I'd like to know this as well just out of curiosity. I'll most likely be skipping this upgrade, Win7 is still great. I didnt even bother testing out 8.....but woud still love some info on how its working out for others and those who plan on upgrading.
Looks like this thread is a dud, I guess sane people don't use windows 8 lol
I've been running Windows 8 in a VM, but only for tinkering with the new version of Visual Studio and metro apps. 3D acceleration isn't great in virtual machines, so I wouldn't be able to give a fair opinion on gaming in Windows 8 if I tried.
Otherwise I like what I've seen so far. Windows 8's new touch-inspired start menu is interesting, the new Windows Explorer is cool, and the new Task Manager is amazing. Also, in desktop mode you'll see windows don't have rounded corners anymore, which actually goes a long way to make everything seem more professional and clean.
Also the new metro apps offer some really cool features. Imagine combining the features of your XBOX 360 with your Windows OS. Literally, this is what Microsoft has done with Windows 8. I'm not sure about how the gaming will work, but you definitely have access to your XBOX 360 features such as watching videos from XBOX Live.
I won't recommend buying Windows 8 until I have used the final version myself on actual hardware, rather than testing a preview version on a VM.
As a someone who has owned the failures that were Windows ME, Windows Vista x64, and now Windows 7 x64, I REFUSE to adopt Windows 8 at the outset. (This coming from someone who started with 3.1 and owned every OS since) Windows 7 x64 is the only one of the 3 mentioned that were ok but that was because the drivers and utilities FINALLY caught up with the OS.
I've been screwed too many times by lame attempts at release (same with my MMO's I fear). The drivers, the difference in x86/64, there are too many issues at the outset and I'm not paying a sizable chunk of my cash to test windows for them anymore.

Why would I pay to Gimp my desktop pc with a tablet / phone UI?
Why would I pay to get bent over and shafted royally by Microsoft just like a xbox user?
Win 7 is this last windows I buy. Win 8 is bad for games, its Microsoft attempt to own the pc as a gaming platform, long term it will mean paying console prices for pc games, without getting a discount on the hardware like console users do.

Windows 7 x64 is actually one of their largest successes.
What exactly don't you like about it, because on a prefessional & personal medium it's better than XP by leaps & bounds.

Windows 7 only ok?
Its the best OS microsoft have produced full stop...
Vista was not terrible either infact i ran Vista x64 since the early beta and never had any real issues with it... infact i thought it was better than XP.. but when 7 came along wow... they had jsut taken what was good in vista and improved it even more..
Hopefully they will being donig the same with windows 8.
The only real lame version of windows was ME it was just pointless..
I have yet to pick up windows 8 yet as I aint had the time to mess around with it.. hopefully ill get a chance soon
I have been using win 8 the past few weeks. So far I have not had any compatibility issues. All drivers have been recognized and I have been playing Skyrim and The Secret World without any issues. I have not noticed any performance boost when gaming, but I didn't expect any since i normally run Win 7.
Even if the OS doesn't give me any issues in the future, I wouldn't recommend anyone upgrading if they currently have Win 7. If a person is using Vista or XP then I may recommend it. After all the upgrade will be only $40 from release in October, up until Jan 31, 2013
Can't find the Windows 8 forum I replied to a week ago, so this will have to do. Windows 8 x64 Enterprise.
Been running it since last week. Windows 8 has some initial menu/appearance/navigation issues (namely the Start Screen which replaces the Start Menu) that takes some getting used to. I haven't found a great deal of use for it now, but I think I understand their idea behind it after seeing it in place (moving from numerous windows cluttered on the screen to different screens altogether for functions).
Performance-wise, I have noticed no visible difference between this and Win7 x64. I have played both TSW and TOR and am getting about the same FPS, performance as before.
I don't really see any advantages in running Windows 8 yet, aside from the occasional new window dialog (hey, when you copy files it shows a cool graph that fluctuates with the transfer speed). Infrastructure-wise, it from the outset, it looks like it might be very similar to 7, but I haven't really toyed around with that end much.
I have had one issue with a Creative Labs Music FX card. The drivers are beta for 8 and if you ever Restart your PC (not shutdown), it loses the sound until you reinstall.
That's only issue so far.
Finally, is it worth the $39 upgrade (or w/e it is)? Not sure yet.
It is the easiest Windows installation ever. Literally takes 20 to 30 minutes to completely install Windows 8. No need to hunt down drivers or anything, it does all that for you. It is also a bit faster, but I don't have any games on my test PC.
The menu sucks. But it runs nice, and I don't have any problems with it (aside from the menu).
My Skyrim, Fallout 4, Starbound and WoW + other game mods at MODDB:
currently using win xp, if i was going to change it, then it would be for win 7 64bit .. win 8 is cheap for a reason, its no good for gaming on, too many lock ins, xbox live apparently is part of the interface, a real wtf moment there, win8 is more like an itunes interface than an OS.. its purely commercial driven, and not designed for the user, especially if that user is a gamer, it might make a limited amount of sense on a tablet PC but, imo, win 8 will go down as an epic fail, its really that bad.

The Desktop is still here, the only thing that's different is the Windows 8 style UI replaced the archaic Start menu. The hyperbole people spout about Win8 is ridiculous.
Win8 is great for gaming, I've been running it as my main OS since CP came out and it's more stable than Win7. People's concerns over the UI are silly beyond I don't like how it looks. Hit your windows key and type the first letter of what you're trying to run and it starts to populate a list of applications starting with that letter. You could also just put a shortcut on your taskbar or your desktop. You can also create your own menus on your taskbar using shortcuts and folders. There's plenty of ways to not use the previously known as Metro UI. You're also able to customize the UI to groups things how you want. It's really nothing more than a glorified start menu without all folder trees.
You stick with your Win7 as there really is no reason to upgrade if you're happy with it - but when it's no longer compatible with games, are you going to switch to a console, Linux or just stop gaming?

Xbox live is not a part of the interface. What lock ins are you talking about? I can run anything and everything I ran on Win7 in Win8. The Metro UI is a replacement for the Start menu. Other than that it's just a better tuned version of Win7 with some slight differences in how things look.
Again, more hyperbole and factually incorrect information from someone who hasn't even tried it.

its more likely that win8 wouldnt be compatable with games, saying that you need it because win 7 isnt compatable is complete BS, and that UI that MS have dumped on win 8 is terrible, the most likely scenario is that games developers won't support win8, something that is already occuring btw, developers are looking at windows 8 and not liking what their seeing, it might be okay for apps but, it lacks a lot of things that Win 7 has, and ease of use is probably at the top of the list, people don't want to learn to work around these things, they just want it to work, not an OS that looks more like it belongs on a smart phone. microsoft have gambled big time on win 8, and its a gamble their going to lose, because anyone with win 7 or even XP will not be satisfied with what win 8 offers. which frankly, isnt much.
It kind of sounds like some of the nay-sayers don't realize you don't have to use the tablet inspired interface. You can switch to the desktop mode that you're used to seeing in previous versions of Windows. So if that's the only reason that's making you have some strange undying hate of Windows 8 you might want to take another look.
From the various reviews I've seen it sounds like there is a negligible performance difference between the two in most tests. I'm willing to bet that game performance will be a little better than Windows 7 though when drivers are fully matured.
I might buy it at $40 simply so I don't decide I want it later down the road and have to pay $120 or whatever. I'm happy with Windows 7, but I like shiny new toys and this new toy might perform better than the old toy eventually so why not. Of course I'll wait til a day or two before the price goes from $40 to full price just in case there's some apocalypse released because of Windows 8.

If I see real proof that using Win 8 over 7 gives more performance for games, I would upgrade in no time. Until then, I leave it for tablet users.

win8 is the biggest failure along vista
win7 ftw
Id be interested in seeing this.
Im gonna check youtube for a gaming comparison between 7 and 8, if it aint their someone should make one
