Emergency Internet

Well, it seems my mate has 'cloaked' some information from me, regarding my impending move into his house this week. It would appear there is no internet whatsoever.

Now, before i let my rage kick in, i am trying to think of the best way to solve this horrifying discovery. So i need advice on what options i can use to be best able to login to SWTOR:

a) A Pay as you go Mobile Internet Dongle - I believe i can get 3GB for £15 on vodafone. Fingers crossed signal holds.
b) ...i haven't thought of a b)

So, considering i don't want to airhack the new neighbours (assuming they even have WiFi), are there any other options available to me? There is a pub with free WiFi really really close by, uses this Cloud crap, but i doubt the signal would reach surely.

I think i have just that option, but i thought i would put it out there.

ta :)

By this do you mean there is no provider ? Or simply that the house has no internet? Also where are you on the map?

Honestly if you're not too bothered about your ping then mobile broadband would be fine. I had to use it for about a month and whilst it's not great for playing FPS games where a low ping is completely necessary you should be fine in an MMO.

Just remember to keep an eye on how much bandwidth your using, 15GB can be used easily within a day if you're not careful. You will have to avoid things like youtube unfortunately.

Well this is the thing. From previous experience, even if there is a working line in a property, the ISP must 'activate' the line if the line rental was cancelled by the previous owner. This is simply flicking a switch at the exchange. However, they can take weeks to do this, just because they can.

What you mean on the map? Erm, Worcestershire, England.

Hard to say for England. In the States I would just use my rooted Android phone to get hotspot access and play over 3G :P

Chances are that there's a neighbors that have an open connection, or you can always go to a coffee shop and hang out for a while

I'm actually on it now and yes, videos kill it like lightning. It flicks from HSPA (fast), to 3G (slow) quite often, but thats signal here i think. However, i did some research and apparently MMO's use tiny amounts of bandwidth, like 3mb/hour i think i read, as it is all client side.

Yeah I had that prob when I moved here, last tenant was behind on his cable bill.

I asked about your location because COmcast has a decent deal (34 bucks a month for cable and their fastest net) since you're not in the US that's irrelevant.

I'm not aware of what your options are in England. Sorry :)

Yeh, i think that's my only option. The dongles can go a bit faster though and i can upgrade the allowance as i go.

Bandwidth playing should be no problem.  A typical MMORPG only uses 3 to 5 kbit per second, which only works out to a few megs an hour.

Patching can be an issue and will eat bandwidth quickly, especially if the patcher uses a torrent like system where not only are you downloading the patch, you're sending data to other clients.

Dial-up via land line telephone might be an alternative depending on where you are.  The connections are very slow but enough for an MMO.

Zaggle or V21 are unmetered, though V21 can be a bit sh*t at times. But not sure how long it would take for you to set up on them with the holidays this close. Mobile would probably be the quickest choice right now.

These guys might be something to look into as well. >clicky<

at walmart they got usb 3g adapters that you can buy and set up plans for a month, you might be able to return it after your done with it even to get you money back cause there kida expensive, I think 120$ or something, maybee cheaper, could be 60 or 90 or something.

yea here it is, 59.99$ at walmart, Virgin Mobile Brodband2go 3G usb adapter.

Im the king of finding places to use internet or ways.  IF you cant get your own in time use coffe shops with WiFi untill you do, I love going to WiFi hotspots in downtowns.

To actually play teathering mobile, or a dongle will be fine, and data usage is suprosingly low while playing. 3gb would get you a months heavy play id guess.

But the problem comes to patching.... You do know as with every mmo, there will be downtime, and several not so small patches right from tthe Go.

Good luck, neigbours Wifi if they have sounds the best option..

Or get an emergency ISP install, maybe it will cost ya more, but enough and they will do it within the week (Virgin Media will if pay above the odds, and for the VIP as tey call it 50/100mb as you they make there money back quick!)

there is a 10gb per month satalite provider i dont know much about it

only saw a few adverts  but maybe you could look them up but they promise 6 megs speed ectra  anywhere in the  uk

in a satalite dish  but i have a feeling they cost a lot

the other thing you could do is  get broadband  on plus net  they had a £6-£3  a month offer

so for £60  you would be set up for a year they gave 20 gb  a month with that  with unlimited overnight

but depends on how long your in your friends but  if your there for 3 or more months could be worth doing

I've had continuous internet access here in Florida since January 1996. I can't imagine how this predicament is even possible. Personally, I would have made certain there was internet access before making plans to move in. This means going to his house and checking it.
  • VegettoVegetto Member Posts: 841

Ok guys, thanks for the comments.

It does seem Mobile Internet is the way to go. I have the dongle already (stole from work), so i can just top it up with a card, £15 for 3GB. If it uses, worst case scenario 5mb/hr, i will still get plenty of use out of it, just no...other entertainment ;P.

As for patches, unfortunately they probably replace old files, rather than introduce a new folder, so it would mean burning it to DVD's at work each time. But then again, i'm sure i can steal an external HDD from somewhere.

Fingers crossed it isn't in the 0.1% no coverage area lol.

Even if i did, it wouldn't matter. When selling a house, most people will disconnect their utilities, including line rental, before hand. My other friend switched straight over between ISPs without an issue, but if there hasnt been anyone in the house and the line is deactivated, it's weeks however you look at it. Best case is 3 weeks.

Did you check the link in my post? Those guys look to use wireless so all you would need was to plug directly into the wireless modem. No landline connection or install needed.

You're right, there will be no porn watching on your stolen dongle due to the bandwidth limitation.
  • holifeetholifeet Member Posts: 532

Get an internet provider and move in to the pub while it's being plugged in. Free wi-fi, access to a bar and 4-5 hours of SWTOR an evening...

...might be more expensive than the dongle though.

    Problem solved image

Or buy a new friend, move in to their place and use their internet. It seems this current one is doing what my friends might and trying to stop you playing games...'just don't tell him there's no internet'.

All hail the Pixel, for it is glorious Orange!

I'd just grab a 3G stick. I have 15Mbs 3G and it costs like 10 EUR /month with unlimited use. Not sure how it'll work with games, since I'll only use it while traveling and surfing Internet. But I think it should be more than enough since even my Android phone comes with limitless 2Mbs connection that is enough to play LOTRO online without hicups. Not sure what SWTOR eats though.

I tried playing WoW over a 3g dongle and it was pretty rough. The latency is pretty bad. It was like I was playing in jello.
