I've been reading post here and at eve's website about the game. And i admit,i've been playing only 3 months or so.It is a great game.So i have to post my feelings about pvp in eve.
If you are new to this game and don't want to do pvp,you do not have to.You can even find a non pvp corp. to join if you want to.The pvper's that post here and at the website (some of them) are just gankers looking for newbies to start pvp before they are ready for it.
Most of the long time eve players gave up pvp, because eve is more than that.Look at it this way,if eve was only about pvp who would be the builders in the game? And some of these pvp players will say they build. Some may but not all.
The game eve needs players that build because it is a game that will not work without them.So if you want to pvp you can,and its fun(i've done it) if not, that is ok too.I post this because i want this game to bring in anyone that wants to try it.Be it pvp or not.Eve is a game where you can do anything you want to.
Not many mmorpg can even say that.I would say before joining any game, checkout the games website and read first. You wil learn more about the game than you would here. Then decide if its for you or not.But this is a fact...You do not have to do pvp if you do not want to.And you still can become one of the most powerful players in the game,Its that deep.

Well, my corp is part of the XETIC Alliance, the largest alliance in the game. Currently we're at war with about 6-7 other corps and combat takes place daily in Empire space. We have members actively patrolling the more-visited systems and keep us up to date as to which ones to avoid. Although sometimes corp wars are unavoidable, it is pretty easy to stay out of it if you don't want to.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, PvP in EVE Online is way, way overstated. Note: this information may be completely wrong as I left Eve Oct 03. Numero Uno, PvP only takes place in low sec space due to CONCORD (Ha!) and more importantly, gate guns. Usually, PvP takes place in low sec space and/or contested space and on certain trade routes.
Second, CCP have provided numerous aids to allow one to plot their route and to determine just how dangerous a particular route may be. You have the 3d map that can display the frequency of ships destroyed, pods destroyed, etc in the last 24 hours. The same sectors, in the same contested areas of space always used to appear.
Thirdly, EVE is a social game. There are plenty of small alliances who have all entered into various non-aggression pacts and control regions of space, ensuring that non-aligned players, neutral players and solo players (who are not pirates) can access certain regions of space.
Fourthly, insurance, insurance and insurance. Yes, you lose your ship load if your ship is recycled into space dust, but insurance helps cover the majority of the cost. EVE's death penalty is harsh but is not as harsh as people make out - provided that you make allowances for an untimely death. If you want to engage in huge PvP battles, then it will get expensive and mighty costly replacing all those ships - hence, you need to find yourself a Corporation.
Fifth, just because you can afford a certain ship class does NOT mean you ought to fly one! Back during my time, it never failed to amuse players on the official forum when someone used to bitch and whine because their shiny new Battleship got converted into space-dust 5 minutes after leaving the space station. Time taken to develop the skills to fly a Battleship: 3 months, Cost of Battleship: 85 million ISK. Having your Battleship blown to smithereens 5 minutes after leaving the space station: Priceless.
Eve is a deep, complex game which forces players to actually engage their brain. It is a cold, harsh universe that allows players to go out into the frontier and make their fortune and defend it as best they can. If D'n'L doesn't live up to my expectations, I'll return to EVE - this time, I'll participate much more in the game than when I first played. Solo play is useful to get acclimatized to the game, but the game only begins to unfold when you join a Corporation and really begin to play the game.

Hi Riotgirl, and i agree with your thoughts on the game.Joining a corp.should be a very carefull thing,as you want to make sure that corp.fits you play style.I aways ask if they have a website. That helps you to get to know what they do.
Hi Ranma13,7 corp wars at once would suck to me.I have a friend who joined a corp.that started when he played earth&beyond. So he went with his old corp.to eve,And now he hates it because all they do is war.Talk about wasting your game time.He can't go anywhere without being chased or blown up.
He was into the pvp thing for awhile but since the new update,he wants to try the missions out as the reward is better for doing them.I watched him try to get to his agent 9 jumps away.He did'nt get 2 jumps before he got blown up.And it was in 1.0 space too.
That corp.is in 8 wars atm.He keeps asking me to join them.I just laugh at him.Misery wants company.
I really don't see why everyone gives such a bad wrap to the pvp in EVE. I'm sorry (and this is for all you ship builders out there as well as the loads of miners) but, the pvp system in EVE is what keeps your wallet full. If there was never any major fleet operations that took place and no one ever lost a battleship (except for the odd person who messed up on a Level 4 agent mission) , there would be no one left to buy all the ships on the market. And since the market on EVE is entirely player based, this would end up destroying the game for all the newbies out there who mine while they train up their learning skills.
People mine, sell the minerals to manufactuers who then sell their ships to people who engage in frequent conflicts. If there wasen't any fighting going on and everyone could go to 0.0 space whenever they wanted to so that they can stock up on all the mega/zyd and morphite they wanted, everyone would just end up building their own ships and that would kinda really suck for a game that is based on having a player run economy, don't ya think ?
As for people trying to rush others into pvp'ing too early, why not ? I don't know if anyone's taken a look lately but about 90% of the battles that take place (yes, even the major fleet ops) are in frigates. Not only interceptors and assault ships either, I mean, basic frigates and destroyers. Ships that cost a few hundred thousand ISK to replace if all goes wrong and take only a few days of training to use effectively.

As has been said before and will be said again:
Before you join a player-run corp, ask if they are at war.
A corp that I am (which is in the XETIC Alliance) had a member who joined up, not knowing we were at war. He ended up losing 4 industrial ships (think hauler or freighter) in just a couple of days.
Consider yourself warned.

Of all the reasons to get a credit card, Red vs. Blue is one of the best.
I don't think we are giving it a bad wrap. What i don't like is pvper's saying its the best thing about the game. And you make a point, but you also make mine.Someone has to build all that stuff you guys blow up.And come on about 90% of pvp being done in frigs. Those frigs are being blown up by bigger better ships.
These guys blow up people in shuttles for crying out loud.It happen to my friend at a gate. What can you get by blowing up a shuttle? And newbies don't have the skills. If someone is pvping in a frig and also has the skills to fly a battleship.Who's going to win,the newbie or the battleship guy?
Ostensibly they do that because they assume you are a spy alt if you are flying in a shuttle.
I don't have an issue with the people who are guarding the gates to alliance space. If they want to spend their time in EVE doing that, fine for them.
I also don't knock the folks who focus on the PVP aspects of EVE -- whatever you fund fun is fine. I am mostly on the other end of the game -- builder and trader, and I make just about as much money trading as I do building, and that's all pretty much in Empire space.
As for frigates, if you are PvPing and you have good skills, a frigate is a great ship to have because of the speed and maneuverability. Sure it's easy to blow up, but equipped with a MWD it can be hard to target and to the extent the frigate is a missile boat, this can be an issue. Take three Kestrels together with MWDs and spamming missiles they can take down a cruiser no problem. But those frigate pilots aren't folks with 100,000 skill points, they have millions of skill points, and are therefore that much more adept when flying a "throw-away" cheap frigate.
Of course it's even better in an interceptor, but they're not exactly "throw-away", so you want to be more careful what you do with them
