Was going to play but....

ZaltarkZaltark Member UncommonPosts: 437

So I was considering this game, wanted to try out the trial. I read the little bit of forum speak here at MMORPG.com, went to thier main web forums and also tried this other site at sandboxer.org Amidst alot of favorable reviews/talk, I come across stuff like this: http://sandboxer.org/?p=668

First thing logically comes to my mind is: If the GMs running the game have broken/glitchy tools... How can they do anything properly?

That plus accusations of corruption (at the account being hacked),  I wonder if I should even consider a 14day trial. Everyone keeps saying "Wait for the expansion" I wonder how well that will actually be implemented. Now I admit Im not expert on Mortal Online, never played it. But from the little bit of research Ive done so far, my mind is telling me to stay away. Just an average MMOs thoughts. The biggest plusses I see to this is that its apparently easier on new players than DarkFall, and DarkFall says its going to wipe. Just curious for a sandbox.

    Simple, they don't.

For me personally I have to weigh these 2 factors (again, this is my opinion, and therefore cannot be disputed much)

Factor #1- MO is not typical from other MMO's. The realism of the game is unmatched in terms of needing to eat, sleep, walk your horse over mountains, etc. The first person view only enhances the realism bringing immersion a step further as you hear your character breathing heavy as your stamina runs low. Your screen view periphriallly reduces when your wearing a helmet as it would in RL. The crafting/resource system is very nice mirroring several other sandboxes in terms of complexity especially with metal refining, potion-making, fishing, etc. The skill point system having a cap is a good thing where you need to pick your role in the world.  The  open-world is a plus and the graphics for a sandbox game are at the top of the list.

Factor #2-Star Vault has a habit of over-promising and under-delivering as you'll hear of concepts such as 'placeholders' being added to the game for future updates. SV also doesnt have the tools to effectively monitor hacking to the level it needs to. In addition, SV is small so updates and fixes do not come fast. In addition the developers are not the best money can buy so their skills arent potential. However much slack you want to give the SV developers is up to you due to the game they are trying to make. The community is very competitive as the developers vision is primarily a pvp centered game. So, care-bears(which I include myself in, but I like to pvp every now and then) wishing for fluff-tools, and RP-tools may always be wanting more and trying to identify with E-peen strokers and 18 yr olds who in RL probably 'get off' on pranking people on the phone.

-If you can get over the first week of cluelessness and lack of a meaningful tutorial you will be eventually balancing those 2 factors above as you play possibly leading to a series of quitting and resubing as Factor 1 and 2 take precidence over the other. The expansion "Awakening" is looked at as a much needed expansion due to its PVE, Guard AI, and UI revamp.

Mortal is a very unique situation. The game itself has so many awesome features I wish Darkfall had (skill caps, eating, the crazy crafting system) but on the flipside the game is so broken and buggy because of the team not having any idea how to code a game properly (launcher was made by a fan of the game for them). I really really wish a company would buy out the studio and force them to actually produce a working product, because if this game was actually what it is supposed to be, it would be by far THE best MMO on the market right now. It's really too bad to be honest, I'll go back from time to time to check out the new updates but every time it just makes me depressed. Instead of fixing the recurring issues, they keep adding more and more features to the game, which would be great, if the issues were fixed first. They just keep building up this giant list of bugs, glitches and exploits, and it keeps falling down on people. Also GM's being corrupt doesn't help whatsoever.

Basically if you avoid the politics and take the updates and bugs as they come instead of as they're "announced" the game's pretty good.

If you die you dont lose much you can't replace. You always have your skills unless you're a murderer, and in general people are pretty helpful actually.

It's not that SV doesn't doesn't deliver on it's promises it's that it takes them FOREVER to deliver.  I the game was around for more than a year before we got TC.

However with that said Mortal Online is very playable in it's current state.  The guild wars really started making pvp more enjoyable with the territory control expansion.

Awakening is right around the corner, but really why wait?  Mortal Online is fun now, but don't take my word for it.  Just play the free trial.

Never trust a screenshot or a youtube video without a version stamp!

Its really useless asking in here, you should just play it now or wait till awakening. its up to you.

Let's put it this way: Whether you try it or not or whether you like the game's first impression or not, you won't be playing it in a month because it sucks.

That being said, I'd reconsider spending money on the game and on these wannabe devs. I'd advise you not to pay for this simply because MO has been dragging the sandbox genre in the mud since its creation. But play a trial or two if you want to experience the low end of game design and developer competence.

You will get almost entirely negative responses from everyone about this game on the mmorpg.com forums. Judging by the entirely unnecessary constant hate posts, the SV devs apparently murdered some of these peoples' grandmothers. Poor granny...

OP - you really have nothing to lose but time on the trial. Maybe you will like it, maybe not. Either way, it won't cost you anything.

Honestly, I think the responses will be the same from any gaming community except for official forums, where the majority of the posters are fans that been sticking with MO for this long and adapted themselves to the downsides.

this exaplains my personal feeling twords MO as well.

it is fun wile the novelty lasts, but the game it'self has many very serious flaws that the current devs either dont know how, or dont have the funds to fix. i still reccomend you trying the free trials just so you can experience the unique feeling this game has, but keep in mind that if you do end up buying it you will eventually come face to face with what most people here describe.

Well, you could fix all the errors and glitches, fix the fucked up world and AI and missing core features, but while it will be the CORRECT way to handle MO, it won't generate that shiny Expansion hype that will push up Account numbers for a short time.

It is not the question what the right way is. The question is: Is it POSSIBLE at all to fix and if yes, in which time? My guess is, they know that there is no solution to fix the game in time, so they try to do their best to keep sales as high as possible. And this is done by farting out the next "highest possible quality expansion that will fix everything and all (tm) forever!".

yes SV know exactly that they cant fix it, because fixing most of the serious issues would require a complete reworking of most of the core mechanics ('m talking about client detection, node lines, preformance, exploitability, etc). at that point is less work to start a new game from scratch.

the ONLY option they have to try keep people coming back or getting interested is adding stuff, but that wont fix anything, it will only compound problems. it's sad really because the potential of this game is undeniable.

Yeah I finally decided against it. Small dev team, imbalanced/glitchy gameplay/ corruption by staff/incomplete tools. Ima pass. I think Im just too old for MMOs now.

  • xDayxxDayx Member Posts: 712

Im 37 and dont see myself as too old.

A couple things keep me playing MO despite the bad I posted above...

    1) The game concept is awesome despite SV's shortcomings.

    2) What are my other options?  Playing another sandbox? Tried alot of them and DF and MO were the only ones that truly took me.  Playing a themepark? No thank you, been there done that. Quitting MMO's altogether? Doesnt work, I miss them when playing lifeless sRPG's.

    3) MO and sandboxes, in general, improve over time. Its the complete opposite of AAA mmo's where over time you know things are going to be 'streamlined'(as they call it) and more new-player friendly patches are added desguised as features. Whereas sandboxes generally come out with more tools and true additions to the game, etc.

But that's the whole point about all those hardcore MO players: It is not really the game itself that is THAT great, it's the lack of alternatives that let 'em continously play it despite all its failures.

I want to play a game like MO really bad, I would be a willing subscriber, but the QUALITY is beyond playable, I'm sorry for that. And I don't pay for the next buggy expansion, simple as that.

If SV will decide to ONLY fix all that mess in a coming expansion without adding any new stuff, well perhaps I would pay another month or two to support them, but I am absolutely not amused about their future plans (features above bugs), so... good luck SV.

OP Wait for archeage. That game will probably save sandbox.

You can own lands, naval warfare with other guilds, do epic ai npc boss fights, siege, build your own castles, houses.

You can harvest your materals dragings carts which mortal online doesnt have all archeage feature.MO  it has is sege and land fights exploits everywhere, buggs memory leaks. Its buggy client patch.

i understand that you are very excited for Archage but you are selling the pelt of the bear you haven't even seen yet.

we have truly no idea exactly how sandboxy it really is and from all the clips out there it looks a lot more like a sandpark then a full sandbox. again my personal interpretation but either way neither of us knows.

you are only hyping the hype.

FFS it's a free trial, don't be a sheep, make your own decision.

This is the worst place to ask as you will get polarised opinions many of which are unrealistic on both sides.

It is about you and what you want to do, not me or anyone else, does the setting and concept grab you, yes/no, do You have some time you are willing to spend to investigate yes/no -> decision

cant say ive noticed any memory leaks in a long time, fab and meduli are jsut extremely demanding for my pc but a memory leak is were performance gets progressively worse due to a memory leak but i have not experienced that.

there are 2 types of mmo, imitators and innovaters.

Correct, AA has never been promoted as the saviour of all sandbox games. It's a big-budget Korean themepark game with lots of interesting sandbox features and a very interactive world. Most likely they're aiming at the broadest possible audience, so it will not be "hardcore" and it will not be like EVE or UO; it will have a flavour of its own (possibly a very interesting flavour, who knows).

Too bad western sandbox fans are so starved for a good game that they'll jump on the hype train without any second thoughts - it's just a recipe for disappointment imo. I will surely play AA but I will not expect it to be the ultimate sandbox game.

No, they didn't kill my grandmother.  They took my pre-order box sale money and told me to F off.  From the very beginning they have been worthless in my opinion.  I will never open my wallet to these scumbags again.
