have the possibility of hitting a jackpot (global). I just don't care for the masquerade.
Think that is my biggest issue with this game and games like it, specifically F2P games and games that let you in free but charge you for everything.
Id rather just pay a monthly sub, get the whole damn game, same level field as everyone else, no restrictions or worries about losing profit or worrying if next week they are going to add some new must have item in the mall because theres a sale in the shop right now ect.
Im sure this game has been really awesome for those who hit the jackpot, or strive to. You really can make a shitload of money in this game, while most seem to lose large sums of money. Ive known two people who played this, both had too much money and too little sense...I think in total between the two of them they dropped something like $20k real life into the game. Im sure they ended up making back some $19k though.
In the end its all just a dice roll on making your money back and then some...and the community I hear is fantastic. Thing is ive heard of some really horrible things that happen to long time friends in the game when a $5000 item drops between them. You can imagine how shallow the friendships in this game are when a large sum or real life money is sitting there with multiple friends "sharing" their loot.
I would say the game appeals to two different types of people. People with lots of money to blow, and people who are really poor and want to make this a source of income. Personally id rather play a game where the focus is having fun and enjoying ones self.
