Engagement system

Hello,

starting to follow this game with some interest. Would like to be clarified on the "engagement system".

It is stated in the games website that "Engagements in The Repopulation spawn randomly throughout the world and using any number of different templates" and that "Engagements templates can specify a complex chain of stages. Each stage can be end when certain specifications are met, or after a period of time. Depending on how an engagement ended it can progress to a different stage and it can also spread to other nearby engagement nodes. Those child nodes can in turn continue to spread to children of their own. "

Q: will these engagements have levels of dificulty in direct relation with the area level where they spawn, or are they random and a low level area can have a spwan of a high difficulty engagement?

Q: talking about engagement chains, can a engagement spread to a lower level of difficulty engagement node?

Engagements templates can specify a complex chain of stages. Each stage can be end when certain specifications are met, or after a period of time. Depending on how an engagement ended it can progress to a different stage and it can also spread to other nearby engagement nodes. Those child nodes can in turn continue to spread to children of their own.

I'll tackle both of those questions in one response as the mechanics explanation sort of covered both.

One thing to note is that our areas have a bit wider target range than a traditional level based theme park zone does these days. There is some overlap. But in general the difficulty will be in appropriate to nearby spawns.

Engagements occur based on a trigger based grid. Each particular area can assign parents, children, and a list of engagements that are possible to occur in that area. The engagements will trigger randomly when players are within an area, and once they are active they will continue until the end conditions (different for each) are met, in which case they can continue, end, mutate into a new engagement and/or affect children with mutations.

However in order for an engagement to spread into a new area, the child area must support it. As a result a high difficulty engagement may only spread so far before it reaches an area where it can no longer exist. Engagements should also only spread to areas that fit within the proper setting.

There is currently no limit to the number of engagements that any region can support, it's completely up to the area designer. Some engagements are designed to occur in many places throughout the world, and others are unique to certain settings. An area for example, might support 20 different engagement opportunities, but have a very small chance of any of them occuring.
