I got a warning because people thought I was trolling on a forum. Didn't have a drop of profanity or anything in the comment. Was a genuine comment. Got another warning because I was supposedly flaming someone as well but another comment that straight up insulted the poster was fine. I don't get the mods. *Shrug*
Think I've gotten a couple warnings I've disputed before, getting one waved. Got one validly for flipping the lid before.
Also been banned once after arguing with a person and ended up talking with a moderator. Ban got lifted and other person got banned.
Problem for me is more that it feel like the report system gets abused by some people. If they pose an argument and get responses they don't like, they report them and it seems there's moderators that don't exactly do their due diligence before commiting to the reports.
EDIT: Actually just looked at my mail folder and gotta say all three events, the two warning and temporay ban, seem entirely bogus, especially since I still recall the context in which I posted them. Being called on trolling after quoting someone and explaining they were trolling a topic, then another that's considered thread hijacking even though I was pointing out someone else had ran off topic.
There was some really missed due diligence there.

HAA! I got one for comparing people that dared speak out against Guild Wars 2 to Jimmy Hoffa and how, you know, they might just end up vanished if they keep that blasphemy up!
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
On an slightly related note: is it even possible to check if a report led to a warning, as in either the reporter orreported got warned? In other forums, it does clearly state in red letters when a post has led to a warning.
If it isn't possible, I suggest it being possible so that people get more of aware of what is ok and what isn't okay more accuretely.
How come people come in my threads, ruin them, attack me, and I say something back I get temp banned... I ignore them, the thread gets locked?
Almost every ban/warning I have comes after somebody decides to call me out or I receive a ridiculous warning/ban because I feel SWTOR was the 2nd worst game now (TSW) being the worst imo that I have every played.

Shoot me and e-mail with an example or two and let's talk!
The most recent example was by one of your Dev's posting a review of an information specialist ie: Foggy Bottom type Mr. Smith Killed by a Goon Squad in Lybia. Ive had posts removed, warned and banned by your mods for anything remotely polictial. Your mods are and have been to heavy handed for a long time.

I forgot to add this was a Post from your Dev on Mr. Smiths playing EvE. It would seem trying to get ahold of some of his cohearts at Langley before his death as it looks his employer the State Department was ignoring them.

Having been warned recently (for good reason, I think), I certainly think about what I write more than I used to. It certainly put a damper on how much I enjoy this site, but they gotta do what they gotta do.
I don't feel that I can truly express my opinion any longer though.
Sure you can, it's all in how you word it and the tone you choose.
Saying that, I do hate getting warnings and even bans for 'relatiation', even when I am calm about it... especially when the original post goes unmodded lol :P

The moderation of MMORPG.com seems to be very, very lethargic, and VERY "MMORPG.com" orientated.
There DEFINITELY seems to be a property bias. What I mean by that is that the mod team seem to be mandated to deal with MMORPG.com-specific products - their staff, content, etc - very strictly. If, for example, you provide a criticism aimed at a writer for being shortsighted, or you point out that a piece of content produced by a certain staff members (they do a lot of streaming) was incorrect or prone to error... you'll quickly find yourself with a nice little warning.
This mentality also seems to apply to certain game properties. The RIFT, Guild Wars 2, SWTOR, Eve and others all seem to suffer heavy handed moderation at the best of times.
The problem is that the MMORPG.com staff don't seem to stick to their own set of rules with any form of consistency, and they don't seem to really care about accountability. They certainly aren't a group that buy into the "respect is something earned" philosophy, at least not in terms of them having to earn our respect.
I also don't think that MikeB is, and this is an entirely professional criticism for him to mull over, very good at his job. I think he deals with the community in the same way an accountant might deal with a spread sheet. I don't think he understands the nuances of community moderation, and certainly he (and the entirey of his team) don't involve themselves in the community to any great degree. Generally I only see MikeB posting when he's telling someone off or responding to the frequent criticisms MMORPG.com employs him to shrug off. I just don't trust in his abilities at all, so I don't think the MMORPG.com community is ever likely to be a well run or pleasant community to take part in.

I do think Mod Edits of sections of posts they think are Inflammatory, is being rather over done. This is MMORPG.com, our forums should be more like WoW and less like Wizard 101.
But of more concern is the way you can use inflammatory comments to close threads. Don’t like what someone is talking about? Start a flame and the thread gets closed down. I have seen this tactic on many sites, not just this one. Of course it is hard to be sure, but when only one flaming post occurs, that should not be cause to close a thread.
Another issue I have long gone on about that relates to this is the stickied threads. Many threads are closed because they relate to matters in a stickied thread. The number of stickied threads gets ever larger each year and the number of closed new threads grows accordingly. Cut down your sticky threads and you will find you have less new ones that “need” closing.

I agree with your comment about the plethera of sticky threads. Why must there only be one thread that covers a topic. If there are 7 Themepark v Sanbox threads going on....so what? Is the purpose to gather intensive/focused information, therefore requiring this crucial information to be harbored in one location? No it is not!! These are discussion forums and by stickying the most popular topics into one sticky thread and locking any other threads that dare offer the same subject matter...the interesting topics become less...interesting.
Idea 1: change the title of this thread to something along the lines of "General Moderation Discussion" so people know what it is. I made one called that which was locked or deleted because this is the "official" one.
Idea 2: when deleting posts, do us the courtesy of explaining the reason, same as if you are giving a warning. I have had posts deleted that I have no idea why. If you expect people to behave you need to tell them what your problem is.
The impression that is left is that some moderators delete posts that are against their favourite games but no warning as that might get appealed to the community manager.
Nevermind closing threads, I think the 2-3 day bans constantly are the most frustrating.
Debates and arguments keep the forum dwellers interested and visiting the site, getting banned does not, I dissapear for weeks usually when I get banned because I forget about the site.
I've been banned like 4 times and I haven't even been here for a year.
I think I have been banned about 20 times or so now. Yeah it gets annoying for sure. Which is why I typically visit the forums daily but hardly every post. I used to post a lot, but I get tired of the heavy hand of the law around here so I keep to myself for the past few years now.
**EDIT - I think I just come here to see what color Pokkets hair is going to be from week to week, that is typically more fun than reading all the dribble.
I'm confused as to what the heck we are allowed to discusss? Someone make a post that may or may not be releated to an upcomming release, and it's considered spam and gets locked? Seriously?
I have noticed that when OP is flamed or bashed the whole topic is locked. It would be lot better to remove the inflammatory posts and keep the topic going because many times there is interesting discussion going on.
Closing a topic entirely just encourages these people who purposely troll and derail topics to get it locked. Or is too much in convenience to go through 10 to 15 pages and remove the troll posts? i have seen this happening a lot lately and has become one of the tactics to get a topic locked.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
Some guy posted gw2 has more bots than actual players (among other nonsense in an Anti gw2 diatribe)
For posting something along the lines of "lol more bots than players, really?"
I think there's a luck of the draw depending on who's moderating at the time and what games they like.
I would have challenged that one if it went as you say.
