But not just any mmo.. I have been going insane for the past few years as I have repeatedly tried and searched for new and different games... Constantly disappointed by whats been offered. So let me describe to you, what I am looking for.. And hopefully you know of something like it.
P.S looking for a free game here.
1. the game has to have rare, unique loot.. And lots of it. An example: There were custom rpg maps on the game warcraft 3, where you could make loot tables and design the percentages of drops to your liking.. So if I were to kill this 1 enemy many many times, I would find some different loot, but sometimes, I would find a really unique piece that made an enormous impact, such as a ring of regeneration + 2, and your max hp at that level is like 50... So in essence, the game should have loot that can drastically change the course of battle. I also want the loot to be highly varied, such as Ultima Onlines loot: You could find 100 different swords of the same type.. But its stats would hardly ever be the same. And you could find 100 different unique/rare iron short swords.. and those as well, would be highly varied in stats, in other words, a randomization of stats on the loot. And in other words, when I kill a boss, I want the chance to find something that makes my jaw drop.
2. Dungeons. Everyone knows when you want to find special goodies, you have to enter a dungeon to get them. Whether their dropped from the normal things inside, or the boss, your always more likely to find something unique inside a dungeon.. Beacuse everything in a dungeon is typically stronger than the stuff on the outside around the dungeon. However, I would prefer a dungeon that changes depending on party size.. So that your not -required- to have other people in order to complete said dungeon.. Because I hate games that force me join other people, sometimes I want to be alone, and it should accomadate for that.. Perhaps it would include bonuses if you had other people, such as better chances of finding loot, or money, or etc.
3. Optional: taming... I have been spoiled by ultima onlines taming system, and am shocked to all hell that I have never found any other game with a taming system as great as that game... Sure some games have "summoners" or "beast masters" but those are cheap imitations compared to the powerful system of taming that ultima online has created. I would love to find a game with taming like ultima online.
4. optional: Building. I have always loved games that allow you to build things.. And the deeper the customization, the better. Personally I am looking forward to Salem, and have tried Wurm and Minecraft... Hated Wurm however. (RANT START) 1 friggen hour just to chip away a single rock? Nonsense! And minecraft... I loved minecraft, until I realized it has about as much content as a game in alpha... Minecraft would be an amazing game, except it has many many flaws. 1. It has 0 challenge. Even on supposed "hardcore" mode, the challenge is 0. You know how you can win in a second? Dig 2 block hole, cover top of hole. Congrats, you can live forever. Minecraft would be a good game if it focused wayyy more on rpg elements than creative elements. And sure there are tons of dif blocks... All without purpose though. Oh goody, I can create an enormous castle or mansion... And fill it with chests and furnaces and 1 crafting table... So pretty much I see minecraft as being no more than a paint program with pre-designed blocks instead of a pencil tool.. (RANT END) Sorry back on topic... I like games that allow you to build things, especially if those buildings serve a purpose. Personally I have often dreamed about a sandbox mmorpg like skyrim, mixed with mechanics from games like warcraft 3, only you are in first person as your main character. You go around collecting resources, and then start building your base, and suddenly you can create units who can do various tasks such as scavenging for more materials, guarding certain areas, etc.. But its a sandbox world, not instanced game combat... Its just.. Extremely complex XD. House systems are ok... but their dull in comparison to the extent of building that I would want. Another comparison would be, any mmo combined with games like LoL or DOTA except your building all those buildings, but again, sandbox mmo, not small instance battles where there are "matches"
As for the rest of the options.. Here are some things I do enjoy. PvP, PvE, full-loot on death (meaning when you die, you lose all your items, whether it be against a player or npc, you still drop your stuff, and other ppl can pick it up.) The game could be 3d, 2d, 8bit, download or browser, flash or unity3d I dont care... Just so long as it has some of the stuff mentioned above.
Features the game must NEVER have: 1. Wait times: Pretty much your standard facebook theme.. Do so many actions and then pay us to more, or wait until tommarow.. I dislike Stamina games also: Ie: Systems which force you to stop doing something through some means of limitation: HunterBlade has such a limitation.
and I believe this may help... A list of games I remember I hate, and why: (only 8 listed... Why? Because listing over 100-200+ games would make a very long thread, just know that if it was ever pay to play, I have played it, and have hated it.)
1. WoW: The grind became highly noticeable.. It literally felt like a chore. Hurray, kill these spiders 1000 times to level up... Which happen to drop the same damn stuff all the time, and on rare occations drop something slightly better, but nothing to make your jaw drop or make the combat go any bit faster at all... Oh, and this was at level 20 or 30. Plus their raids were stupid as hell. "your telling me I NEED a group of people AND I have to wait for a longggg time to find one? Screw you blizard."
2. Everquest 2: Not sure why I stopped playing actually.. I think it had the same reasons as above, don't remember.. The card game inside the game was quite fun though...
3. Everquest 1: annoying.... Thats all I can say.
4. Final Fantasy Online: This game was fun for a time... The combat was quite refreshing, but the down time was longgggg. And also if you ever wanted to survive past level 10 or 20, you HAD to be in a party of people, which usually required a healer, I remember wait times of 1 or more hours, and that was if you got invited to a party...
5. Dungeons And Dragons online: I,ll be truthful here... I didn't give this much of a go. Played through the tutorial and then uninstalled. Why? Because it seemed like a game that would not have uber loot, fairly certain you would end up having to party to play, and the reason for that was because loot would not have much of an impact on combat as Id like.. Sure it has dungeons, but I expect bosses to drop me Flaming Sword Of Vampiric Lifestealing that deals 1d8 extra fire, and returns 15% of damage you dealt back to you as life AND you can further improve it with upgrades, not +2 sword which adds 2 more damage... So sure I don't want to stroll through the game and insta win... But I don't want to be forced to party, have a hard as hell long battle, and end up finding an item which makes almost 0% difference on my future fights.
6. Diablo 3: After 2-3 days I hit 53 (cap is 60) and I realized... Why am I playing this? And why would anyone auction off level 60 items, let alone for cash? Theres no freakin point to this game but getting to the end level. End game content? Its the same damn crap you been through only harder, and the only reason that crap exists is so you can level up and get loot... So once you hit 60, who the hell cares if you can find better items? Theres no end game content... When pvp comes out? Hahaha... In other words, their end game content is like league of legends only there are no units, and you have been grinding for months for gear, while league matches take like 20-30 minutes to finish... Wish I never bought this game, its as pointless as watching paint dry.. Sure its got alot of loot... But thats all its got.
7. Runescape: Enjoyed this game back when Rune was the best you could get. Not sure why I enjoyed it, but I did... Not anymore though. And yes I tried the new runescape, played a couple weeks, got bored.
8. dc universe and other superhero games...: Great customization... Too bad the loot is absolute crap, on all of them.
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_
And please, do not be one of those people that says: "Well, I don't know about anything like that, but, This game...." because I have googled for particular types of games before, and you know what the majority of the answers are? I can categorize them into 2 groups actually.
1. Fanatics who are hooked on a dieing game and are desperatly trying to get more people to come in by going into Looking For threads and spamming crap like "You should try this game! *link* Its really fun! I love it! You would love it! Blah blah blah Lookatmebeingdesperate"
2. People similar to group 1, except they want to mention their game because they find it fun and for some reason don't understand the concept of "Looking for" threads... Example: I saw someone looking for a monster rancher online mmo. Do you know what the majority of the answers were? Person 1: Try runescape! Person 2: Try WoW! Person 3: Yes, try runescape! .... How the hell are you going to tell me, or even TRY to explain to me your reasoning as to how you can consider Monster Rancher Online type mmo, to be EVEN REMOTELY SIMILAR to those two games.... Anyways....
I have tried many many many games... Both f2p and p2p, and have not once found a good one... I have found ones with good features... But they lacked heavily in the others.... A few good examples. Minecraft, focused too little on rpg elements and wayyyy to much effort into creative. Had they added elements from wurm and focused a bit more on the rpg aspect, I believe it would have made a great game... And spore... Spore was actually good... But was too simplistic. It focused primarily on kids games.. If spore was made for adults, it would have been crazy good... More complexities... More possibilities... They may have even branched it out into a mmo.. But none of that happened. (p.s tried eve online, Im not talking about complexities like that... Thats annoying as all hell.)
And as I try more and more games... I grow more depressed, as I realize the more I try... The more they all melt together.. 1000s of different titles, all the same game with slightly different art.
Comments
tried conan online?
Yes. Also tried most of aeria games, gpotato, ijji... sure there are other companies I failed to mention.
edit: Think of it this way, If the game has ever been mentioned on top 10 lists, or featured as "this years favorite" I have played it.
well sorry bro, your a mmo burnout. take a vacation and come back to the games later
and remember , no game can be a substitute for life.
sorry if that sounded cheezy, im very tired.
Try mortal online when the next expansion comes out.
I didn't notice you mentioning that you tried Eve Online. Have you given that a spin, and not just the free trial?
Where's the any key?
I tried eve, thought it might be a decent game.... But complex space combat is not a friend to me. (plus im near broke now, so im lookin for f2p games mainly.)
edit: hmm.. Can anyone recommend any mmorpgs that feature vampiric type abilities for a certain class or lifesteal weapons? (not forsakken tho.. I hate games that allow you to level up offline, or level up with ingame bots. Hate em >_<.)
Or perhaps list games with tons of unique loot? Ie: games people complain about not being about skill, but being about whos got the better gear? Cause I love those games. (but not games like diablo... those have no point.)
The problem with that is you'd be hard-pressed to find an F2P one where that kind of gear isn't just outright bought.
Maybe LotRO?... though, you have to pay for certain endgame adventure packs to even find it. Like the mines of Moria stuff. DDO is just about up that same river as well. You should perhaps try Vindictus, the gear is extremely hard to produce now that you can only take up 1-2 craft skills, and the mats are really hard to come by. Fun game too... just shallow in the areas that most people would agree "makes an MMO what it is".
Uncharted Waters Online as well. The really badass stuff is crazy hard to come by, but it's all player-crafted. Though, I guess what you want is unique gear gained via raiding... but then I have to ask - when has that kind of gear *ever* been unique like that, in any game, ever? Everyone that plays long enough ends up in the same outfit. You know this...

Now Playing: Skyrim, Wurm Online, Tropico 4
Waiting On: GW2, TSW, Archeage, The Rapture
Assuming you've tried almost everything from mainstream to obscure, it's sort of hard to suggest anything meaningful. You've probably already played them.
One with a companion system that's very unlike most is a Japanese MMO known as Mega Ten (Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine). I mention it because it's far off the beaten path in terms of western players, so you might not have seen it.
The companion system consists of contracting with demons and then fusing them with other demons to produce variants. Gameplay is sort of storyline, sort of quest arcs, sort of grindy, and has group dungeons. The art style is bizzare. The setting is post apocolyptic Japan. From the looks of it, the budget was moderate but quality of execution is exceptionally good... just a bit rough around the edges graphically but not bad for a game a few years old.
It was published by Aeria, but has been taken over by Atlus who is publisher for the rest of the SMT games.
Hope this is helpful, I tried :-)
edit: Oh, and it is free to play. I have 2 mid-level characters and had no trouble avoiding the item shop.
WARNING: Don't roll a character and delete it. You lose the character slot and it costs cash to replace it.
Like a lot of us you're experiencing an MMO burnout.
Best thing to do now is avoid MMO's until you've bought, played and completed this list of single player games.
Mass Effect 1/2/3
Dragon Age 1/2
Darksiders
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
Kingdoms of Amular
Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
Trine 1/2
Diablo 3
I completed all of these in the last 3 months and avoided MMO's as much as possible (except my weekly cap for WoW Arena points with my friend)
I then played The Secret World and GW2 beta and I really enjoyed them, it was refreshing to be playing MMO's again, going to buy both of them. I also enjoyed Tera, and will probably buy it when it's cheaper. I also liked The Old Republic (Don't bash me please?)
Point is, I would have played these MMO's and been overly critical and not enjoyed them, but the single player games cured me of my burnout and I can enjoy MMO's again! Wheyyyyyy
It might be expensive, but it's worth it, play none MMO's for 2-3 months and you'll enjoy MMO's again afterward
