To the OP, yeah i do keep getting disapointed by the PvP systems, most seem unbalanced and more so seem to have simplistic click systems, where PvP ends up in key spaming, no tatics, or numbers = win gameplay.
Out of all the games ive played to date only Guild Wars has provide a PvP system that really felt balanced, although i am looking forward to Dragons Nest, Im yet to be impressed by GW2's PvP system as we havent had much information released about it, but im under the presumption that it will be good, heh, i hope.
MMO PvP is unbalanced by design (to reward those that invest more money).
If player skill and not char progression (time) decided the battle outcome most PvP players would quit because of repeated failures. Make it so that a skilled level 1 can win against a normal level 50 player and the game will die in a month (especially if its full loot). From my experience most MMO pvp players simply do not want to fight on a fair battlefield. All they want is to feel powerful by ganking some poor fellow who at that time was on the phone anyway. And yes I have fought the battle on both sides.
If you want to play competetively against other players then do not play an MMO but games like CS, BF, TF2, SC2 etc. They are a lot more fun than MMOs and have the same ultimate "meaning" as well: none at all.
