    1) Control, mouse and keyboard are simply unmatched in multiple gaming genres and as PC gamers we could easily use a 360ish type controller for the other stuff.

    2) Graphics!! My games look amazing! You could slap two PS3s together and my rig will pump out the pixels much better than that dusty kids toy.

    3) MOd communities, the guys/gals that mod games increase playtime big time for the gamer savy enough to know how to install them. a good example? Oblivion! With mobs running its probably the greatest rpg ever created... I consider it a gift from god her self lol

    4) MMORPG, RTS, two gaming genres that suck balls on console thrive here.

    5) Piracy, I know, its a bad thing to steal but come on!!!! if i wanted to i can get every new game, movie, album and program for free... I can demo anything i want before i buy and i can play old games through emulation when they are discountinued.

    6) Im not looked down apon as a PC gamer. to the general public im only using my PC which everyone has for surfing the net and doing watever. Im a 30 something put a controller in my hand and everyone thinks im some big kid, loser living in my moms basement (even though i own businesses and my own home lol)

    7) no wife aggro LOL! If i was sitting in the middle of my living room with a 360 remote in my hands 5+ hours a day my wife would chew me up and spit me out. With my PC its tucked away, i can avoid her and game for 10+ hours if i want and she would hardly notice!!!!

We are in the (short) 'Age of the Tablets' (and smart phones). Regardless of how smart they get and how small the components become, you will never have the computing power of a desktop. When you are playing on a handheld unit (phone, tablet, portable console etc). These 'mini-PCs' will allow more people to play (options are always good) but will not supplant the desktop.

The PC is here for the foreseeable future.

Actually it's the other way around, Consoles are PC's with ZERO handicaps, a modern PC has tons of them, for a start they need to be running an OS thats bloated and not designed for gaming, they then need all kinds of abstraction layers and drivers all over the place.

If some smart geek could write and OS that turns a HOME PC into nothing more than a console, playing what ever game is in the drive and running only the drivers and code needed to make it execute the player would see a massive jump in their PC's performance, even though their hardware didnt change.

I believe the technical term for this activity is lobotomization, which is precisely what's required to make a PC more like a console.

Star Wars: The Old Republic set the new bar for EA's pre-order sales according the to the notes for the Q1 Fiscal Earnings Release. The previous bar was set by Battlefield 3

Hmmm funny how EA's top pre oreders are from a PC MMO and second  has huge PC sales as well. I think PC's are here to stay.

    The following statement is false
    The previous statement is true

The PC market is 100% consumer driven. There was no real good reason for consumers to decide that there needed to be a personal computer in every house. It was the computer geek in the house that used it, and everyone else just kind of watched them use it. But consumers wanted them, so the got produced and then the cost was driven down to the point that pretty much everyone had one.

When the general population can have a smart phone or tablet that does everything they want it to do (including games), that will also plug into a dock and do everything they want as a personal computer (including games), then the personal computer as we know it now will go away. Ditto for game consoles. Your game console will be your phone.

For that matter, the smart tabs probably won't even plug into a dock. High bandwidth near field communication will probably mean that all the user has to do is lay the phone on their desk or even keep it in their pocket and they'll still be able to use the big screen and advanced input devices of a desktop computer.

Top it all off with Super WiFi (Wifi that uses the old television band) and you have a convergence of ubiquitous wireless networking, and abundant computing power all in a package that will fit in your pocket.

The Personal Computer is dead! Long live the Personal Computer!

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Excellent work. I started laughing at "I hope you get lip splinters".

Among the best and certainly the most entertaining column I've ever read on MMORPG.com.

Also the porn-premise is an interesting one. I do agree on the pc being the number 1 medium in bringing vast amounts of free arousal to people but I don't think we ought to thank porn for the continued existence of pc games.

Even if the platform is a bitch to develop for (and also very prone to piracy in non-mmorpg-games), it still constitutes a multi billion industry on its own.

We also shouldn't forget the old synonym "home computer" as it contains an important lasting pc quality.

p.s. On a sidenote: We have yet to see the light of day of a 100% adult themed AAA mmorg and I can't fathom why.

That of course assumes, that whatever these future handheld devices can do in terms of computing power, it'll still be enough to satisfy our desires. If a PC of the future could immerse you in full blown all-senses better-than-life virtual reality whereas a smartphone of the future might "only" give you real-time pixelfree raytracing on wall sized 3D holographic screen, I'd still take the PC and have them hook me up in whatever way needed to achieve direct neural interfacing with my new virtual avatar image

Funny that you guys think that smart phones and tablets will kill the pc, ever thought that those devices would kill the console market? Pcs are not going anywhere, there are tons of businesses that use computers, government agencies that use them and not to mention the average person.

No such argument regarding the PC's death has ever made any sense at all, given the rather obvious fact that the PC has never actually died, where consoles on the other hand, have. The PC adapts and upgrades; and the consoles die out and release with newer, less-stable machines with little to no backwards compatibility.

And the reason electronics stores dont have many PC games?  Uhm, I dont know a single person that has purchased a hard copy of a game since, maybe Burning Crusade or something.  Discs in boxes (haha) is basically like going to a music store asking for cassettes. Pc gaming is dead in that sense maybe.  Who would want to call around making sure a location has a copy, then driving there, come home, install, then play when you could buy instantly , download while you make lunch or take a shower and bam your in the game??? Not this gamer, nor anyone I know..

And before you cry "DRM DRM", well. I dont know what to tell you, pros and cons to everything I guess.  "DRM" has never once surfaced as an issue for me, but thats probably because I own 120+ games, and once Ive beaten it / got tired of it dont normally go back and play, especially on a new PC.. except for bioware games.. I play the crap outta those.

Sure the console earns the greater money, but I dont think PC gaming is / or will be dead in any near future.  For every unmoddable / spoon fed / play it ONLY this way console game, there is a starcraft 2 lurking around the corner .. just my 2 cents

    Ignorant argument.

  • ColdmeatColdmeat Member UncommonPosts: 3,407

I've been listening to people spout off about how pc gaming is dead, how consoles will kill the pc market, etc. since the 90's, if not the 80's. My pc says,"lol".

Yeah, I have internet access on my ps3, and on my phone. It's a pain in the ass to navigate a web site compared to my pc.

I would rather not try writing code on the phone, or the ps3.

In the winter, my pc can double as a space heater.

Complete nonsense.  There will always be a home computer, just might not be in the form we are currently familiar with or be controlled differently than we do now.

You have to take into consideration the person who said that, if they had any kind of sage advice they would certainly not be working in an electronics store.  Yes we have heard the same from pundants too, but they too seem to lack the knowledge to be a good judge of that.

Personally I think you will find that computers will be far ore pervasive in the home than they are at present.  And Teala that is also nonsense.  Lately I have to spend time telling parents sending kids to college to not be an idiot and get a tablet of some kind for their kid, get the laptop.  You can't type a paper on a tablet without major aggrevation nor a smartphone.

Has anyone actualy compared numbers here? As in how many games a pc is selling, either it be in store or on the Internet as direct download and how many games consoles sell? Seems to me there are tons of assumption and no facts.

Yeah, and when I was a kid they promised me flying cars and jetpacks, and instead they've delivered us hybrid automobiles like the Prius  image

And yes, I noticed the author wasn't saying they were really going away, but his reasoning of Porn being the PC's savior left the door open for this discussion.

Besides, how long until people can freely download porn to their tablets, and take it into the bathroom with them?  Wait, I think that would be...today. image

The reason why the store fronts are leaving is simple: Downloading games.  Look like Borders as a prime example of this methodology.  Books are being distrubted through kindle like wildfire, and even public libraries are utilizing this method.  Same with software.  Its all being digitally distributed and those storefronts are no longer keeping the overhead.  They figure that if someone wants a game they are probably on the web and will buy it there anyways.  Very few people are implusive buyers that shop for PC games.  I mean take a look at all your PC gaming friends, how many of them alone are impulsive buyers?  Probably none. (Just look at financial reports of digital versus store sales of companies such as Atari, which one is booming and one is dead)

As for the computer, people said this years ago.  Guess what?  They aren't going anywhere.  To much is stored on them and unless its stored on the internet you need a PC for massive storage alone.

  • GroovyFlowerGroovyFlower Member Posts: 1,245

PC is always the main gaming platform thats why all developers design them on PC its only becouse the MASS can't figure out PCs its to complicated for them thats why consoles are more popular. PC is gaming platform that will have superiro hardware allways over consoles and way more felible and freedom.

I realy dont think PC will dissapear as gaming platform still 350 billions $$$ earn with selling PCs globally every year. Consoles are just way to limited compare to PCs. But if time comes and PC lose ill quit gaming i grew up with PC and never realy got into consoles only for short while with Dreamcast but i even played that with keyboard and mouse lol.

ROFL death of the computer, hardly.   My oldest one has a tablet and all that cell phone stuff.  At the end of the day what does so do.  She sits down at her desktop to sync it all up.

The pc is not going anywhere,  and console gaming is ok, but for the most part the pc is still the king.
