nowadays in MMOs only differnence I have seen between games with dungeon finders and games without is wouthout them people sit and spam LF1M or LF Healer or LF Tank. I really don't understand the it destroys communities argument. Doesn't matter who you group with if it's a set of random people its a set of random people whether you get them together from chat or a LFG tool it really isn't going to matter. With a LFG tool at least when someone bails for whatever reason then at least you don't have ot spend another 30+ min spamming chat to find a replacement. Obviously best is just group up with friends and guild memebers but for many that's not always an option and LFG tool allows people who have limited game time a chance to enjoy dungeons as much as possible..
now for the topic at hand... in a non-trinity game honestly i don't see it a huge issue since you generally just need 5 decent players. I still owuld'nt be against one though just to keep the LFG spam out of chat. But at least I won't need to spam for an hour just to find a healer.
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. I would use it but I'd rather they just add a completely global LFG channel that everyone automatically joins.
That is and has always been an utterly bad idea. If you have a global chat channel, no matter if you name it LFG or TrollChannel, it will be invaded by all the attention seekers of the game and spammed to death. It happened in every single game which tried that.
What is needed is a global LFG tool that doesn't involved direct chat - then people get a list of others willing to do the same content, and can contact them via /whisper.
Hero chat in Lineage 2 was pretty cool, it was global, you had to be a hero to use it and you could only send a message every 30 seconds, most heroes would shout stuff for people if you asked them nicely.
Global channels generally are a pretty bad idea other than very specific examples, trade channels end up being a spam fest as it is and they arent global.
I don't really consider standing in Lion's Arch spamming "Level 50 Guardian LFG for dungeons" to be socializing...so I voted yes for dungeon finder . I never understood why so many people have an issue with dungeon finder.

Yeah, but that can't work for a LFG channel sadly - everybody must be able to find a group, not just a selected few "elite"

dungeon finders benefits imho far outweigh the negatives in todays games with todays MMO players. If you don't like thme just stick to your guild or friends I honestly don't see why people make a huge deal about them. For people like me who don't usually get a ton to time to play would love to just jump into a dungeon and not have to worry about spamming chat hoping a may find some people before I need to stop playing... really don't see the big downside but as I said above in a non-trinity game I don't think it's going to be as big of issue as it was for other recent trinity based games.

I don't think people have an issue with a "group finder", but yes, they have (including me) with a fully automated dungeon finder. A tool where you can list yourself as willing to do "dungeon X", and which then displays all the other people and groups in formation for "dungeon X", would work just as well for GW2. You can then contact (you know, talk to people) those listed people and join their group or form your own... then everybody uses the dungeon's fast travel point, and there you go.

With no dungeon tool you will actually try to befriend people in order to get a working group going faster in the future. In wow even though my friends list is full of people I signed up for dungeons solo. And none of those people on my friends list was added as the result of a dungeon. Old school group finding makes you longterm friends, and dungeon finders makes you neglect the friends you already have enough all the while not gaining any new ones.

This is a great point. Let's just for a minute put aside the spoonfed gamers of today that just expect things to happen the same second they realize they want to do it, certain in-game mechanics (while they do make it easy for the lazy and impatient) they can kill or cripple other aspects of a game.

that's such a ridiculous argument and if you think that you haven't been playing these games long.. nowadays people sit and spam chat for dungeons if there is no tool. If you want to make firends go oout and help people questing, group up and makes friends. Having a dungeon finder does not destroy peoples ability to make friends in these games in anyway.. I actually added TONS of people to my firends list in Rift who I had been matched with via dungeon finder..

Well to me, the type of "talking to people" that you mention really seems a lot like work, and not like socialization. You are just talking to people for a very specific purpose, i.e. "do you want to join my group?" This is very much how things work at my workplace where I often need to ask others for things like "do you have the Windows 2008 server image?"
This is not socialization...this is work. The person is just a means to an end for this task. If I could find out who has the windows 2008 server image by looking in a database rather than asking people, I would do that every time. Sure I could, actuallysocialize with my coworkers that I am questioning if I wanted...but that would be entirely out of the scope of trying to find the server image...just like socializing with people who are LFG is out of the scope of LFG.
If you want to socialize, then you can definitely do that in the general chat channels, with your guild, or just with random players you find. But I seriously don't see how spamming LFG or LFM is socialization...it's more like enforced personals adds lol .

You know what's funny? I actually made some friends and even exchanged emails with a guy in the brief time of these BWEs. And it was simply because he initiated a conversation by asking how I got to a vista, then we got to talking about other things.
People shouldn't need the forced communication of idleness of LFG to make friends. If you do, then well, you were never really trying to make friends in the first place and your argument is moot. Also...why don't you just talk to your group that dungeon finder sets you up with?????

It's basically the same than a Dungeon Finder, except it leaves the decision of which group/person to join to the user.
You have a list of groups in formation and can join whatever group you want.
The group leader gets a message "xxx (level <L>, class <C>) wants to join your group <yes> <no>".
Not much more "work" than a fully automatic dungeon finder, but still leaves a choice to both the group and the potential new member to choose with who they want to play.

yea i'm fine with that I think issue with swtor is it wasn't layed out in a way many people even noticed it was there at launch.. But that implementation is better than nothing at all imho. I don't mind fully automatted but can see the argument against it and if it's layed out in a decent and easy to use format the way you propose be more than adequate especially in a non trinity type game

I've made more friends in tsw endgame during one week than I've made in wow the last two years. No matter how you spin it lazy gamers' need to have things NOW destroys communities. I'm all for having a system that facilitates group finding. But no automation! The next logic step is automated guild finding...
But I seriously don't see how spamming LFG or LFM is socialization...it's more like enforced personals adds lol .

You're right, it's not LFG spamming, but it's still a completely unnecessary manual "interrogation" process. Instead of LFG spamming, you just look at a list of people who are LFG and keep spamming whispers "hey saw you are LFG, want to join for Ascalon Catacombs?"
How is this all that much better than LFG spamming? I guess it's just a bit more organized? I still don't see what the point of not automating this is. Whispering "LFG or LFM" to people is no more socialization than spamming LFG is.
This is a hangout for a lot of hard core/non-casual players. The poll results will likely be scewed in their favor as I think they overlly represented on this site (as opposed to a percentage of actual game population).
DF tools I think have gotten a bad rap from this crowd and become the whipping boy for bad social behavior. Bad Social behavior is mostly a product of the amonimity and this medium of communication (non-face to face). The reason games "seem" better previous to DF tools is that it's easier to find fully invested players with great amounts of freetime. By sheer time and investment these players are better and more willing to fully embrace the social aspects of the game. Why is it easier to find them? Because they are the only ones left in the pool of players willing to put up with the time requirements for putting togeather a group for a dungeoun.
Is short non-causals get a better game by eliminating casuals. Now I understand this is the dream for some. But its unrealistic and it isn't Arenanets intention to eliminate casuals from dungeoun content. Without a DF tool finding a group becomes just another barrier to entry for the casual audience. It's in the same category as ridiculous the long leveling times, harsh death penalties and massivily scaled raid drops.
Maybe your right and trinity spots were the reason groups took to much time to put togeather in previous game. I doubt it. WoW, Rift and SWTOR didn't just add DF tools because a small vocal minority screamed for it. They added it because they data-mined and found dungeouns were under utilised for a siginifigant portion of thier player base.
I somewhat agree with the poster above that its inevitable. Arenanet will data-mine just like everyone else and if enough players aren't doing dungeouns they will add a DF tool. Honestly wouldn't you prefer that to something like decreasing dungeoun difficulty or making them soloable (or some other casual only change)?
I find that dungeon finders make games anti-social (best examples: WoW and D3). You press a button and join a group with people you will never see again, Nobody actually talks and if there's a wipe people leave without saying a word. It turns people into robots. It's literally the cancer of MMOs.

The SW:TOR problem is a bit different actually I think... you had to get to your ship, and go to the dungeon or the fleet, all of which involved a couple of very long loading screens.
In GW2 there's no such problem. You can instantly teleport to the other side of the world with a minimal loading screen, just in front of the dungeon.

guess what? PLENTY of groups I have played in games with no dungeon finder tool nobody said a word after the group was put together and plenty everyone talked in both cases. The tool is just that a tool the social aspect is up to the person.

yea I agree swtor it was two fold. The fact most didn't even know the lfg feature was in the game AND the fact you had to wait and travel just to get to a point ot get transported to the dungeon.. I agree GW2 won't have this issue.

It's literally the cancer of MMOs.
my review of GW2
The SW:TOR problem is a bit different actually I think... you had to get to your ship, and go to the dungeon or the fleet, all of which involved a couple of very long loading screens.
In GW2 there's no such problem. You can instantly teleport to the other side of the world with a minimal loading screen, just in front of the dungeon.
Respect, walk
Are you talkin' to me? Are you talkin' to me?

guess what? PLENTY of groups I have played in games with no dungeon finder tool nobody said a word after the group was put together and plenty everyone talked in both cases. The tool is just that a tool the social aspect is up to the person.
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
yea I agree swtor it was two fold. The fact most didn't even know the lfg feature was in the game AND the fact you had to wait and travel just to get to a point ot get transported to the dungeon.. I agree GW2 won't have this issue.
