EA: The Big Engine that couldn't

No, they haven't.   They've lost their butts on all those.   APB has been a Day 1 failure and sold something like 40,000 copies before it went F2P.  Which it is currently failing at....  Warhammer was a failure and still hasn't come close to break-even.

SWTOR cost $250 million.   For EA to break even in its first year, they need to sell at least 4.5 million full-price copies AND have at least a million subscribers for at least a year.    That's just to cover direct development costs, patching and other current-status-of-game issues.

I doubt they have a million subscribers at this point.    I doubt they ever sell 4.5 million copies.    I doubt this game breaks even in five years since they're going to have to keep developing, bug-fixing and totaly revamp the engine.

Making money is one thing.   It's called 'gross receipts.'   Making a PROFIT is something else...

and that does not even take in to consideration LA's cut. Reminds me of that line from Goodfellas....

"Business bad? F*ck you, pay me. Oh, you had a fire? F*ck you, pay me. Place got hit by lightning, huh? F*ck you, pay me"

While there are some on this list i agree with, there is no way Gears of War is better than Mass Effect. Dragon Age is kind of a touchy subject because Origins was an amazing game, whereas 2 bombed horribly. To be honest though, you cant really compare Origins with any Elder scrolls because while they're both RPG's, they're both on the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to target crowd (DA:O being Themepark Story Driven, Elder Scrolls is Sandbox freedom). It would be more appropriate to compare it to The Witcher if you're going to do any comparing.

agreed it was a dodgy list at best, ME was a pretty good game, whereas GoW was mediocre bordering on rubbish..  tbh, if it wasnt for the DLC issue with ME3 it would be a certainty for me to be buying the game, i avoided buying any of the GoW games though just because they were that bad, probably because their console ports. i'll be waiting until ME3 hits steam on a bargain basement price day though.. unless they change their policy regarding day 1 dlc, because i for one will not be paying an extra £10 for something that should be in the game already. image

im sorry im not even going to view this topic as realistic.. by the simple fact you made the outlandish claim that cod beats BF...

im sorry COD is an arcade shooter i would compaire it to counter strike.. BF 1942 which has a larger game map then cod 1 has is better.

BF is more of a capture the flag style game play. which is loads differant then cod's typical run and gun.

iv played COD1-2 every newer cod is just rehashing the same stuff MW1 is the same as MW2... all they do is change the theater.. i mean how many modern shooters can you have with COD in the name all based on say iraq?? before they are cookie cutter??

BF1942 covers both east and western fronts of 1942-44 sure the newer BF is a cookie cutter of BF2 as to me frankly they are all modern shooters and really all the same..

sell of boxes means jack squat... mcdonalds sells millions of burgers but that doesnt mean its burger is better then one i make at home.. just because i dont sell millions of my burgers doesnt mean mine sucks O-o which you are clearly claiming when you compaire BF to cod..

while im not a fan of the newer BF as i personally just see it as repeating BF2 with better graphics :/ i really fail to see how COD is better then it??? does cod allow tanks/planes/cars/ships?? to be used all the time on the map?? o-o

while i disagree with you on the cod/bf stuff.. i do agree they pooped the shoot on CnC... they bent that baby over a chair and did soo many inconsevable innapporprate things to it, its shameful.

I guess its a safe bet that the day EA releases a game without copying a succesful other game is the day its raining beer, burgers and naked women.

EA would be the perfect chinese Copy&Paste Company. But chinese companies are at least starting to get some own stuff.

Thats happening if you let buisnessmen take over a gamecompany :) Its producing lots of money but its games are like that poor chicken sitting in the dark  small cage with 2000 other chickens.

SWTOR, which will always be second to WoW (If they're lucky) Not EAs fault but biowares I guess, its not a good game at all. I hate WOW but SWTOR is no where near as good as WOW

Origin, which will always be second to Steam EA trying to own everything yup one big bad idea.

Battlefield Heroes, which will always be second to Team Fortress 2 Its ok but so is TF2.. nothing special

Mass Effect, which will always be second to Gears of War I dont like gears of war, im also not a massive fan of mass effect but its better than gears of war.

Dragon Age which will always be second to Elder Scrolls Different tpes of games

Rock Band which will always be second to Guitar Hero Some things about rock band where a ton better the GH, but most people who own GH also own Rock Band so its not a loss really.

Battlefield will always be second to Call of Duty BF series is so much better than COD its just crazy.

Command and Conquer which will always be second to... Well everything since they've ruined it completely Very true.

    ***************

So no infact EA have some massive massive brands on their books and probally lead the way with some of the best games out there. I dont like EA tho adn they way they market things.. but it does not take away from what they have..

Some things that EA did really well:

    1. Produce sports games for consoles;

    2. Destroy Ultima Online and horde all of Richard Garriot's intellectual property, which he was admittedly stupid to sell to them, thus preventing any tangible possibility of resurrecting the Ultima lore;

    3. Oh, and I guess they crushed DAOC as well, but I think Mythic took care of that themselves with Trials of Atlantis and scroll farming/item leveling. Ug!

Trammies need to stop polluting the MMORPG landscape. They already have enough games in which to emote hugs and sell garbage by the banks.

EA is a slap in the face to gamers, just like most gaming companies these days.

I hate EA a lot.  Ask my friends, I'm constantly blaming them when games are bad/franchises ruined.  "When in doubt, blame EA" is my joking motto.  I completely agree with what you said about CnC(except for Generals) and Steam.

Apparently I don't hate EA enough.  Maybe my hate is more of a constant light hearted jokingly rib/laugh at the company and not really 'hate'.  I suppose I can't hate a company too much if I own a bunch of their games.

I have something to add to your list though, which is extremely relevant to my 'not quite good enough compared to some of you guys' hate. Madden.

Madden which will always be second to... ohshi...

We really need separate forums for every newly launched game. There can be the anti-<MMO> one and there can be the 'what general discussion should be' one. All the lamenting can happen together where each can find solace in like minded can't-move-on-ers leaving the rest of us to actually move forward and discuss meaningful and relevant topics.

EA reminds me of those companies that find smaller, but successful companies, buy them up, dissect them in an attempt to extract the talent and get their good reputations but this process usually destroys the smaller company.

We have seen it way back with what they did to Origin and now to Bioware.

I think the OP was hoping for lots of interweb "high fives" and back slapping off the back of the "s h one tee" storm around the SWTOR launch. What better way to get in with the "it" crowd, only it didn't work.

ME/GoW? errr ok. Yes total total copy... EA you LOSE!   not.

They only are good at producing other sports games for consoles when they have a 3rd party show them how to do it then stab said party in the back (ie bethesda helped on the first madden game)

But in reality, friends, I believe EA gives us a valuable lesson. A lesson that you can't buy your way to the top. Now, granted, EA is a VERY large corporation who has a considerable amount of wealth (Not so much any more since they've been losing millions each quarter for five years) however, it's becoming more and more obvious that EA will never be the leader in.. Well, ANYTHING.
EA will always sorta be... Second best. What do I mean? Well lets see what EA has tried to introduce in the past 5 years, starting with their newest flag ship campaign, the MMO.

But I'm sure you've noticed a pattern, and it isn't coincedence. EA's business stratagy has been to look at the top and copy the king. But unlike that one's who ARE at the top, EA lacks anything really "special"
Nothing is really special about SWTOR, or Origin, or Command and Conquer. Nothing about EA is very spectaculer aside from their ability to overhype... Well, fuckin EVERYTHING.

EA are coat tail riders, ladies and gentlemen. They can't innovate, they can't create anything really special, they're simply a bland, boring company who tries to square off with companies like Activision and end up getting embarresed, like when your big brother grabs your head as you try to swing at them.
That's what EA is... The little brother of everything successful.

    I feel better

Im almost 100% sure SWTOR will be third behind GW2 and WoW.

It could be worse... if they ended up being behind The Secret World... simply due to Funcom's track record and perception of their products.

I don't know about those game comparisons because I haven't played all of them, but I do know that EA has been raping the game industry for years.  Those of you old enough to remember names like Bullfrog, Westwood and Origin know what I'm talking about.  They strip mine small developers, ruthlessly apply ridiculous release schedules, force games out the door unfinished and then fold the developer, sucking up any IPs that are left and laying off everyone they can.  They are the biggest force of destruction we have.  And when they have a success, it's typically a derivative piece of crap with "broad appeal".

EA isn't good for anyone, least of all gamers.

BTW, thanks for that Kotaku link.  I hadn't seen that episode.

  • BunksBunks Member Posts: 960

Said this a dozen times now.  If EA were around the turn of the 20th century, they would have bought up all the small auto shops like Ford and Benz, scrapped their innovative ideas, ripped the engines out of the chassis, and put a horse in front of them.

We would still be shoveling the manuer off the streets if companies like this were around back then.

If you buy up all the innovative developers then you can spoon feed people garbage that much easier.

I do hate EA.  The worst big business publisher/dev-puppeteer in gaming.

Somehow they even manage to muck up The Sims, which only sells because of its history.  Sure it sells well, but they could have cashed in even bigger by pushing it forward, instead of dragging it down.  Or pulling nonsense like The Sims: Medieval, which was a decent idea, abysmally implemented, killing the chances of anything like that being tried again.

I hate them more for what they do to games like Spore though, a brilliant concept which they utterly destroyed with their typical dumbing down.  I still have my doubts about how little they had to do with the massive fail that was WAR.  Even APB, can't blame EA, except in their abysmal judgement for trying to publish it.  Then of course there's the aquisition of Bioware, and subsequent release of their worst games, ever - coincendence?  Yeah, sure..

Not sure about most of the OP's examples, but seems like there are so many examples of EA-branded mediocrity overtaking the industry.  I do think EA is just all around terrible at anything game related.  Other than marketting, and managing to stay on top just by throwing enough money around.. mostly on advertisement and the like, instead of actual game development.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
