Xcom Apocalypse best game ever

  • I think you could make an awesome FPS game out of the X-COM franchise. Take one of the old games, such as Enemy Unknown, and turn it into a tactical multiplayer coop shooter where you really have to work together with your team to win. Players can form their own agencies (clans) which can capture resources from the aliens, build bases and research alien technology. Add RPG elements to each agent (player) as they complete missions. Individual agents can either join agencies or work freelance to fill in empty spots on agency missions.

I actually think Syndicate is one of the best games ever made.

The new Syndicate is a slap in the face to the original.

I remember seeing and getting the first Xcom, not sure what I was really in store for, but hey it was one of the latest Pc games at the time, little did I know what a treat I was in for. I spent hours on that game. An age of true developer creativity and talent in immservie gameplay with the hardware they had to work with at the time.    The original syndicate was another.

Not a huge fan of Apocalypse. I prefer Terror from the Deep because even on Beginner setting it separates men from the boys ;]

I'm a huge fan of XCOM Apocalypse. It's sad when you dig around and read old interviews to see what could have been but was cut in order to get the game shipped. Most people know about the multiple pseudo-random alien dimensions which would have been fun (and made capturing the queen and getting Alien Gas much more useful) but there was also at some point a scenario generator and multiplayer using a hotseat turn based system or a real time LAN .. it's a real shame none of that made it into the final game.  :(
  • I just couldn't get into Apocalypse. I tried several times, but I could simply never get past the goofy graphics. Loved EU and TFTD though. The new XCOM is also great.

EDIT: Oh and I just realised this thread is a huge necro.

Goofy how so? The style was certainly different from the previous games, but I liked the almost SVGA like (remember when games used to boast about being SVGA?!?) polish applied to the characters and environments.

I think the key thing for me was to treat Apoc as almost a completely different game and ignore the 'XCOM' part for a while. I don't know about others, but I pretty much played exclusively in realtime rather than turnbased to - it was crazy just how different Apocalypse was depending on which mode you played.

  • Goofy in the sense that the aliens looked like muppets rather than aliens. The game really suffered from the lack of any art direction.

I don't know, I didn't notice that personally. I liked the variation in the aliens visually, I think there were some interesting ideas. Anthropods were ok, poppers were fun (if not freaking scary), megaspawns, micronoids, spitters etc etc. The psimorphs were a little silly though. I wasn't too fond of the UFO insides as some of the 'features' were somewhat bland but I thought the variation between buildings, alien dimension structures etc was really good
