Cooling question

JarazarJarazar Member Posts: 231

I Just bought a new computer case and I need help with fan placement. The case has the following fan vents and I want to know which direction I need to put the fans for maximum cooling. I have researched online, but get conflicting answers:

1. One vent in the front -

2. One vent in the top -

3. Two vents in the side -

4. One vent in the back -

I bought enough 120mm fans to put in all spots. Please reply with the direction that the fans need to be blowing for optimum cooling.

The conventional setup is to blow air in the front and side, and out the top and back, so that's probably what you should do.  If your parts are very unusual such that they kick a lot of hot air toward the front of the case (e.g., a pair of Radeon HD 6990s in quad CrossFireX), then you might need to do something unorthodox.

For a typical single GPU setup, you could have any two of the five case fans die and still have plenty of airflow.  As long as it's 3 fans in and 2 out or vice versa, you can't mess it up too much.

Convention says that pretty much all fans should be blowing in except those on the rear or top of the case, which should blow outward. There is no hard and fast rule that governs this though, and there are some circumstances where you may want to deviate from that.

I highly recommend putting all 5 of your fans on a variable speed controller - as you may find that it's plenty of case cooling and you may want to tweak it down to save on the noise.
