Casual Game for 2

potacopotaco Member Posts: 82

So, my friend and I are looking for a somewhat simple game that's a little more persistant than the games we've played together so far:

- Just to give some background... We've played non-MMO games like Yahoo Pool, iSketch, etc. We have messed around with Second Life a little, but there's not much of a "game" there. I have experience with just about every pay-to-play MMO there is, while he isn't even really comfortable with WASD yet (or the concept of a standard MMO). His "favorite" game is probably GTA4 for PS3.

- Doesn't have to be an MMO (and probably shouldn't be one of the standard MMOs like WoW, RIFT, etc)

- Doesn't have to have a real client... browser-based would be easier

- Should be able to play "together" for almost the entire game (being part of a bigger group is fine, but being forced to solo a bunch of stuff isn't)

- On the other hand, having something to do while the other player is gone would be nice, too

- Need to be able to interact easily (between each other, for sure)

- Messing with people is fun (in a non-harassing way), so that would be a big bonus

- Controls should be pretty simple (since he doesn't play any "real" PC games)

- Should have some kind of graphical interface (not text-based)

- Need to be able to hop in and out of the game pretty quickly without a lot of downtime

- Need to be able to play in relatively short sessions (30 min)

- Not one of those "Kings of Chaos-esque, build an army, attack, defend yourself" games because those are super boring

I'm not sure if anyone has any ideas, but I'm not too familiar with browser games, so I thought I'd ask here.... Thanks in advance!

You could try Spiral Knights.  If you can never play for more than 30 minutes at a time, that could be a problem.  But if you just want something to do in 30 minutes because sometimes that's all you have, while other times you have an hour or two, Spiral Knights will suit you just fine.

It's very gamepad-friendly, to the degree that a gamepad is actually an advantage over keyboard+mouse.  So you won't need a page of notes to keep track of which controls are mapped to what.

You can jump into the group of anyone on your friends list anytime you want and join wherever the group is, so long as the group isn't full or fighting a boss, and hasn't disabled the "allow friends to join" option.  So you could be doing whatever and in the middle of some battle and then your friend logs in and jumps right in and joins you in the middle of battle.

I agree with Quizzical, my wife and I play Spiral Knights together, she is not familiar with MMOs or PC Gaming and I am. We both enjoy the controls, the easy grouping and the difficulty of the game. We haven't gotten too far in, but its F2P with options to pay for more "energy" which is used to go into dungeons (so limited on the number of dungeons you can do in a day with F2P).

Well then, for casual games I would suggest...

Trickster Online- Its cute, its fun and its casual. There are four classes to choose from, each class has two advancements, and the final one has two choices.

You have the options of four classes, known as types. Power- Physical DD, Sense- Usually Ranged DD, Magic...Magic DD, Charm- Tank, but makes a good Phys DD as well.

Male and Female characters of the same class have slight variations in the second and third classes. A Male power type is different from female, but...a male can learn the skills of a female second job if they pick the hybrid option as their third class change (if that made any sense...)

A big bonus to having someone to play with is that, when you party your experience rate actually increases, and if you can get one of each type, you get double the exp.

Mabinogi- Two is golden for this game as well. You two may struggle a little in the beginning, but once you hit total level 100 (it will happen in under a week, I'm sure of that) you can easily do basic level shadow missions, the game is twitch based and there are no classes, only styles of fighting: Melee, Ranged, Magic and, Alchemy. All of which can be mixed and matched with.

There is also a rebirthing system which allows you to be reborn as a level 1 (keeping all skill upgrades and what not) every time you become the age of 20. (One year gained each week) So ideally you can rebirth to age 17 and then rebirth again the following three weeks.

These two games me and my friend were able to play pretty casually, the latter more so. We would hop on, do the daily shadow missions (2x XP/Gold) and then hop off.

I wish you two luck in your endeavors ^^

Thanks for the replies so far!

Spiral Knights - Will have to give this one some consideration... I tried it out for a few minutes when it first came out, but am not really familiar with it.

Trickster Online/Mabinogi - Neither of us are into the "anime" look, so that's a negative. I've played Mabinogi a little bit, but the art style and awkward combat ended up being too much for me. It's also more quest-oriented (and less "pick up and play for a few minutes") than I'm really looking for.

Anyone have any other ideas? Maybe non-MMO?

Guild Wars 1.  It has a reputation for being great for playing with 1 or 2 friends, is pretty cheap, is a lot easier to play than many MMOs, and it can be pretty fun to just do missions and go through the game.  You don't really have to worry about leveling either.

You might like it, or you might not (it isn't actually an MMO btw).

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

Quake 2 co-op and Rainbow 6(the original) co-op is always a huge blast.
