Should I play LOTRO?

I'm not sure whether I should play or not, because my friends say it's really boring and it sucks, but I've seen gameplay and it seems really fun. Plus, it's F2P.

Have any of you guys ever played it? Is it good?

Some like it some dont. I like the game but  I think the best thing to do is d/load the game and play it then decide for yourself. Like you said, its F2P.

Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.

How would WE know?  We don't know you, or know what you like.  Just try it, since it's F2P.

Well the whole point of this thread was to ask about OTHER people's opinions, and to be honest, I don't want to just download a 20 GB game on my computer just to find out it sucks.

While I feel that's LotRO's best days are behind it, the game is still worth playing if you've never played it before. Despite my issues with the direction the game has gone since it went F2P and WB's buyout, the game still has a lot going for it, especially if you're a fan of the books.

It's a good game, try it.  If you don't like it just delte it.  It's not like you lost those 20gbs forever.

I agree with your friend, I got bored of the game right off the bat, it's just bland and boring.

That's just my feeling, some people seem to like it.

Ok thanks :) But why don't you like the "direction" it's going? What's happening to it?

I've played since one of the earlier closed betas.

I think it's a good game I I think it's a better game if you are interested in tolkien's books and lore.

My suggestion as far as your friend goes is to seriously look at the types of games he finds exciting. Especially mmo's. Then compare to what you find interesting.

From that compare it to lotro

The combat is not fast paced, there is a bit of reading of the quests, it isn't a fantasy world where you are going to find a lot of fantastical creatures. Lots of wolves and boars. However it's got orcs, goblins, giant lizard things, etc.

The world is very beautiful. The avatars are ok.

It's very story based. The pvp is not a focus. Magic isn't a huge focus either though the rune keepr sort of goes against the lore. Yet it is a pretty fun class.

If you have some patience and love immersion or want to pick up a musical instrument then this game might be for you.

Perhaps you can tell us of games you hated/loved? That could also help.

Dang, I'm getting so much answers with opposite opinions lol. I guess the only way to find out if it's good is just to download it myself. I was hoping most people would have the same opinion about the game.

Thanks for the reply! A lot of the things you say in this comment, though, make me not want to play it :P I mean, I NEVER read dialogue, and PvP is one of the main things to do in MMO's for me.

Some games I have loved are WoW (everyone has loved this game at one point) and RuneScape (don't judge) and didn't like SWTOR, or Guild Wars 1. (However, GW2 looks great)

I agree with this. I started playing back in 2007 in the games first year so ive seen how the game has changed.

But i have to say despite the changes the game is still great, if you can find a class you really enjoy.

The game is one of the better F2P games out there though being locked out of quest content in certain zones till you buy it at the turbine store can be a little annoying, subbing to the game removes this issue of limited content whilst levelling.

Its definately got one of the nicer communities of any MMO i have played, theres next to no competative nature or elitist 'pros' jumping about the main hub showing off.

Its crafting system is great, not unlike most mmo's but is more fun for some reason, can't quite place my finger on it.

Lore adds a lot of depth to the game if story is your thing this is the game for you, its based on the books not the films so don't expect to bump into Orlando Bloom or hear Sir Ian and Ellijah Wood any time soon.

All in all id say that if you don't like to pay for a game and want a game with good graphics, and excellent community and an overall enjoyable gaming experience id say give it a go. Id actually say its one of the more hardcore mmo's out there at the moment, its pve isn't that dumbed down (i can't speak for Isengard as i haven't played) but its definately fun and worth a go.

In my own experience im an MMO jumper as i find it difficult to find an MMO i can truly settle in, and the only two that have ever held my attention for months without me actively searching for the next world to jump into is World of Warcraft and LOTRO.

Thanks of the reply. I LOL'd at the Orlando Bloom and Elijah Wood part :D

From readig all your guys' comments, this game just doesn't really feel for me = I guess I'll just have to keep looking for a good MMO to play as SWTOR was a let down :(

EDIT: I think Guild Wars 2 looks very promising so I can't wait until that game comes out :) No monthly subscription fee either.

Kind of have to agree with your friends aswell.

I played for almost 3 months, did try to like it being an lotr fan but quit because it was just so dull.

Also really didn't like the fact that there was no character customization beyond what haircut to have.  There wasn't even a basic skill tree, when you leveled you just went and bought a new skill(the same one everybody else in your class had).  With the limited character models even used for the npc's you could easily get a group of chars exactly like yours getting a quest from an ai char exactly like yours.

As you've said you've already played wow it's unlikely lotro will hold any suprises for you, but only way to know if you'll like it is to try it.

Well, from all this negative feedback of the game, I don't even know if I want to try it. I just don't think it's worth it. The game didn't seem that intriguing to begin with anyway.

It was a game I looked forward to before its release and I also immediately started playing with some of my friends. If it wasnt based on LOTR I wouldnt have played a full 2 months I think. The things that made me stop playing were :

    - The art style for mobs and characters. I actually prefer gear that doesnt look over the top and LOTRO also does that. But they managed to chose a boring style for it. It doesnt happen often that I really dont like the character's artstyle in a game. The evil races just dont look intimidating enough in this game. Maybe that the LOTR movies spoiled it for me. Im not a purist if it comes to visualisation of books, so I can easily chose for the movies' artstyle. With orcs, trolls and goblins that actually look ugly and pure evil.

    - The zones. Beautifully made, but with a very artificial feel to it. Its filled to the brim with quest mobs so there is nothing to explore and only few exits, entrances to from zone. So I immediately recognise the obvious pattern in lvl ranges. That destroys immersion for me.

    - Wildlife. I know it is not about playing the main heroes, because the books' characters are the main heroes, but having to still kill deer and birds and those weird digging snout beasts at higher lvl is just silly and boring and destroys immersion for me.

    - Combat is uninspired. I never liked it. I played a lot of tabbased combat in many different MMO's, but this must have been one of the more boring ones. Im not talking about special fx, just that it is slow.

There is more stuff that Im not interested in (monsterplay, crafting) in this game, but I never made the mistake to have any expectations for it so it never really bothered me. Most of my negatives are about personal preference I know, so to me its just a game that is not my cup of tea.

I've said this many times and I'll say it again.. The only person who can tell you if a game is good or not is yourself. What may be crap to someone else may be the best game ever to you personally. Never let someone else pick your games for you. Try them for yourself as it is the only way for you to know if a game is right for you.

lol, well "not me". I got one character, created at launch to about lvl 36. Not to say there aren't good things about the game but it was never for me.

As far as your other additions then "no, the lotro is not for you".

You can still download it and try it though. But if you never read the quest text and pvp is important then it doesn't seem like it's right for you.

And I also never judge people on what games they like as that feels a bit shallow to me. otherwise I would have to submit to being judged by those that I know who think games are for kids.

    good luck.

I played it before it went F2P.  I enjoyed it a lot.  Great graphics and a good mature community.  I just lost interest after couple of years.  It's F2P now so what do you have to lose by trying it?

Its the only themepark MMO I will log into at this time.

If you do play, come to Crickhollow server, its like a country town where everyone knows everyone.

Some of the key things to do are:

    joinchannel GLFF and

    joinchannel gmoors

Then create an additional chat tab and filter it to include these 2 channels.

This is where all the grouping talk happens and all the pvp chat.

So many people are not aware of this.

Anyway, I'm going to log in for a few hours now, and later on today we are doing our weekly Dragioch (dragon) 12 man raid. Looking forward to it.

Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76)
Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe

Prior to the F2P implementation, I would have encouraged playing it. As it stands right now, I can't see any good reason to play it. The best I can do is provide you with positive and negative things about the game, and let you decide after doing some research.

    Positive

    1. First and foremost, the setting is Middle Earth during the Third Age. You will experience the story, at least in its periphery, as seen in the books. The game is story driven and some areas require you to have completed storylines related to their lore. Moria is a good example of this.

    2. The classes all have a unique feel to them. I started out with a loremaster - which primarily focuses on crowd control and damage over time - and I loved it (until Moria). Each class offers something to the party and this game has mostly avoided class homogenization.

    3. The graphics are wonderful and the game world itself is skillfully created. Each area feels unique and offers a compelling atmosphere, rich with lore and exploration.

    4. Legendary weapons you can level up

    5. The ability to form an in-game band

    Negative

    1. The combat is not smooth, in any way, and can be greatly frustrating in tense moments. I recall many times on my loremaster wanting to use an interrupt but because of the animation delays, it was mis-timed and counted for nothing. Guardians' skills activate slowly and have animation delays after them, hunter's skills often activate slowly and then have an induction time on them. The worst is trying to heal. I leveled a minstrel to 65, before the cap was raised, and found healing to be absolutely atrocious. The animation delay is by far one of the poorest thought out game features I have ever had the frustration of experiencing.

    2. Grind. There is a lot of it. The game offers a virtue system, which basically makes grinding achievements essential for your character to be viable. Prepare to use a skill 1000 times (no exaggeration) and kill thousands of the same mob  to acquire the basic functionality of your character.

    3. Skirmishes. I can't tell you how many times I have ragequit these wonders. You'll be low on mana (forget its title) and will not be able to control your companion to any useful degree.  I never found the experience gained during these to be anything worth their time. Once again, it's more grinding for coins of some sort.

    4. The Store lacks usability

    5. Dread. Worst game mechanic ever.

It's been a year or so since I have sincerely played this game, I quit after Siege of Mirkwood for many reasons. The combined frustrations and the manner in which the store functions, I no longer found any joy in the game. I encourage you to research the game, try the free-to-play (prepare to pay for every little thing) and come to your own conclusions. Sadly, I don't think it will be as enjoyable as was for me in 2007-2010.

  • fenistilfenistil Member Posts: 3,005

    Nah I would advise against.

Lotro used to be great game BUT it underwent great changes, bad changes.

Awful grind, content is getting more and more bugged, game revolve more and more around cash shop(pvp on monster side is basically p2w) lately nad newest zones are FAR worse than first zones that are great.

Imo quality of this game just simply dropped with alot of small changes here and there.

  • nolic1nolic1 Member UncommonPosts: 716

Well I haven't posted anything here for a while but will on this. I play Lotro have sense day one and can say that the game has changed alot but not really for the bad IMO. They made things easier to achsess is all with the instance finder and the scaling dungeons and skirmishes. The game has some of the best group play to date for dungeon running and will admit you can solo to max easy if your into that. I started of Windfolla and have sense moved to Riddlemark do to player base not all capped I take my time with games not rush it so no max level toons and of course I take 2-3 mopnth breaks from games to play others but this is still one of my main games I play.

One thing this game has is a great history and lore the PvP/Monster play is good when your max lvl hero or you have more then one monster to play (Silver Member been tis way sense F2P). I have not payed to play almost any game sense this released F2P. This game has alot going for it from what I have played through just now getting to Isengard and loving it so far. My friends and some family play it as well and they all enoy it alot because its not all flashy on gear and spell effects this feels more real type combat then flashy lighting strikes from your sword. The Legendary system takes a little to get used to at first but one of the best editions in the game plus they lvl with you. As for all the negative your getting is standerd in todays MMO I personaly dont like WoW because I dont like the fluppy eared elfs well graphics to me suck. But I do mess with it from time to time on my free to 20 play account.

Lotro isnt for everyone like any game but its better to just try it your self then decide for your self. Myself I bounce around alot on games so I mostly end up here more then any where else also you can unlock all content and skirmishes and other stuff for under $100 in there Turbine Points upto Isengard that will be a higher price for now till they do another point sale. Also F2P didn't ruin the game it did make it more tho but didn't make it uber pay to win or anything its really ust that a store for this and that. You can earn enough points to get what you need per toon such as trait slots and riding skill from basic play everything else like quest areas and so on can be done this way but takes along time.

Well thats it really sorry for the mish mash of stuff but don't reveiw stuff much and this is just my personal opinion.
