To this day, I know people who still in the back of their minds believe this.

I remember when my Mom freaked out on me when I brought a DnD player guide home with me when I was 14. So I gave her the book and made her read it, stating "you show me the material that will make me a homocidal maniac and satan worshipper and I'll get rid of it". Needless to say, the book stayed and my Mom was a more informed person.

Are you really going to listen to Kathy Lee Gifford and a guy who's an infamous anti-gamer,  Deutsch?

So what else should I have on my mind? If its playing golf with Biff and co. not interested. What making moar money? Got a job for that. Maybe after all is said and done, wifes happy, kids are sleeping, if I wan't to play some video game I don't need some tan-salon junkie to tell me I'm weird. People who watch these shows looking for advice are weird.

Who cares, those two are some of the most overmedicated/drunken monstrosities on tv to date.  On the off chance that they do manage to formulate a coherent sentence somewhere within the hurricane of chicken clucks that is the Today Show, the only appropriate response would be mocking laughter.

I am consistently amazed that Frank hasn't killed himself yet, having a family with that thing must be tumor-inducing.

No matter who you are or what you do with your life or what you enjoy there is always someone out there snickering at you and saying what a weirdo you are.  So just be you and get on with things :)

Their loss for judging you on one aspect of who you are, imo.

Ah man, can you imagine an actual D&D murderer?

    Detective Smith?

    Yes Officer?

It's gruesome in there sir...the body is surrounded by bloody D20's.

    Dear god!

There's more...All of the D20's were facing 20 side up.  A critical hit.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

Be even funnier if there were an accomplice laying there dead or hurt too and a d20 next to him with the "1" side face up, doh!

"Interactive simulations where you have sex with hookers and then kill them is for children."

The media will always be full of idiots. Its a simple fact of life. When it comes to anything they don't know about, people always make assumptions. Just like most male gamers think female gamers are rare, when there are actually a ton.

For the years that I was married during my thirties my wife hated that I liked playing computer games. Never mind that I played less total time than she watched tv. It became pretty obvious that she didn't like it because I wasn't doing something "useful." She was only happy when I was dutifully working myself into an early grave so that she could spend... er... we could have nice things. Never mind that I made 4 time as much as she ever did. No, I ended up doing contract work in the evenings and on the weekends. When I picked up SWG a good 6 months after release she when ballistic.I probably got to play it a total of 30 hour or so total before giving up. It wouldn't be until another year later that I filed for divorce (which was about more than just games) and started spending my free time the way I felt like.

I get the impression from these harpies in the clip that they are just the same. They are just mad that some guys are spending their free time doing what they want to do rather than doing what a woman wants them to do. They are playing the shame game. and that guy is their duitiful beta yes boy, quick to agree so as to gain their approval and through that the approval of the women watching.

Well sorry, I don't do what I do to get the approval of a woman, least of all one of these aging harpies. I game when I want to game. I drink when I want to drink, I play golf (badly) when I want to play golf and I ride my motorcycle when I want to feel the wind on my face. And I have all the female approval I want when my daughters and granddaughters come to visit, who spend more time with me than they do with their natural mother.

Do what it is you want to do. Sports, cars, motorcycles, games, books, whatever. And love the women who love you regardless what you do.

    All die, so die well.

    Hahahaha.

On a sidenote, I think people who run sweatshops are weird.

    http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b38744_kathie_lees_latest_sweatshop_scandal.html

"The ex-workers related a story far removed from Kathie Lee's happy, made-for-TV life. They said fellow women in the factory were subjected to pregnancy tests, and worked 12-15 hour days in poorly ventilated buildings surrounded by barbed wire and armed guards. One union rep allegedly received death threats after complaining about workers' treatment."

Wow that just proves how far away from reality that mainstream media folks really are.   I I can do is shake my head, and go no wonder the US Economy is in such a mess.  These folks like in the tv industry gave us the political climate that we currently have.

I wouldn't take anything Kathy Lee Gifford says seriously.  She is a joke of a human being.  The Soup makes fun of her and Hoda Kopi all the time.  As for Donny Deutch, I remember seeing his show once when I lived in Boston.  It was some low budget talk show where the host (Donny) sounded like a Brooklyn construction worker trying to sound intelligent while interviewing people but failing big time.

If its your hobby and you like playing games who cares what others thinking, play games when your 80 as long your happy with this thats what counts not what two blond bimbo's on some show thinks and giggeling about it it or other people.

  • ColdmeatColdmeat Member UncommonPosts: 3,407

Screw it. I'm 38, and I play a crap load of games. I fully intend to die with a mouse, and keyboard, or a controller in my hand. If that makes me weird, then so be it. I'll wear my little weirdo badge with pride, and hopefully it will frighten those phony, over-tanned cows so much that they're unable to sleep at night.

And for the record, as a gamer I find it weird spending tens of thousands of dollars on plastic surgery, botox, and tanning beds. When you're in your fifties, there should be something more on your mind than trying to act like a tarted up twenty year old.

you keep ignoring this shit, than you allow it spread. That's why politics love messing with video games cause they know the media will put out this false stereotype that gamers are only kids, and the politics make changes that effect us all, but the gamers ignore it and do nothing

Here's a quote from Bertrand Russell that cuts the cr@p out:

To be able to fill leisure intelligently is the last product of civilization.

It could be argued one way or the other starting with the above quote but I think it can be reworded as engaged vs disengaged with life being the distinction and gamers can often be very engaged ppl as well as the stereotypical basement dweller much discussed. : )

It's amazing how many people forget this, despite it being said alot. The opinion of someone who you'll never meet, especially one who is ignorant and narrow-minded, is going to have no impact on your life and your happiness, so why worry? Our society is too caught up on what I call "Status Anxiety." It's also the name of an amazing documentary that's a brilliant reminder of what's important in life.

I, for one, will be a gamer for the rest of my life, despite some people complaining "games are for kids lolol yr a nerd cuz you don't like killing your IQ with "reality" t.v shows."

The Today Show is known for trolling and getting up the backs of its intended target(s), no need to feed the trolls.

  • tawesstawess Member EpicPosts: 4,227

well it is Kathy Lee Gifford after all.. jumping on the bandwagon so late most others are getting off. All for a cheap giggle and nod from people i gladly ignore. In all honesty i am glad i live in a contry were even the church have noted the positive effects of LARP and PnP RP as tools to develop peoples skills whrn it comes to working as a group and showing mutual respect. And while computer games at large still have some way to go it is very dificult to have anyone arguing with a straight face that it is a dangerous activity when we have yet to have any major act of violence (in my contry) connected to videogames but several connected to things like soccer (not to mention how parenst act towards the ref and personell at several junior league soccer matches latley)

Simply... It is the same old same old comming from people that you know don't know shit about the subject and all in all only make them sefl look rather stupid... .. . Since it gives good ratings.

This have been a good conversation
