Need help, desktop problems !!!

The Issues: All video related, My computer does not recognize that I run on direct x 11, always utilizes 9 in games, every game I play seems to have degraded graphics, especially in the antialiasing category ( lots of jaggies that I know shouldnt be there).  In addition, there has always been an awkward haze of lines in the backround of my screen, gets extremely annoying after time.  My comp has also been suffering from random crashes lately as well.

Things I have already tried: Replacing the video card, Replacing the monitor, replacing the power supply, clean updated all drivers, and checked for faulty cables.

As one can see I've been going to hell and back to try and solve these, the only things that I can possibly think of that I can do to fix this are replace the RAM or do a clean install of windows, may be corrupt?  Im not sure what the problem could possibly be and would like to get some input from someone of greater knowledge.  Any help is appreciated!!

    Can you post a screenshot?

If the random effects don't show up in screenshots that's a big clue too.

Also - make sure you're not overclocking anything, even a little bit.

Sounds like a motherboard fault between the video card & the CPU.

Post your entire specs please. It sounds like your videocard is being throttled severely by your motherboard either from damage or incompatibility issues.

Well I have already taken screenshots, and they dont show up on it because its almost like the haze comes from a back area of the screen.  Oh and I am not overclocking.

Motherboard is most likely the issue. Any board with less than 60% 5eggs on newegg is to be suspicious of. Less than 50% 5eggs easily accounts for amateurs messing up and posting a bad review. Your board, got a 31% out of 100 something reviews.

I'd look into testing your parts with a different motherboard and see how that goes my friend.

Not sure on your budget so I'll just list a couple:

    Mobo #1 ~ ($240)

    Mobo #2 ~ ($122)

    Mobo #3 ~ ($190)

I'd probably buy #3 considering it has 2 PCI slots (no idea why #1 has none, but 2 PCI 3.0 slots) and uses the same awesome Bios was #1. For whatever reason #1 doesn't have normal PCI slots, but has won a couple awards already. I assume you can just use the extra PCI 3.0 slot as a normal PCI slot.

I say this because I use a high quality soundcard for gaming, and that requires a PCI slot.

How about if you post the rest of your specs, too?

And if you've overclocked your processor and are having problems, the first thing to try is undoing the overclock.  It probably isn't the source of your problems, but it's still a simple first step.

Your symptoms sound to me like a video driver issue is most likely, or possibly a monitor issue.

If a game is coded as DirectX 9.0c, then that's the code path that the game will use on your computer, even if you've got DirectX 11 hardware.

Well like I said I've done a clean install of my latest drivers, everything is up to date and I also Replaced my monitor, so that eliminates both of those options.  I have never once overclocked either and I ensured that the game could utilize dx11 but it doesnt recognize it.

If you're running a Core i7-2600K at 3901 MHz, then that's a substantial overclock right there.  The stock speed is 3.4 GHz, and even the normal turbo boost only goes up to 3.8 GHz.

And again, how about if you post the rest of your system specs?  You do have a power supply, don't you?  A case?  An optical drive?  A monitor?  There's a lot of stuff that you're not posting.  Some of it won't be relevant, but if you knew exactly what was relevant to your problem and what wasn't, then you wouldn't need to ask here.  So don't try to guess what is relevant and just post everything.

I know others brought to your attention the reviews of others having issues with your model of mobo, but have you checked to see if any bios updates for your motherboard yet, if so it may be worth a try. Update the bios and go through it as a last resort before considering a new motherboard. With the troubleshooting you've done and having same results with other parts,it can only point to the motherboard  & its bios as others have suggest too.

  • stragen001stragen001 Member UncommonPosts: 1,720

The "haze" sounds like backlight bleeding from your monitor, especially so since it doesnt show up on screenshots. Lots of LCD and even some LED monitors have problems with backlight bleeding. Try turning the brightness on your monitor down and if the haze gets less, thats your problem.

The glitches you are talking about sound like artifacts generated from on overclocked and/or overheating CPU or graphics card.

Someone above said that you are overclocking your processor substantially. Also, is your RAM rated for 1600mhz, or is that being overclocked too? Get rid of any overclocks on your CPU, graphics card or RAM and see if the artifacts and crashing go away. If they do, thats your problem. You can probably get away with overlocking, as long as you have good cooling, but not as much as you are at the moment.

You can also look in the event viewer(start->run->eventvwr.exe ->windows logs->system) on your computer after a crash to see what the cause is. I suspect it might be an overheating CPU or GPU causing shutdown

P.S. Listen to Quizzical, he knows his stuff

If the hazy/streaks don't show up in screenshots, then it's more than likely a problem with the monitor or cable. I know you said you changed these out, but screenshot takes directly from the framebuffer - which means that your computer is working right all the way up to the point where it puts the signal out to the monitor.

The choice to use DX11 is up to the game - each game has it's own setting to toggle between DX11, DX10 and/or DX9. It isn't automatic by any means (at least in most games).

As for the overclocking I never manually overclocked it but it did seem like the cores were OC'd when I went into easy tune.  So I set it back to default and now it says that its at 1600mhz....so confused. ( hits head against wall).

Get a temperature monitoring program to make sure that the temps on your CPU and GPU are not getting too high when you are gaming.

Have you checked the event viewer after the computer crashes as I suggested previously? Look for red items.

As for the overclocking I never manually overclocked it but it did seem like the cores were OC'd when I went into easy tune.  So I set it back to default and now it says that its at 1600mhz....so confused. ( hits head against wall).

Edit: Tried setting clock back to default for 2nd time, worked and is at 3.4 mhz.  Also updated BIOS, but did not help to solve any issues.

Get a temperature monitoring program to make sure that the temps on your CPU and GPU are not getting too high when you are gaming.

Have you checked the event viewer after the computer crashes as I suggested previously? Look for red items.

temperature is always good, will check viewer

A primary consideration of mine.  Im left with the impression that this problem is being caused my RAM, the motherboard, or a corrupt windows install.
