The latest results of the Tribble section shows that this game is going down hill into a money pit. All the promises made to the Lifetime and monthly subscribers are out, the new leaders of Cryptic are lying through their teeth. The reprisals against those who dare to speak against PWE and Cryptic are making the enviroments a very hostile one. many players have been banned permanently and accused of hate speach because they dare to criticize the almight Chinesse mafia group that runs PWE.
I will advise you to stay away from this game and the money greedy leaders who dont care about the players and the promises made to them to suck them in in buying LTS and monthly subscriptions.
I say boycott STO until they apologize to the player base, unbann all the players and retract themselves from the garbage they are trying to shovel down throat of the players.

They have release a new bling bling in the C-Store instead of fixing the bugs of the game.

Mayito just what promises have they broken to us lifetime members? So far I liked how they were handling the turn over to play for free, something change? The Lifetime members were well compensated monthly on the plan I saw.
"Stay away from this game"
I saw this title and immediately decided to stay away from this game because it said to. I almost didn't even click on the thread because the warning was just that convincing.
Sike, not really.
If I have interest in a game I'd play it regardless of what someone told me to do or not.
"TO MICHAEL!"
I don't play STO but I would assume those making the bling are a different group than those doing bug fixes... Just a hunch..

I agree totally. I use to fully support Cryptic...even when they were taking a lot of fire from STO's launch. Now, I can not support anything they are doing. I have cancelled my sub to Champions and wish I could take back my LTS for STO. Very disappointing. STO had improved greatly since launch but it appears that Cryptic's new masters are not running things very even handly. I would not give them ANY billing information at this point either.
Let's party like it is 1863!
As for the pet release in the store, who really cares lol. Don't like it don't buy it, after all its just Bling. Some complained about them not fixing bugs, and I agree that should have first priority, although none of the bugs they listed have I ever encountered. As most of the team is working on the free to play verision of the game, I doubt they have much time to create things other than bling right now. I'm certainly not concerned about those factors at present as Cryptics record of add ons and improvements to the game have been stellar so far.
Yeah, they only just had an awesome 8+ month content drought, they're making sure by dilithium to force people to pay for every single thing they want to recieve in a timely manner, be that ships/gear/crafting. Selling ships for over $20 in their c-store already, yea it's looking totally peachy. In before "OMG SPARKLE PONY", well the sparkle pony is just a MOUNT, a ship is basically YOU in this game. A mount does nothing at all in "that" game and can't even be compared to a ship.
But hey, they added a new pet to the C-store, that's so stellar. Wish other companies did so well for their subscribers who've had to watch by as their game (cash-grab game in all fairness), falls even deeper to the PAY2WIN swamp of Perfect World.
Also Cryptics record is abysmal and not even worth mentioning if you wish to support them. Look up Peregrine_Falcon's post about KDF if you think they've any credibility left.
This game was doomed back in 2004 when Perpetual started working on it. It's time for STO to go the way of SWG and then maybe a real developer could could make use of such a popular IP. What a waste.
Yes, lifers get 400 c-store points a month free.
However, as of today many account-wide items are being converted to per-character items and if you accidentally drag an item off your bag and discard it you can no longer go back to the store and reclaim you already purchased item, you have to buy it anew.
Items you had already paid for, such as the $15 Excelsior, are losing their abilities and to get them back you have to purchase multiple tiers of excelsior $15 and $25 = $40 for the same thing!
Crafting items that you would grind for now need the inclusion of paying real money.
dstahl said that most c-store items would go down in price or stay the same, but 73% of them have gone up!
They are a separate group. The gist of the thread does acknowledge that and asks if those resources would be better tasked/spent on fixing bugs and making new mission content instead of more and more cash store items.

Quite a few lifers there that I personally have seen posting since BETA. As much as I would like to remain hopeful that Cryptic will change their minds about many of these F2P decisions, I personally believe this will be STO's NGE.
I tried the trial and the game just didn't do it for me. It's ALL instanced...so no real open world at all...very little pvp, those two things killed it imo. Just my preference though. Game play itself was actually very, "trek like."

"You're either with us or against us"
I actually like and enjoy STO, and I recently tried one month sub to see if Cryptic had fixed some of the problems that existed at launch.
Cryptic did fix some stuff, I was surprised and thankful, but two issues remain that keep me from playing... the excessive bandwidth required to connect and play the game and the geographical location of the Server near Boston, which has a terrible Internet backbone performance history compared to other places in the US that the Server could be located. Both of these issues make playing STO a headache and a frustration. I do NOT have these issues with connecting and playing any other MMO and I have told Cryptic that in several posts and emails. Cryptic can fix both of these issues and it would benefit the players tremendously.
Will they change it? Doubtful. Below I outline why they probably won't change a thing.....
Boycott them until they apologize to the players?
Not going to happen. Ever.
We players are just 'resources", didn't you know that? That is what players are to all MMOs. Lose some Players here, gain some more from over there, they . do . not . care . one . bit, and the few employees of the MMOs that do care are eventually weeded out and pink slipped.
That is what Money, and the pursuit of it, has done to all parts of life and society. Welcome to the 21st Century.
I have to agree with the OP, staying away from this game is the best advice I could give any potential F2P player looking to try out Star Trek: Online.
I left the game a few months ago, but kept an eye on the goings on via the forums. I had a hunch STO would go F2P based on the severe drop-off in subscribers, the lack of activity in the most populated locales within the game, and the inexplicable and very sudden drop-off in anything new being brought to the game.
Cryptic claims the drop-off was because of the sale to PW taking up their focus. Personally though, I feel their focus has been on F2P for much longer than they were willing to admit.
And why wouldn't they admit it? The answer is very simple, if not sickening. Cryptic funded, and continues to fund the F2P changes and transition, on the backs of their current subscribers. It's unthinkable that a company would pull off such an underhanded dealing. People don't subscribe to a game with the intention of funding a change in business which results in the subscibers recieving less than they signed up for, but that has been the case in the past 6-9 months, as the content on the Live servers stopped coming, and all focus went to F2P conversion.
My personal reasons for leaving the game centered around the Developers inability to focus on issues that needed fixing, and instead jumping around to whatever they felt they could make money on in that particular moment. Case in point, bridges and interiors. When Cryptic delivered the TOS Bridge and Interior, it was the best bridge/interior they had ever produced. It got people excited that perhaps it signaled that Cryptic would be going back and fixing the rest of their bridges and interiors, which are of poor quality and improperly sized. Instead, it seems Cryptic decided to go work on other things, and the bridges and interiors were forgotten. Granted, these seems like a small issue, but it is a symptom of a much larger malady, the developers case of ADHD, where they focus on something for a month of two, punch out a one-off fix or polish to the game, but then instead of finishing the polish across the rest of the game, they drop it to work on something else. What that produces is intermittent spots where the game actually functions properly, or looks as good as it should, but then similar aspects elsewhere in the game are still broken, or look like crap.
As I have continued to follow the rambling course Cryptic is taking on their path to F2P, it seems that the once touted focus on "polish and fixes" that the former Executive Producer, Dan Stahl, swore to, has been forgotten, and a new focus is emerging. This new focus seems to be based in a new philosophy, and the philosophy is "Let's get as much buck as we can out of this game, and we'll cut our losses in the end."
Frankly, with the changes being delivered on the Tribble Test-Server, it's becoming more and more apparent that the "gamer" is not even Cryptic's target audience anymore. Much the opposite in-fact. It seems Cryptic wants to cash in on a particular type of fan which I dub "The Convention Goer". We all know the type. The "Convention Goer" is the type of fan that makes yearly pilgramages to the annual Star Trek convention, dressed up as their favorite character, to see their favorite actors time and again. Now, that's not to say there is anything wrong with that, but that type of fan is also easily exploitable. That type of fan in particular doesn't recognize that the yearly pilgrimage to the convention is nothing but a cash grab. Nothing changes year to year, the actors are the same, only they get older, and really the event seems to be more a focus on getting dressed up and hanging out with others who are dressed up.
This is how Cryptic sees their player base. Not as intelligent gamers, but rather an exploitable noob, who will buy that "super cool belt for your uniform, now complete with DS9 Season 6 Version 2 Tricoder!" And they know they have their players over a barrel, considering the lengths people will go to in order to customize their character. All of their focus has been, is now, and ever shall be on their infamous "C-Store" which will make the "Convention Goer" player of STO able to make their character as "cool" as it can be.
And in that directed focus on the C-Store, the rest of the game suffers. "Bug fixes? Who needs that? We're giving you a Season 5 USS Defiant with accurate battle damge, for only $19.95 plus shipping and handling!" New content? Forget about it! Who needs new content when you can dress up like Captain Kirk from Season 2, Episode 19 in that costume he wore for 4.65 seconds that didn't even make it to air, but can be found on the Special Edition Blu-Rays!
This is the future of STO. Not a game which is striving to overcome the obvious, glaring deficiencies of a game that wasn't finished when it launched, but rather a game that will try to maximize it's profits on the backs of a few dedicated Trek fans that don't know any better and will shell out ungodly amounts of US Dollars, Canadian Dollars, British Pounds, Euros, Deutschmarks and Aussie money for that simple bit of pixels that allows them to dress up like a character from the show in particular episode. But in the end, when the "gamers" leave because the game still sucks and still has issues, and all that are left are the "dress-up" fans, Cryptic will unplug the game and run off with whatever cash they could make on this convoluted new direction for STO, and the real losers in all this will be the ones who played the game for so long, stuck with it, even in the lean times, and inevitably FUNDED Cryptic's exit strategy from their failed endeavor of an MMO.
This is why I am advising every gamer I know, as well as anyone reading this post, to stay far away from Cryptic and STO.
All I want is some sort of decent PVP in the game.
Is that asking to much!?
Cryptic Studios is not interested in what the players want. They are just seting themselves up for the Christmas season to make money before December 20, 2011.
I think in all F2P is a good idea if the company making the game has integrity to produce a quality game. However, all these games only have one objective. Make the game seem great for six months, then break everything by removing features. Then act like they are putting new things in the game when it is just things the took out from before.
Mysteriously, the original people go away once they have their payday. Then a new staff comes in and waters down the game after three years so they can go on to make another game. This is probably why the gameindustry turns over in three years on the average. Just greedy programmers creating a money laundring scheme.
I do not see the benefit of playing online games anymore. I think I am just going to waste my money on movies and 9.99 video games, that developers cannot mess up with a crazy patch that breaks the perfectly good working game.
[Mod Edit]
Sadly I paid for a LTS, so my only satisfaction I can get is to wait for the game to die and smile as the programmers and developers get fired one after the other.
I am certainly not going to invest in a California based company anymore. They are all rip-offs.
Star Trek Online and Final Fantasy XIV contributed to the MMO slump period... 2010 was the worst year for MMOs and the slump still resonates to this day.
From a Cryptic game? Absolutely! That's just not what they do, nor has it ever been.
"Oh my, how horrible, someone is criticizing a MMO. Oh yeah, that is what a forum is about, looking at both sides. You rather have to be critical of anything in this genre as of late because the track record of these major studios has just been appalling." -Ozmodan
As far as I read, the day for compromise is now over. The dil with crafting is still there. The VA token, that used to be given out as soon as you reached that level and needed it is now a sub only and you get to wait for almost 2 years to get it, all of the grinds with dil for even subbed players remains, the NERFs with the skillbox revamp are never going to CHANGE, etc etc etc. They have stated they're going to work now on "bug fixes" and push the CHANGES live over a month before even the F2P launch. "Pay to beta?"
As with most "betas", what they have worked on is included and will still be what goes to live. You never played SWG, did you? If you did, you would probably know what is going to happen next.
Got to say that I love seeing ultimate CDF people like Armsman depressed. It just seems like sweet justice to those with valid complaints prior to F2P, that he trampled on. It's so awesome.
Also definitely stay away from this game. It's only going to get worse as was expected when PW bought it. Abandon all hope for customer care, it's all about your wallet.

Just the short list of current problems with the game. Notice how a real world currency option is added in to fix them all.
My god, I haven't loled as much since I killed that Jedi in SWG when I was a bounty hunter and he dueled me for a laugh but not to the death. I killed him and took the bounty. Boy did he shout.
Anyway, I have had a lot of running battles with Armsman who used to try and shout me down for belittled Cryptic or saying STO was not good. I now read his posts and think, serves you right. I only wish I could go on the official forums and tell him so.
He would also say the same thing about TOR and that it was a space shooter on rails. This week, he says he's that upset at Cryptic, he's going to play TOR.
Shesh.
The people too, use to suck up to Cryptic but now... Jonathan Kent, Katic and DavyNY.
Now when the Nagus stops basking in his own glory and stops being the mouthpeice for STO, Revo stops sucking up, Ashara and Maina start listening to both sides instead of telling people "Cryptic is a business, they need to make money" and the worse of the CDF, Nynik start to turn and say they are not happy and are going to stop playing, you know STO is dead...
"Vote STO for best game of 2011 even though it's sucks, it will help Cryptic". Go go Nynik!!!!
Okay JK you guys, er guess what, no I am not. Your sucking up to Cryptic is too cloying...

It has surely been an interesting time to be reading the forums. Even more so now that the latest path to f2p thing is out. Now, apparently, there is no new Featured Episodes till after February is it? I think most people were led to believe that they would be receiving the new FE shortly after the F2P release. Oh well, time to watch the forums, see what happens next.
Except that STO was never popular and was not a good game to start with compare to SWG
There are no such thing as "chinese mafia group". I believe the proper term is "triad", lol
Actually they cannot be a triad either. As PWI acquired assets in the US, the proper term for a criminal group in an immigrant community is a Tong. lol
Somebody on another thread said they haven't had any new content in 7 months.
Didn't they used to say they were gonna have a new episode every week?
