Sarcasm and hype

QuirhidQuirhid Member UncommonPosts: 6,230

I wonder how much of the hype is born out of misunderstanding and sarcasm?

Exaggerated examples:

A: "Yeah, this game will be the next coming of Jesus." (sarcasm)

B: "OMG, A said, this game will be the next coming of Jesus!"

OR

A: "It would be nice to have a feature X"

B: "This game has feature X? Thats awesome!

What do you think?

If you're talking about GW2 or SWTOR, most of the over-hype is based on facts, I've not seen anyone claim more than is true. The problem comes in their expectations of what others think.

Just because a core crowd of people are really excited about MMO X or Feature Y, doesn't mean the majority of people are.

Though there are a few people who lack sufficient knowledge of other games to know whether features are new or simply borrowed and improved (dynamic events is the obvious one).

I've not seen any cases of people misquoting or misunderstanding others like in your examples.
