Starter's Guide?

I knew this had a reputation as something of an old school game, but I died 4 times during my first quest, trying to kill restless farmers. So clearly I must be doing something wrong

Without knowing approach, playstyle or class choice, not much I can tell you.

 

A lot of mobs are social so you have to learn how to pull at the right time. Also learn the 'consider' system that tells you how hard mobs are even though it can be misleading at times.  1-2 dots = solo. Anything above depends on your own skill or class you play.

Evidently I made the mistake of thinking that when you start off, your skill bar would have all your skills in it (like every other game I've played). It didn't, I had to drag my combat skill to the bar.
