FFXIV to charge in December/Revamp Outlined

MuruganMurugan Member Posts: 1,494

http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com/pl/teaser/

Some details:

1. A complete redesign of current repetitive maps

2. The implementation of a new graphics engine

3. A new server system designed for increased speed and performance

4. A fully renewed user interface

5. The expansion of in-game community content

The new graphics engine will cause certain objects to display differently than they do in the current version.

Because of this, we will allow all current players the opportunity to re-customize the race, gender, and

appearance of their characters upon the implementation of the new engine

Area maps are what make up the realm of Eorzea, and those areas are built on a

foundation of servers. Unfortunately, the current server network used in FINAL

FANTASY XIV is inherently flawed and will require a massive overhaul to meet the

high expectations we have set for the future of the project. To ensure global

success and stability over the game’s extended lifetime, we began work on the

construction of a completely new server system earlier this May.

FANTASY XIV is inherently flawed and will require a massive overhaul to meet the

high expectations we have set for the future of the project. To ensure global

success and stability over the game’s extended lifetime, we began work on the

construction of a completely new server system earlier this May.

A Server System Built to Support a Worldless Model

?Party/content matching for players from different World servers

?High-speed searches for PCs, items, player community data

?Changes to the basic infrastructure to improve data transfer efficiency

Planning documents for

the new northern Thanalan.

(still under development)

The new server system is already up and running on internal development equipment, and we are in the process of finalizing general

search features, the party system, the friend system, and more. At the current pace, we hope to have all basic system features

completed by February 2012.

After that, we will begin work on the worldless party matching system, as well as the porting of all current content data and player

character data. We expect these tasks to be complete by the third quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013.

Rebuild: UI System

A Fully Renewed User Interface

image

New Concept Art for the Imperial Stronghold

From a programming standpoint, the

multi-tiered code used in the

current UI system has become

overly complex, preventing us from

making the improvements we have

planned.

Therefore, we have chosen to

completely rebuild the UI system

core in conjunction with the server

system updates. Not only will this

allow us to implement new features,

but also significantly improve

response times and open the door

for user-made add-ons.

*What are Add-ons?

Add-ons are user-generated UI content

created by fans from around the world for

use within a company-developed game. Addons

are customizable, and help to enhance

the overall gameplay experience.

Rebuild: UI System

?An auto gear change system designed specifically to work with the Armoury

?A UI system that allows for toggling between text and icon display

?An environment that supports user-generated add-on content (PC only)

The renewed UI will feature completely

redesigned windows with improved

functionality and expanded customizability.

We also plan to offer:

- Full support for keyboard and mouse users,

including multi-window capability and

stress-free drag and drop functionality.

- A specialized interface designed for game

pad users.

In this new area, the three Grand Companies of

Eorzea will battle over control of newly

discovered ancient ruins and the secrets that lie

within. Details will be revealed through quests.

Reboot: A New Player Community

Strengthening of the Player Community

The implementation of a new server system will allow us

to greatly improve and expand upon current player

community features. The following is a list of some of

the additions being planned:

?Additional in-game community options

?Free Company establishment, growth, and competition)

?In-game delivery and mail systems

?Player housing (estates)

?PvP content

?Revamping of the retainer system and markets

Implementation of the aforementioned features will begin

in the third quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013.

Allow me to thank you all for your continued interest in FINAL FANTASY XIV.

One year has passed since the game’s release, and despite the disappointment surrounding its launch, we have received a wealth of support from you, the players. Your encouraging words and continued loyalty have been a source of immeasurable inspiration to everyone involved with FINAL FANTASY XIV’s development.

In the ten months since the FINAL FANTASY XIV team’s restructuring, we have put forth the utmost effort into not only improving the game’s existing features, but also creating a concrete plan to outline the game’s new direction. Today, I am pleased to announce we can confidently present that plan to our customers. We fully realize this is but a single step towards our ultimate goal, and that to meet the high standards set in the plan, more time is required. In the meantime, however, we will not waver in our commitment to bringing players exciting and engaging content, even as the game moves through its evolution.

With this, it is my hope that we will continue to receive your support as we will need to bring the unbilled period to a close between late November and early December 2011, and introduce our subscription-based billing system. I appreciate that this decision will not be popular, but it is a necessary step in building upon the foundation our fans and development team have made together and to realize the full potential of FINAL FANTASY XIV.

The team will stop short of nothing as they move towards realizing the new FINAL FANTASY XIV, and as they do so, I humbly ask for both your understanding and support.

    President and CEO, Yoichi Wada

An Announcement from the Development and Operations Teams

This is an announcement for all of you playing FINAL FANTASY XIV, for all of you who have stopped playing, and for those of you looking forward to the PlayStation®3 system version. A year has passed since FINAL FANTASY XIV service began, ten months of which came in the wake of major organizational changes to the development team. As promised when those changes were first made, we have been working diligently towards bringing you a new FINAL FANTASY XIV. Today, I would like to tell you more about that, while also laying out details regarding the release of the PlayStation®3 version, explaining fundamental reforms planned over the next several years for the game in general, and sharing with you some of the results yielded by our efforts so far.

Conclusion of the Unbilled Period and Commencement of Subscription Billing

The unbilled period has remained in place for the past year as our development and operation teams of over 250 staff have worked to bring you FINAL FANTASY XIV. I apologize for the belated nature of my next announcement, but as significant updates to the game have been released over the last ten months, a portion of the team has also been simultaneously devoted to working solely on the new FINAL FANTASY XIV. This is an essential part of the process of realizing the ideal we have envisioned. Planning for the new FINAL FANTASY XIV began in January of this year, and April saw the start of large-scale tasks. Since then, however, we have made no compromises in the game’s operation and updates. I believe this is evident if you review the contents of the updates that have been released thus far.

Every resource possible has gone into this year’s patches. The ideal that we have for FINAL FANTASY XIV, however, is extremely high, and we are aware that all of the following changes are still required to achieve the desired quality of service—redesign and restructuring of server layout and operation, overhaul of the user interface, reworking the design and specs of in-game areas, and vast upgrades to the player community systems.

As we move closer towards this ideal, and as the operation of the game, the regular updates, and the development of the new FINAL FANTASY XIV continues, we will introduce our subscription-based billing system.

Following the results of the development and operations teams’ efforts, together with the release of the overall plans for the game’s future, we will bring the unbilled period to a close between late November and early December of 2011, and thereafter introduce our subscription-based billing system. Further details will be sent to the email address players submitted at the time of their FINAL FANTASY XIV account registration, and will also be posted on the Lodestone at a future date.

Needless to say, with the onset of the subscription-based billing system, operation and development of the game will proceed, and updates will continue to be released regularly as they have been. Between now and release of the new FINAL FANTASY XIV, we will do as much as possible by way of fine-tuning the game and adding new content. Our focus will be on the theme of a story that can only be experienced in the here and now, and the dramatic changes to Eorzea will be incorporated into that storyline. Each update will deliver an unprecedented and unrepeatable game experience. For those of you continuing to play, I promise that the release of these updates and the eventual transition to the new FINAL FANTASY XIV will both come smoothly and seamlessly.

In order to enable us to provide you with an ever-improved FINAL FANTASY XIV that meets all of our high ideals, I ask for both your patient understanding and cooperation.

Temporary Suspension of Automatic Renewals for the Subscription-based Billing System

Anyone who has played FINAL FANTASY XIV at any time since its release is already in possession of a FINAL FANTASY XIV service account. These accounts are set to renew their subscriptions automatically, barring deactivation by the account holder. Therefore, if we were to begin regular subscription billings for all existing contracts, players who will not see this announcement or who may not currently wish to pay subscription fees would automatically begin to be charged for their accounts. To avoid this, we have decided to first suspend all automated renewals for service accounts. Only account holders who have agreed to reactivate the automated renewal system will be billed.

Many of you have enjoyed FINAL FANTASY XIV over the past year, growing accustomed to the service we have in place. I realize that this is a terrible inconvenience, but we very much hope that you will continue to enjoy the game. I can only ask for your understanding that we are determined to allow all users an equal opportunity to reach their own decision regarding subscription-based billing. Details regarding precise scheduling will be announced at a later date, as will the official start of the subscription fees.

The New FINAL FANTASY XIV and the PlayStation®3 System Version

Between October and December of 2012, we plan to integrate the current service and the coming PlayStation®3 version into the all-new FINAL FANTASY XIV. At this time, a second free trial period will also be offered.

Among our new plans is the fundamental reworking of in-game maps. As part of this process, there will be a period required for switching over to a new client and new servers, after which there will be a large transfer of data when service is brought back online. After the new client is completed, new software for the PC version will be distributed online, and can be acquired free of charge. Character data and progress for players already playing the PC version will also be preserved, allowing those players to continue using their in-game avatars. Another announcement will be made in the future as the day on which the new FINAL FANTASY XIV software will become available for download draws near, and the PlayStation®3 system version officially released.

A New Decision from the Development Team

As previously stated, it has been over ten months since the development team underwent significant changes. I apologize that we have been so long in announcing to all of you the overall future plans for FINAL FANTASY XIV. But I assure you that all of us here on the operations and development teams have been putting all our energy into FINAL FANTASY XIV. We have tackled unprecedented challenges maintaining the unbilled period, the frequency and scale of patches, and an open line of communication with the player community—all while completely remaking the game at the same time.

Again, I have included several files detailing the plans and progress we have made, as well as our future schedule. I hope those of you with interest will take the time to look over them.

We will no longer be referring to the “new organization” of the team. It is now simply the FINAL FANTASY XIV team. We are prepared to advance to the next stage of FINAL FANTASY XIV’s life, confident that we can provide a service worthy of the FINAL FANTASY name?a service that includes both content-rich updates and the renovation of existing features?and take full responsibility for all that entails.

I promise that we will continue to give all FINAL FANTASY XIV players our full attention as we do everything in our power to provide a high-quality service, and as such, would like ask for your continued encouragement and support.

As always, everything we do will be for our players and customers.

FINAL FANTASY XIV Producer/Director, Naoki Yoshida

    Interesting stuff.

I've watched this game for awhile now, but never tried it due to the constant negative reviews about the games U.I. It's not clear, but will all this new U.I & graphics update becoming in December or is it much further away?

No, the 2.0 will be coming out next year around this time.

I assume the very first screenshot is a rough look at the new version? If so I have to say it does look a lot better layout in my opinion.

Was always impressed by how they are handling this game. Not many developers would realize their short comings and go to this length to fix it. Hats off to them.

Do people finally realize that SE =/= other MMO devs when it comes to fixing their game? These guys take it all the way and beyond.

Well, it certainly is interesting stuff, my guess is they still see strong potential for big sales with the PS3 launch, however from a PC platform there's probably little hope, games just don't get a 2nd chance and it's highly unlikely this will break the pattern.

By December of next year everyone will be either playing SWTOR/GW2 or waiting patiently for TSW and some other titles.

But this all sounds like great news for FF fans and perhaps they'll finally get the new MMO they were promised.

so when are they charging for it, this nov/dec or later, it says free trial period ends, but not sure when that is. I think they should give people, who bought the game originally a month or 2 with all the changes to see if it even warrants a sub. I really want to like this game, but they have alot to prove to em, and just words aren t enough.

  • nordyanordya Member Posts: 82

This is very exciting, I will be playing FFXIV 2.0 for sure. Hopefully there will be fresh servers for the ps3 release.

SE really shows passion to make that game turn around which is fully possible if the PS3 version coming.
I feel deep respect for their efforts and hope they will get appropriate feedback!

Basically they are doing a completely new game. It's what it needed on my opinion.

I guess I'm the cynic of the bunch.

I really don't understand charging for this game when it will still be in such a broken state. Even with patch 1.19, the game (in my opinion) is not dramatically better than it was 3 or 4 months ago. So, I guess the timing of charging PC players so far between now and version 2.0 is kind of troubling to me personally. I guess I just don't get it besides the fact that they need to re-coop some of their money.

    Am I wrong?

I guess I just don't get it besides the fact that they need to re-coop some of their money.

    Am I wrong?

Probably need some income to keep the team working on the huge design. At first I was no way youre charging me, but even if I don't play until 2.0, I will let them as I believe in FFXIV 2.0

Interesting read, some very welcome stuff in there. Might turn into a solid game after all.

Not sure I'm with this. I can see the merits in subbing for a game which may still need work but has a vision I am behind when the dev team is independant and small, but a multi national corporation asking me to supliment the development of a game that will come out soon? Seriously?

I don't see it this way, they kept the game free for over a year, and at one point they do have to charge for the game. The decision probably comes from higher up than the development team (shreholders/CEO). It was quite unexpected to see them say they would charge come around patch 1.20. Yes they are a multi national and make plenty of money, but then again how many will actually pay? 50% of the people still there? I love FFXI, even if I left with my gf at the time to play WoW we kept our account open for years. I still play it today, I wanted FFXIV to be my new home. I will help finance my new home.

While I have an account, I don't play it, but I will make my part by letting them bill me. Maybe I will mess around a bit in it, but nothing serious as I want to experience 2.0 at ps3 release. There will be a new free trial when 2.0 is implimented to bring back everyone that quit.

That's fair enough, each to their own. But at what point should they start charging in future? If I want to play TOR or TSW or Aion  should I start paying a sub now? Making a contribution to the game that I want to play long term in the future? Like I said, small companies that may not make it to that release I can understand it, but these massive companies don't need our charity. Good luck with FFXiV though I hope they do a great job, I will come back when they release the new game in a year.

I'm a casual player of the game(Lindblum server), and i'm NOT agree with charging fees at the current state of the game.

    Why? here's why:

Things to do on FF XIV that are NOT WORTH PAYING FOR AT THE MOMENT:

1-Do Main story plot quests (lack of motivation, boring quests, bad designed)

2-LIMITED random quests (these ones i like, but there is so few)

3-Repetitive levequests(these are like daily missions)

    4-Broken UI

5-Targeting system(veeeery broken even with the new patch)

    6-Server/Client LAG Example:

7-Linkshell(Guild) managment (not implemented either, looking foward so they say too lol)

8-New search system (not implemented, but soon,so they say)

Lots of more things but i'm done.

Things that ARE WORTH OF PAYING FOR:

    1-Grand Companies:they give intereseting quests,equipment,crafting missions,chocobo license etc.

2-Exp chain system, with this "new" system on the game you don't need to make a party and kill high lvl monsters, instead you can solo, and do chains to get the same exp in solo or duo mode.

    3-New low lvl open-world dungeon (yes,low lvl),love the desing,and the drops.

    4-New equipment (about time)

    5-Ifrit Battle (i like that battle alot,2 modes,easy & hard with lag)

    6- Final Fantasy XIV 2.0

    Fin.

As you guys can see, they want to charge us with fees only because of those worth things,of course they don't think about the NOT WORTH ones...i'll pay for the 2.0 for sure...OH WAIT WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL OCTOBER-AUGUST of 2012!!!

    Meanwhile,we'll be paying 15 Euros/12 dollars(for NA) until 2.0 gets here :D nice...i'm done...

I see what you consider worth paying for.

And if your expectations aren't met, then you obviously won't pay. SE knows this, everyone knows this.

But don't come here talking like your interpretation is the universal rule. There are people, as silly as it sounds, who would pay for this game in its current state, gladly. They have a different interpretation of what's worth paying for and what isn't.

And if SE is fine with said playerbase being very tiny (as opposed to just tiny as it is currently), and the playerbase that ends up staying is fine with having to pay (otherwise they wouldn't pay), then there's no question about it's justification.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

I don't know what that 2.o is exactly, but anyways, the two main things that keep me from paying to play FFXIV is the UI and the time delay between hitting a button to attack and then actually attacking with that move.

The game is still very unresponsive feeling, and the UI is pointlessly painful to clunk and click your way through.

The main story line however (as someone above criticized it) Is one of the best in my opinion, or well, I think it is, mostly because its the very first MMO to actually get me interested enough to read and listen to the story, every other MMO quests were simply click through worthy.

Anyways, I guess I am done with FFXIV, I do hope SE does well with it for all the fans that continue, it is a beautiful game with the best animations I have ever seen in an MMO (well done on that part SE!)

It still won't make FFXIV popular.

    It's too late.

Call me troll if you want, but the game was a flop, and will stay a flop.

I think the changes sound absolutely grand and I have no problem waiting & paying them to continue development on such an awesome game especially if it turns out as great as I'm imagining.

Yoshida has a vision and he's running with it. I've never seen a company care so much about their title, as SE does about Final Fantasy. They wanted to make a great game and failed, now they're fixing it and I think paying to support their efforts, especially since I'm playing the game, seems like a logical thing to do.

While the game, in many aspects at the moment, is not at its greatest there is still enough to do in game to keep me occupied and enjoying myself. I really love the crafting and now that they've adjusted the combat to be more responsive and faster-paced, I'm really enjoying myself.

A year will fly past, just as this one has, and I'll be very excited to see all of the changes!
