i like too read the forums a bit, i look at it this way if the people here where so gifted in what makes a great or good game they would be working on them for a developer and making a good living, not posting on a forum while eating hot pockets and drinking mt. dew lol!
/Shrug. I guess I have the ability to discern between the wheat and the chaffe when it comes to what I read here on these forums.
Sure, I've steered clear of a few titles from what I read here, most notably STO, (well, most anything Cryptic), Dark Fall (almost bought it once, something went wrong with the CC transaction and I bailed), and FFXIV come to mind.
I sort of wish I had paid more attention on some titles such as Rift, AOC, Xyson and some others as it would have saved me some money.
And from what I read here I got to enjoy some great MMO's such as EVE, EQ2 and decent titles such as FE, ROM, Earth Eternal which I never would have given a shot at.
Overall I consider what I've read here to be a win and helpful in navigating the various titles that are available because like someone else pointed out, even for F2P games there is a question of how to spend very rare and valuable free time and I just can't look into every game.
In the end, you sometimes just have to take the plunge and spend the 20-50 bucks and give the game a shot for yourself to see if its the right game for you.

Having frequented this forum for many years, I know exactly what kind of topics to not bother posting in. Sometimes I do though, just for the hell of it.
I primarily use this site as a news site nowadays and get involved in discussions regarding interesting news topics. Otherwise I'll sometimes frequent forum sections of games I'm interested in to see if theres any community news/interesting topics.
As far as answering OPs question goes...I guess it has! In fact I think its the reason I have the high standards that I have for MMOs.
Currently waiting for the MMO industry to put out something good.
I do not like some of the posters here but that is hardly the fault of the site. I have definitely not responded to many a troll but sometimes it is hard not to rise to the bait. Otherwise this site provides me with information. I am happy to visit and read . I just wish the people who posted learnt to respect each other and to understand the importance of having an opinion.
I get in and out of moods about the forums tbh. Sometimes it'll get to me when people are having a virtual war of words over pixels, a verbal fight to the death over why unreleased game A is better than unreleased game B.
Most of the time though it just makes me /rolleyes.
I have found interesting games through discussions here, and while there are some posters I tend to pay less attention to (I'm not a fan of "ignore" there's only one name on my list and I've been here a couple of years), for the most part I enjoy reading peoples' opinions.
Forums are places for discussion, discussion will always pit people against one another. Nature of the beast.
Maybe I'm just hard-headed, but I don't think the forums here have ever put me off playing a game I wanted to try. I like reading peoples' opinions here, but I won't be led by the nose by them either. When it comes to enjoying a game, I could care less what anyone else thinks, it's my own opinion that matters. And hey, it's my wallet too - my money, my time. I'm well aware that not everyone will enjoy the same things I do - nor will I necessarily enjoy the same things everyone else does.
We're all different people here, with different tastes, and if some strong personalities try to turn us into a homogenous mass of slavering worshippers at the altar of some new shiny game, there's plenty of people willing to kick them into touch - and the same thing applies to the haters.
Although it is not the fault of the game itself the obnoxious supporters of certain games have turned me off the game by what they post here. I know it is wrong to be so influenced but I cannot help but think whether the posters represent what I might encounter in the game itelf.
Nah not really. I know that people have VERY diffrent preferences + there always trolls and fanboys so I take that into account.
Currently what kills my inrerest most is 'market shift' towards microtransactions that is taking place.
Even if game if p2p , some of them end up placing cash shops in their games, 2-3 things is not I was able to stomach , but recently p2p games get 20-30 items into their cash shops ,and that is unacceptable to me
Another thing is I am not sure if game won't change their model to freemium so I am reluctant to try games cause of that as well. I started to play Lotro few months before it change to freemium model , and then I tried to play it after p2p -> freemium transition , but I had quit after a while cause I was not able to play with this model as I passionately hate it , because of it's impact on a game and just because I really don't like something you can call core of f2p / freemium model = item shop.
I just don't want ability to buy in-game things for money in a game I play , so obviously item shop and f2p / freemium model is fail for me.
MMORPG.com and massively lately have f2p this / freemum that , microtransaction this articles all the time. This also kill my interest both in gaming as I feel gaming industry is changing into a thing that no longer satisfy my needs and just because constant f2p propaganda / promotion is just tiring and boring.
For anyone that want to try a game , any game. Does not matter if it is p2p , f2p , freemium , mmorpg or mmo or single player or co-op or anything.
STOP caring so much about what articles and forum users say about a game.
Most games you can try for free. Either by gloryfied endless trial in f2p/freemium games , time restricted trial in p2p , demos in single player games, you can also watch many gameplay videos on youtube and similar sites, etc
Form your own opinion , and not just spend countless hours on reading other opinions. Seriously , just don't be lazy.
Following what most other people do / thinks is easy but it is also lazy and you will miss many nice things in life if you act like that.
While alot of the forums for specific games on this site tend to have alot of negative posts about said games, I think MMORPG.com is still an excellent source of information about the entire genre. If it wasn't for MMORPG.com articles, i'd never have heard of certain games, let alone downloaded and tried them.
League of Legends is one such example & just yesterday I found out about The Secret World thanks to the news article on this site about it. I really had set my hopes on SWTOR being the last roll of the mmo dice for me, but it turns out there may still be atleast one game after it worth trying out.
I've studied marketing. When people have a bad experience they are much more likely to vent their experiences about it than when they had a good one. MMORPG.com forums are just some peoples way of letting others know about their experiences (usually bad) with a game. So you'll always have more negative threads than you will positive ones.
For me, MMORPG.com increases my interest in the genre.
Short answer is mmorpg.com content & reviews never solely killed or bolstered my interest in trying a new mmmorpg. I'm an mmo, rpg, corpg enthusiast, so I about try them all to ultimately form my own opinion.

Fact of the matter is that most of the forum posts, the community's contribution, helps to 'point' 'counter-point' my personal impression as to whether my personal interest in any one product 'might' have longevity for me or be another short-term entertainment journey in conjunction with a mmorpg.com review, along with forum feedback.
And the reason why I take it all in, is that I enjoy reading a well-written review and short forum summary forum judgements of community feedback. But with my impression that so much development studio emphasis on a labled "massively" multiplayer game is in actually an emphasis on single-player or party-based cooperative game-play within heavily instaced environments without largely open-world orgainc community or environmental interference or influence, that I have become more distant from the intelectually dishonest portrayal and utilization of the term 'massively' in combination with 'multiplayer', and try to disipher what the game is about.
So at the very onset of reading a review or summary judgement of a 'labeled' 'massively-multiplayer' game, for some time I have been realizing that most of these products are developed to where the main game-play environment is nothing more than a multiplayer interactive lobby of single-player player against a static environment, from which players load into single-player or cooperative party-based game-play environment that has little to do with the connotation of 'massively' as it relates to open-world community encouragement and involvement towards some common massive cooperative or competitive participation.
That afformentioned personal impression about the actual 'massively' term, its' incorporation in game-play mechanics, or lack-there-of, and terminology utilization by players is something, oddly enough, that influences my perception of whether the review is a genuine portrayal of grounded neutrality, as opposed to being written with a protagonistic slant or antagonistic slant. In other words, is this writer going to interject what is so massively-multiplayer about this title or gloss over the game-plays true and much larger foundation mechanics & emphasis on its' single-player, cooperative player, non-orgainc, and overall lack of massive community cooperative elements.
Like many others, I tend to find new games to trial here. The few times a closer look at player comments has made me cancel a download all involve specific issues with the game, such as gender locked classes. Even so, I have Vindictus still on my system, but I don't really have any desire to play it, because gender locked classes sucks all the joy out of it for me. A bunch of people saying, "This game sucks, don't bother," without giving sufficient and specific reasons isn't going to make me cancel my download. In fact, it takes a lot to convince me not to try a game even when other players do list specific issues with a game.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

The biggest issue I see on this particular forum is that the (thinly disguised) hater trolling outnumbers the fan trolling by an order of magnitude...I'm sure you can name the two game forums where this is currently happening daily, and even the primary antagonists.
They don't spend a lot of time hyping the game they anticipate; they spend a lot of time bashing the Enemy.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
I like to read opinions and perspectives. However, with so much bias and agenda on the part of both haters and fanbois I usually treat their posts with a healthy skepticism.
As for MMORPG.com articles. Most are simply demonstration pieces rather than heavily editorial reviews. I'm glad for that. Liking a game is highly subjective (based on opinion and perspective). I pick what I like. I pick what I play. I want to know about the game, not if the reviewer liked it or not.
Forum here on MMORPG.com has taught me quite a bit. It's also opened my eyes to a much larger viewpoint than I had before. I welcome constructive criticism when I post because I like seeing different sides of issues. Reading forums here has also widened my knowledge of more obscure games. Some I'd like to try, others I'm not interested in.
Overall I treat my experiences here as positive.
My experience on this site is similar (in particular the highlighted part). Look, any internet forum is going to have its fair share of rants, angry diatrides and trolls. You just have to sift throught the useless posts (like most of mine) and find the truly informative ones. Having spent a fair amount of time on this site (most of it lurking), I have a few posters I usually follow and "respect" their perspectives (whether I agree or not). My personal favorites are Sovrath, Kost, BadSpock, DarkPony, Kyleran, elocke and a few others I can't remember by name now.
All in all, a pretty good community and a good site for information.

Definetly! Age of Conan never tried it because of the hate spewing forth from these forums. After playing virtually every AAA MMO on the planet and always getting bored before lvl cap I finally broke down and tried AoC last month for the first time and gotta say it's the best freaking game I have ever played (At least for me) Subbed up after a week as F2P and now it's gaming bliss nirvana! I'm never listening to you guys again!
From my experience here games that are hardly ever mentioned are usually the best ones cause people aren't bitching on the forums here...they are busy playing the freaking game!
No, not at all. Sure, I take a look at the forums here and do a quick bit of research but ultimately I'll give anything a go if it appeals to me.
Everyone is looking for, and enjoys, different things. I tend to give most MMO's a fair crack and go in with an open mind. Sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn't...
Hell I've just started FFXIV and it's not as bad as everyone says (if you're a FF fan)
Not at all. Sometimes some elements of the community make my loose my faith in humanity, but as far as games are concerned if you cut through all the trolling and teanage crap there is a lot of useful information to be found here. If I am intrested in a game I am going to try it anyway regardless of anybodys opinion but it is handy to find out what you are in for sometimes and what others think. Every time I have asked about what a game is like 9 times out of ten I have got some very helpful feedback.

AoC carried a poor reputation from it's miserable launch, so there's always going to be some negatives attached to it for certain people. A lot of the rabble rabble about AoC is mostly based on old experiences.
All games are worth a second look after the growing pains, particularly as a F2P. Glad you found a haven.

That would be due to you not noticing that in the past year or so reviews/threads for AOC were getting increasingly positive as the title became far better than it had been during the first days after launch. (where most of the vitrol comes from actually).
I've even reconsidered giving the game another go based on the positive feedback from here and other sources.

I'm actually considering holding off playing the upcoming titles such as SWTOR until 6 months out or so just to avoid the growing pains and see if I end up enjoying the game for longer.
Too many tilles I've discarded including AOC, LOTRO and some others based on my experience in the first 3 months of existance, and I get to thinking perhaps they would have been more fun had I waited some.

These forums are kind of a downer, maybe because most people and myself included come looking here for something else then the one they are currently tired off and then sink in the driftsand of negativity created by fellow burn-outs and sand box worshippers.
I find that between all the Haters and Fanbois there are a tremendous number of average folk that can shed a great deal of light on games I may find interesting. As with ANY source on the net, it's only good if you take the time to do the digging.
I hadn't looked at this thread since I originally posted last night, and I must say the feedback has been great and I agree with mostly everything that has been said.
I wasn't trying to come off as negative about sites such as this, in fact it had gotten me to try or eventually sub to some older or lesser known games such as AoC or Fallen Earth, respectively, it's just that for the one or two I do end up trying out, there are many more I just steer clear of for reasons that maybe are not as legitimate as I had first thought.
Whether it's rightfully so or not will just have to be up to my ability to sift useful information between the opposite poles of blind fanboyism and trolling.
I think that with some people's time constraints with their real world responsibilities (myelf being one of them), it tends to make one perhaps a little more cautious than needed when looking for that one game that realistically could become their primary entertainment outlet.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
