The only issue I have ran into with the game that I wasn't expecting was the sheer amount of player killing there is. But it definately adds to the tension overall. They give you the feeling not to trust anyone.

So everyone killing everyone losing all your stuff and not being able to trust anyone is good how?

it adds an element of fear and self worth. If you face a chance to lose everything arnt you going to be a bit more attatched to your character. this and DayZ are not for the casual player.

And it makes it so that you actually have to build in game relationships, rather than solo constantly. The better players will always be working together.

Are you guys honestly going to try to argue that this game ISN'T a quickly slapped together cash grab?

This game is a huge cash grab.  To the people saying, "Oh but it's in Alpha stage!!", yeah what Alpha stage lasts, what 15 days?  Then Beta starts.....no, no, no.

    No, we aren't.

Actually, unless it changed in the past few months, its the opposite. Paypal will refund you, and the company cannot dispute the chargeback UNLESS there was a physical item shipped.

Ran into this issue on a private server I used to run. My partner lost a lot of money (nearly $50k) in chargebacks when he sold his previous server off to someone else. So with the new server, purchases of the custom PvP equipment (most expensive stuff) was also accompanied by some items shipped to the buyer so that they couldnt charge back via paypal down the road if they quit playing or whatever.

That is bizarre.  I know that when other people tried for MO they could not get a chargeback through PayPal.  They said they do not reverse charges for "virtual" products.

I tried once for a browser based game and even included screenshots of how I did not get what was advertised at all.  They shut down my request right away.  I didn't care about the money as much as the crappy response I got from the company. . now I know why I got that response.  I will have to look into that more. .

but yea. . back to the OP who is likley gone.  You bought something before seeing it just like people did with MO to get into the beta.  Never a good idea.  I would contact the company rather than go through Paypal right away.

EDIT:  Hmm looks like things changed since I had that problem.  Sellers are not protected when it is intangible or digital goods.  Glad to see that although it does mess up sellers.

They know the engine well, they have sued it in their other game war inc.. because of this they should be able to fix any major engine issues pretty fast.

They actually posted on the forums asking the community if they wanted access to alpha as part of the pre-order, of course most said yes as they wanted to help out as soon as they could..

After yesterdays patch they game is very stable and playable.. so i cant see 15 days of alpha being an issue.

The engine was utter trash in War Inc though, I have no idea why you expect them to fix the engine now when they wouldn't fix it in there previous game. Maybe they will now though with all the money they have raked in from this alpha debacle.

Also Big Rigs was utterly broken..

You guys do realise that it's a closed beta right?  It's not there to give people an early look at the game.  It's there so you can report bugs and other issues.  Stop participating in closed betas if you're not going to beta test.
  • SlickShoesSlickShoes Member UncommonPosts: 1,019

It works both ways though, if companies sell access to the beta/alpha then what do they expect in return?

Hardly anyone is going to volunteer to do QA, it's a fucking miserable job.

I've worked in QA for years and it is in no way miserable.  If you're in a closed beta just to feel special because you got the game before everyone else, you're wasting a closed beta key and are hindering the dev team.

It depends massively on what you are testing and the company you work for. I worked on a AAA title and was worked 60-70 hours week, the game was good but the hours weren't. I also worked on a bad game for less hours, it was pretty dire.

Anyway my point is no one here is "wasting" a beta key because they paid for it, are these companies really that naieve to think that everyone that purchases alpha/beta access is going to be a valuable tester.

It's not even easy to get a good job in QA, there is a reason they are picky about who they hire and don't just invite a random mass of people to play.

Why are you offended by alpha debacle?

I am clearly referring to them selling access to the alpha version of the game and then masses of people moaning that the game is broken and not ready/demanding refunds. Now today the devs are apologising for the state of the game. If this was true alpha testing phase there shouldn't even be a need to apologise for the state of a game in alpha.  That is a debacle.

After checking out the embarassment that was War Inc., the base game engine for this game, I could smell the rat lurking behind the dressed up screenshots on The War Z web page.

all i know is that i got a discount on a game by purchasing it this early, When the game comes out its still B2p. I didnt not buy alpha or beta access i bought the game and got access as a bonus. Im enjoying the game fine. If you read the froums things have been removed from this alpha build. This is not a representation of the game. THe game has not been in alpha for 2 weeks(idiots) and beta comes out in oct not fully completed game. I really dont see the problem why people are bitching. The dev team are pretty great follow their forums and you will find that out yourself. I am having ablast playing so you guys in colorado!

    Not really offended lol

This is exactly what i expected from an alpha tested as did many others..

Devs only really appologised because they needed to do somthing to stop all the people crying from posting how unfinished the game was.

I guess it was a mistake them allowing everyone to pre-order and get into alpha, they should have only offered that to people who actually registed to test the game.. So yeah i get where your coming from now.

Saying that for an alpha test the game is now very stable so hopefully they will start to add features in as well as other bug fixes of course.

It is a true alpha testing phase if you consider how long the game REALLY has been in development. And of course they are apologizing for the state of the game. You're forced into it when you have people like YOU clamouring all over the forums about a broken and incomplete game that's in ALPHA.

You didn't pay to test the game. I don't get where the hell people get that from. Paying to test a game would absolutely mean your game access is revoked at launch. With War Z, you paid for early access to an alpha client at a discounted price. You got your moneys worth in the sense you got extra access cheaper than the actual client is going to be at launch.

But jesus christ. When a game says alpha, if you assume it's not in a real alpha state and just want to play early, buy the game, then are disappointed, that is nobody's fault but YOURS.

People have ZERO value over their cash. They throw it at anything and everything because they are desparate to spend it. Then it's spent, they don't feel they have anything to show for it, panic, and demand a refund. Bad financial management and decisions is your bad financial management and decisions. Imagine if every system in the world worked this way.

The only debacle is your actions. The game has had allllll kinds of reviews and reports about the product being questionable due to developer actions, how they have tried to cover their tracks, etc. Yet you still felt it was a good purchase. It's not an alpha debacle, it's going pretty much how everyone who has common sense expected it would go. There's only a small minority of people who see "PAY EARLY AT A DISCOUNTED RATE AND GET ALPHA ACCESS" and actually think it reads, "COMPLETE GAME. BUY NOW, CHEAP. BUGFREE AND COMPLETE WONDERFULNESS!"

I didn't purchase the game at all, I haven't played it at all, you seem to have me confused with someone else although you did address my post to begin with.

They are selling the game at a "discounted" price with added access to the alpha and beta stages of the game, they even have the pricing tiered so some get in to alpha and some in to beta, if that isn't selling access to a phase that is usually closed to consumers then I have no idea what is.

You don't have to play it if you don't want to, you can wait until it's more stable but the majority of people don't think rationally about it and want it NOW NOW  NOW!

I won't touch the game anyway because it has micro transactions as well as you paying a box price.

an alpha is an INTERNAL test. no matter how often you guys wanna say it, this aint no alpha, dudes.

this clearly is a v ery early beta state.

anyway, why discuss over sth that actually never started? "i smell a rat here" is surely one of the lamer troll tries, but since it has neither facts nor an opinion behind it, it's clearly as useless as my contribution to the "topic"

anyway, when seeing the feature list it's hard to come to any other conclusion than "why?!!"

I can't think of many games that actually change from the time they let players in, to the time it goes live, regardless of the name they give the phase (alpha, beta, closed beta, etc.).  Having said that, alpha is usually a very early build meant for the developers and maybe close friends to play, just to test basic things out, like the major gamplay mechanics and game engine stuff.  Letting players in on an Alpha is either stupid on their part, or actually a beta phase named alpha to give them more time to build the game.

Except "most" games use beta as a marketing ploy to get people interested in the game. Why do you think RIFT only had beta weekends as did GW2 and many others. Its to give you a taste of the game and get you excited for whats to come. They already work out most of the bugs through internal testing. Beta's are stress tests and part of there marketing campaign/early money retrieval (Pre-Order/Pay now for Beta access).

Yes War Z did the same thing, but they are significantly smaller then say Bioware and SWTOR or ArenaNet and GW2. So there testing periods are for actually testing. Only time will tell though. I know I have been burned by many a game (FUUUU Mortal Online), so I don't pre-order/pay for games in general unless I have already tested it through a CBT, or have seen extensive gameplay.

"In the immediate future, we have this one, and then we’ve got another one that is actually going to be – so we’re going to have, what we want to do, is in January, what we’re targeting to do, this may or may not happen, so you can’t hold me to it. But what we’re targeting to do, is have a fun anniversary to the Ilum shenanigans that happened. An alien race might invade, and they might crash into Ilum and there might be some new activities that happen on the planet." ~Gabe Amatangelo
